Black Hammer the most overrated weapon ever?
So I'm not some noob who just got one before you ask, I've had one maxed for months and got a second that I'm close to maxing but the more I use it the more I'm like "why am I using this again?" There's 3 places it really shines devil walker, sepiks, Goliath tank. Otherwise you gotta be a great sniper to use against mobs and get the 3 Crits and sometimes even that doesn't work cuz someone takes your kill or enemies have shields so the crit doesn't register. Honestly I realized after all this time that the LDR on my Hunter is far superior. High fire rate, good stability, super fast reload with outlaw, big mag size, a lot of ammo. Etc. black hammer honestly pales in comparison to most snipers with a good perk roll even if you're a headshot master.
Ps if you're not using all ghorns on Atheon I guess black hammer. But I personally just melt him in a second with a team of 4-5 ghorns

Because the White-Nail perk is it's greatest feature. Of course there are better, more optimal choices for dynamic situations but against bosses with huge weak-spots it has no comparison.

Personally, the way I saw it is if your accurate with your shots Black Hammer excels at PvE. Archon Priest and Phogoth are just a stagger-fest with it. BTW nice LDR

If you are a sure shot... then that gun is a beast. Melted the Nexus last night... oh it was beautiful! Its not for everyone, but I personally love it. However, its not my GO TO sniper, that award goes to my ARC LDR.

Honestly I don't know that it's even possible to overrate black hammer, because if you play your cards right and you're a very skilled sniper, then you literally have a sniper with high impact, low recoil (perfect balance), unlimited ammo, and no ammo regen or reload time. That cannot be beat by any sniper in the game. Obviously that's not realistic though. But you can still get damn close! What I like to do is use it in 3 shot bursts. It's pretty easy to hit 3 straight precisions if that's all you're trying to do. If you take 3 shots here, 3 shots there, and not worry about putting together the longest chain possible, you can still have nearly unlimited ammo. Since I've gotten used to black hammer, I never run out of sniper ammo anymore. The fact that it has a 3 round magazine is what keeps that gun balanced and not OP, and it's also my favorite part about it. It [b]forces[/b] you to be an accurate and disciplined sniper. Like you said, it only has a 3 round clip. So if you're not absolutely perfect, the weapon suddenly becomes pretty useless. I have a couple longbows that I [b]love[/b] with surplus, field scout, and clown cartridge. Often I load 8 round clips. As much as I love them though, they've caused me to become lazy with my sniping. I won't go for precisions often because I know I have tons of ammo. Black hammer has set me straight again and now I'm really reaping the benefits. The only downfall to black hammer is that you can't hit precisions on shields. But if you use communication with your team, it doesn't matter. I have a friend who I 2-man crota with, and he used ice breaker to take out shields, and then I land straight precisions while he regens. The loads of hallowed knights during deathsinger are a breeze. Sword bearers too. Not to mention what you can do to Atheon with a good team of 6 black hammers.

It's situational, just like every other weapon. Its top for boss encounters, but I wouldn't use it for much else, other than the death singer clean up.

Also good against phogoth, valus, the archon priest, and is always good for a quick sword bearer kill, atheon, gate keepers, templar. Its a boss killer. Other snipers may be good for ads but the black hammer is in disposible for bosses

6 RepliesIts good against enemies with a huge crit spot... in general play i find Efrideets Spear with Field Scout and a good set of perks a much more all round weapon. Does just as much damage, 6 round clip and can re-roll for your perk preferences.

Yes most overrated. I will only use it on solar nightfalls now that I got my Efrideets Spear that hits as hard or harder and holds 6 with alot better perks

Edited by BLuRR 203: 5/15/2015 1:34:29 PMIt is SOOOO definitely overrated. It has ONE SINGLE instance that I ever even get it out of my vault, and thats Hard Mode Vault of Glass, Atheon Battle. Thats IT! I'll admit I have two of them maxed out to always have it for my VoG runs, but every other sniper I have that is "Endgame" material is used because it far outperforms Blackhammer. My BEST endgame snipers are my trio of LDR 5001's in all 3 damage types with field scout and final round, and I have 2 Efrideet's Spears (void and arc) with field scout. All 5 of those snipers destroy blackhammer in any situation EXCEPT at atheon, and maybe a few strikes, but strike bosses don't sit still very often enough to make it worthwhile.

Black hammer is only good due to White Nail, refilling the mag after 3 crit shots is amazing, and most bosses have relatively large crit spots so, go figure, endless shots

A team of black hammers with a titan bubble will take Atheon down in seconds. Personally I prefer it over ghorn. However, I will add that using ghorn is easier and given the average level of player competency I would recommend that most teams use it.

Amazing against any type of boss or mini boss really, nearly unlimited ammo without having to wait for regen like on Icebreaker. Best all around sniper? Naa.. it's situational. Far from overrated though.

17 RepliesI have IB on each character & havent used it since i got efrideets spear. I only have 1 spear & i prefer to simply switch it between characters, it kicks IB,s ass. Ive seen ppl with the hammer & tbh id rather have my spear. Imo the spear is best sniper in the game.

Why didn't you just write " I'm a noob with the blackhammer and be done with it. If your not good enough to get the precision shots then use something else. No drama.

That's a nice roll on your ldr, but black hammer is still a better sniper that puts out more damage faster (if you can get precision hits). And I think people are pretty well aware of its situational applications. Not sure how it's overrated.
