Some Tips for Crucible Part of Thorn Bounty

Hey guys, I really appreciate all the help doing Crota and Vault of Glass in the past couple weeks. So I'm trying to pay it forward and give some tips for the Crucible Part of the Thorn Bounty. I'm guessing some/most of you either already did this or don't need any help, but maybe this will help someone. First off, I'm not an expert at Crucible, but I do play it a lot. I normally average a Kill/Death ratio in Control between 0.7 and 1.3 with some disasters (was 0.19 once) and some real successes (was 16 - 0 once). I am really good at capturing zones in control (I almost always lead my team) and get tons of assists (which usually means I almost but not quite kill an enemy). I am pretty bad at Rumble and semi-decent at the other types. The Crucible part of the Thorn bounty gives you +5 points for killing an enemy with Void damage, and -2 for dying. You need to get to 500 points. But you get no points for assists, capturing zones, etc. So you must focus only on a) killing enemies with void and b) not dying needlessly. The biggest obstacle for me was finding the right weapons with Void. I use hand cannons almost exclusively in PvP, which is why I really want Thorn. The only primary I have with any special damage is Atheon's Epilogue, which coincidentally does do Void. But it's not great in PvP, especially since mine wasn't upgraded all the way yet. Still, it's all I had. I went with Murmur or The Trolley Problem (both fusion with void) as my special and The Truth (Rocket launcher with Void) as my heavy. I used Defender sub-class on my Titan. I actually got fairly good with the fusion rifle by the end and got many of my kills that way. Some other guides online suggest using whatever primary you are most comfortable with because getting a kill with non-Void is useful if it means it saves you from dying. But I wanted every single kill to be Void damage. I know that in PvP I tend to get stuck using mainly my primary and forget about my other weapons (I often don't even go for heavy ammo because it's such a clusterf#$@ usually). That would not be good for this bounty. I've heard that Sunsinger (?) in Warlock makes this super easy, but I don't have a Warlock so I'm not sure. And I think the Hunter doesn't have a subclass that does Void, so that may be harder. The advantage of having most/all of your kills be with Void damage makes it pretty easy to know how you did after the battle is over. If every single kill you make is with Void, you need a 0.4 Kill/Death ratio to break even. Less than that and you are going backwards. So that's your minimum goal: be over 0.4. Because I was using weapons that I almost never use, I was rarely over 1.0 especially in the beginning. But I probably averaged 0.75 with say 12 kills and 16 deaths. That meant I was 28 points every time. Not a ton, but it was enough. Took me maybe 15-20 rounds to complete. Specific tips: 1) Play Control but don't bother capturing zones. Just watch for enemies near the zones. 2) Find good spots to hang out on each map (near zones but not too close), but don't stay in exactly one place. 3) Prioritize kills, not assists. Assists don't do anything (they should be +1 or +2, but alas). 4) Steal teammates' kills if need be. Watch for wounded enemies that you can quickly kill. 5) Don't be overly risky. Every time you manage to not die, it's like getting 3 points (sort of). 6) Run away if more than one enemy is facing you. You'll die before you get a kill. 7) If you are good with rockets or machine gun, go for the ammo. I like maps where you can hang out near the ammo. 8) If you have to die to kill a specific enemy, go for it. That's a good trade (+3). 9) Find Void weapons that suit your style. Snipe, shotgun, whatever it takes. 10 Don't panic if you sometimes go backwards in a round. 11) If a round starts off really badly for you, considering wiping. It's possible they are too good or are a great PvP clan. 12) If a round starts off great and you think it was mostly luck (say you have 8 kills to 3 deaths because of some lucky grenades), consider wiping. If the enemies seem weaker than you, stay in and rack up the points. But if it's luck, your +34 could evaporate quickly. 13) Keep an eye out for players who are lagged/glitched/away from their controller. These are easy kills, and you can sometimes go find them when they respawn for more easy kills. There is no honor in Crucible. 14) Don't get frustrated. Don't try to do it all at once. Take breaks. Most importantly: If you are really struggling, get a bunch of us from the Clan into a fireteam and we'll do a Rumble and let the bounty-seekers kill the rest of us. That would give you lots of kills with no deaths. Won't take long. NOTE: If anyone runs through the Crucible part and is then ready to take on Xyor (or anyone who doesn't need it and just wants to help), I could really use the help there. I've tried soloing 3 times with all sorts of synth ammo, but I just can't get it done. Thanks and hope this helps.

Thanks for the pointers, I will attempt it tonight. I'm loving the game but it's been a drag as I have struggled with this Bounty and still havent had a hand cannon drop (must be seriously unlucky) so keep getting whipped in pvp, although it is great fun. When I try with the void weapons I have I get a few points but lose them quick enough. I will let you know how it goes.

    • Great advice. I discovered most of what you put up there works. I'm not particularly good at PvP, but discovered that by playing conservatively, I was able to do it without wiping (a pet peeve of mine). By doing so, having no void primary, relying on my Frenzy (w/ unflinching, and stability perks to offset the impact buffs) and my void heavies, and even with the occasional setbacks, I was able to average 20-30 points a round and get the job done. You other scrub players can also make it work.
