Hey folks, I've used vortex grenades for quite a while but have started experimenting with axion bolt. When they work they're great, but I seem to have very sporadic success with them. What I often see is that I throw them and they simply do nothing at all, no seekers or anything.
So from experienced users of these, what's the best way to throw these? Right at the target? Just next to them? Quite a ways away? My goal is to reliably get the grenade to spawn seekers and not turn into a dud.

5 RepliesWhilst I wouldn't claim to be an immense voidwalker, I've played it quite a bit in pvp. Axiom bolt has a couple of functions: Flushing people out of cover - it's a big one and probably it's most effective use, it makes people move so if someone has a choke point covered or has jumped behind something to regen, bomb one over. He'll either die cos he's weak, he'll run away, or he'll run to you where you're waiting. Throwing it into groups - this sometimes bags a few kills. Axiom bolt has a mini blast radius so if 2 bolts hit two players close enough to each other it can one shot both. I use bloom for this reason. If you throw it and die, it wont spawn the bolts, it will just do 122 damage in a small radius. Sometimes it doesn't spawn bolts anyway but that doesn't happen that often. Also fyi, unlike firebolt and arcbolt, axiom bolt goes round corners. If someone is on the otherside of a wall and you throw it against a wall, they will try and seek the player. It's very good against campers.

Thanks everyone for the good information and advice. I have all kinds of new things to try out this weekend!

Throw it as close as you can, the seekers only activate if an enemy is within a certain radius of the grenade. Plus it takes less time to get to the enemy

Axiom bolt + bad juju or invective = guardian down

Nah man, firebolt 4 dayz

5 RepliesAxion bolt is extremely glitchy. You can't predict when it will or won't spawn seekers. . .At least I haven't figured it out. But that 80% of the time that it actually works, it's great. I always throw it into a room where players are before I go in.

Have the right skill tree setup and the right gear you can throw an axion bolt ever 10 seconds. I usually just use my tlw to pop a few shots in and if they get away let my bolt do the rest of the work. I find them almost as efficient as lightning grenades given the situation.

If they are running at you or standing still drop it at their feet. If they are running away or moving/sprinting throw it where they are running towards.

1 ReplyIf you get into a firefight and you have your axion bolt ready, you have to use it early if it's to have any success. If you throw your grenade and die before it forms into a seeker, the grenade will simply explode and not do much damage, so make sure you use it early.

I rock my lucky raspberry and use my grenade as often as possible. Don't throw it at them, because if it actually hits the target, it does a pre determined amount of damage, won't kill them unless their shield is gone, and it won't hit more targets. Throw it at the ground around them, pelt them with the thorn once, and boom, you got your first blood.

Throw it close to them but behind them...this will cause them either to take cover and have no choice but to take the damage or have them run away right into your gunfire

2 RepliesWhen you throw the grenade, you will see a purple ring radiates out. That is zone of where bolts will spawn. If no enemy is detected within the circle, no bolts will spawn. As for the seeker themself, I have mixed feelings about them. Unless the grenade detonates right beside the target, it is possible to outrun the bolts, especially if you have blink. I outrun axions on multiple occasions. They need a speed buff imo.

5 RepliesEdited by puppyk1sses: 5/14/2015 7:53:13 AMThrow them around corners. They will take your enemy down to half, and you make quick work of them with your gun. Also throw them towards control zones, especially in the middle of a firefight when their health is already low and you'll get multi-kills with them. They are a "fire-and-forget" grenade. Most of the time not going to kill anyone by themselves, but they will kill multiple weakened targets, or weaken up multiple targets for you to finish off.

Use them as a buff against your enemy. Throw them ahead of yourself just before you are acquiring your target. Their energy goes down to half so most likely you will win a head to head fight against any thorn user.

Watch True Vanguard on YouTube, he does pretty well with his axion bolts

1 ReplyI was in a match on Blind Watch where I was on the ledge thing by zone B facing the door nearest the flag. I landed a headshot on a guy with Thorn and threw my axion only to have it follow him as far as the doorway then proceed to turn right and follow up into the wall and ceiling as I'm sure he jumped up onto the next platform on the other side of the wall lol. My experience with them has been "hit and miss" as well...literally. More often than not though, they do a pretty good job of killing after you've landed a shot. Which I can't for the life of me figure out how people can't outrun them lol.

2 RepliesEdited by Turtle: 5/13/2015 10:25:53 PMYou misspelled Liam Neeson as "Axion Bolt" . He will find you. He will kill you.

1 ReplyThe philosophy is different. You use vortex grenades to DENY space. To keep someone from going one place so you can force them to go where you want. You use axion (and fire-) blot grenades to CLEAR OUT space. Or finish off wounded opponents trying to hide behind cover. Throw them into areas where you can't see to soften up campers. Throw them in situations where your outnumbered. There more like how a real soldier would use a grenade.

All very good info, thank you folks. Obviously the Voidfang Vestments are almost a requirement if you want to get the most out of an Axion build. Sounds like you want to not hit the person directly, but probably within 1-2 body lengths of them in order to get the bolts to spawn. It will take some getting used to, my muscle memory says throw right at people.

Edited by aem: 5/14/2015 12:23:10 AMAxion bolt is very multi functional. Like Nikon said you want to throw it at them close so they actually get hit. Too far and it becomes an area of denial. Fire some dmg at them and throw it close and it's a certain kill. Close range and don't know where they actually are? Throw it and let them seek for you, follow up with a melee or shotgun. If they're packed together and hidden and your allies already have dealt dmg at them, axion is a great follow up.

3 RepliesWith axion bolt you want to land the grenade close to them. If it doesn't land closes enough to an enemy you get a "dud" where no seekers spawn.
-
2 RepliesDon't throw them right at the targets because they will instantly explode and not do as much damage. Same goes for firebolt and arcbolt. It's even more frustrating with firebolt because when you run a burn build it doesn't actually burn them when it explodes on them. Best way to use them is throw them next to the target. The best is when you know someone is around a corner and you can throw it just past the corner.
-
I like hitting walls so they don't really have the opportunity to jump away from the projectiles. Always throw first or damage and then throw. They can outrun them too so it's great for control to make enemies scatter.
-
if they are too far way the seekers wont spawn if you directly hit them you can have issues too, They are great for just getting people to move out from cover if they are hiding behind a crate throw it to there corner of the crate
