Kickstarter allows devs to build the games they want without corporate nagging at them to make it different.
It also removes all accountability though. Take a look at Broken Age, for example: a budget of 3.3 million US dollars and he was right back begging for more after splitting it into two parts. Or look at the Tropes vs Women in gaming series. That was funded what, two or three years ago? She received a shitload of money for her series for everything that it would supposedly entail. The result was ripping other peoples' footage instead of actually playing the games herself, research that was faulty at best and outright disingenuous at worst, and a release schedule that would give Valve a run for the money. As much as publishers tend to overstep their bounds lately to the detriment of the developer, product, and consumer, we shouldn't forget that it's them who can actually light a fire under the ass of a developer so that the work gets done.

  • 3.3 million isn't much when it comes to developing a good game. Its simply a 'kick start' as the name implies, its not a 'here is your entire budget, give us a game'

A "good" game doesn't need a budget of tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. Plenty of indie devs have made great games on much more meager budgets. The story behind Broken Age is that Tim Shafer, though he may be creative genius, absolutely sucks at budgeting and finances and keeping promises. He also chose to locate his indie studio in San Francisco, which has a high cost of living. Even Bobby Kotick called him out on never making deadlines and going over budget all the time when Brutal Legend was being made.

  • what? kodick is Activision, and BL was an EA game. i wish BL had a sequel with a longer story, because it'd be awesome.

  • Initially, Activision was to publish Brutal Legend. The rights were sold off to EA.

Devs, lately, are rushed by publishers. Games come out half-baked because of this. I rather a game take a long time to come out and be as good as Broken Age than a game that is rushed out and is broken day one like Assassin's Creed Unity, DriveClub, The Master Chief Collection, and is lackluster like Destiny was at launch.
