What does KD mean...

So I see lots of posts about KD ... I know what it stands for Kill Death Ratio. But what does KD mean in relation to a players ability. I have friends who always want me on their team for IB and now for ToO but my KD sucks. Look if you don't believe. So I'm curious. I know why my friends always want me, even when they have a choice of players with better KD .. From my KD what kind of player do you think I am ? Also what does KD mean to you when you think of a players ability to help the team win.

K/D implies how much you help or hurt you team. Super high can mean nothing more than you camping/never engaging. Or it can mean you have great awareness and game knowledge with the mechanics to use that knowledge. Super low might mean that you are extremely agressive, or don't know your limits, have bad mechanics/game knowledge, or just play extremely objective focused (can be a good or bad thing). It's not the end all decider of skill, but it does imply what your playstyle/skill might be. My favorite player on my fireteam has a pretty bad K/D but he is extremely aware of the map, super usages on the enemy team, estimated up time for repeat supers and spawn knowledge. His mechanics for game play are awful but his knowledge helps me, and my team succeed. Soooooo basically it's helpful, but not the only thing that matters

      • It's your kills divided by your deaths. For example 24 kills and 3 deaths your KD would be 8.

        • KD is not a direct correlation to skill. I have above a 3.0 overall, but I can easily beat those with higher KD's it's all about what you have to offer for your team. I'm main slayer, for example so I don't worry about surviving, just keeping the other team within controlled spawns.

          • Kd in other games is usually the measure of how good you are, seeing as how we are playing a game about killing people, that is all that matters, like lap times in a racing game. However in destiny, there are so many ways to kill people without skill, that a high kd is only indicative of having host connection, playing with the most op loadouts, playing only op playstyles, playing with a team to back you up, and only ever playing against bad players and quitting when you get in matches of good players. I guarantee you that there are no playera with a 3.0 kd who play alone, off host, with a non op loadout/playstyle. In other games pure gunskill, reaction time, map awareness, etc can get you a high kd regardless of other things, but it cant outweigh the grenade spam, .5 ttk weapons, super spam, and heavies that will kill you a shitload of times per game. Not to mention how almost every map focuses on CQC and then hands players shotguns that can 1shot without aiming from about 70% away from the average engagement distance.

          • K/D is kill death ratio, but you already knew that. Honestly, I don't think it says anything about the skill of a player. Everyone has bad games occasionally and that will drop a K/D. Some people (like me) tend to screw around in the crucible with weapons that are difficult to use (Khvostov and No Land Beyond) which can also lower a K/D. What I'm trying to say is that K/D doesn't mean shit.

KD ratio is irrelevant. KD spread x average score is the best.

Yeah KD is irrelevant, I don't remember which game didn't show you your KD (I thinks it was uncharted or TLOU) but instead showed you Win/lose ratio which imo sounds more important

            • It means very little....to skilled players What it can mean is (if high >1KDR) 1) You are a KDR whore who focuses on boosting to look good (camp sniping away from objectives, abusing techniques to pad KDR) 2) You are skilled team player with real ability As this is a PUBLIC match made game, KDR is even less relevant to ability, I know guys with 1 KDR who wipe the floor with 2KDR+ players The only thing you should be looking for is players willing to work as part of a team for the team win and not boost their own stats. I've seen guys with 3-4 KDR and 100-120 CR, who clearly play to pad their own stats, then make out they are beast players....a simple rule I have for skill is look at the ratio of medal score to games played the higher the score the better I'd argue the player...

              • No it doesn't suck! So says me, King of PvP sucking on the grand scale!. It's between 0.71 and 0.97 so your only a fraction away from being decent at the upper score. Keep at it!

                • KD: something to brag about, something to throw in others faces, also an idea of skill..unless you are a lame ass who constantly remakes a char for better stats. Over all...if someone brings up KD in a negative way than they are BHOLES!

                • Maybe they just like you better. I completely suck in PvP. But I already have a group for ToO. The others in the group are way better than I am, but they want me on their team, because we have fun together. Sometimes people with high K/Ds take things too seriously and get pissy when things don't go their way. If you're more laid-back, that's probably why your friends want to play with you.

                  • Kill to death ratio. KD has some influence from skill, but a lot of players will sacrifice their KD to win a match. Not saying I'm good. I actually kinda suck at PVP.

                    • I'd rather play with a friend and have fun than someone with a great KD but is a pvp ass who screams down the mic. If they are great players and are mates then that's even better though!

k/d is a complicated thing. For me personally it doesn't reflect my PvP skill. Because I never played online PvP games, I had to learn it from scratch. At first I was terrible always going negative. These days I've been playing alot better, I hardly go negative anymore.

                          • I would think most players prefer their teammates getting kills more than simply "slowing the enemy down," especially when it's 3v3 elimination. What could possibly be more valuable than winning a one-on-one gun battle at the start of a round and putting your team up a man, 3v2? Sure there are other ways to contribute in different scenarios. You could capture/defend Control points like a boss or camp the enemy Heavy spawn. But more often than not it's the kills that slow down the enemy the most. Those other tactics are devastating when paired with the ability to score kills. What good are you "distracting the enemy," dying, staring a respawn screen for a few seconds, and then running back to the battle from the edge of the map only to repeat the process and give the enemy team more points?

                            • Person whose KD ratio is under 1.0 has mostly negative impact on teams success. You give more score than you get.
