Can the vex really time travel?

If they are as smart as we think they are and if they can go back in time then couldn't they rewrite events in time and stop themselves from losing any battle? Just a simple question, considering how these guys are one of the main parts of the story line I thought we would learn a bit more about them. Sadly these questions were never actually answered.... Edit 1: Wow, lots of info and help! Thanks guys this is pretty interesting! Edit 2: I think at one point in the grimore it is explained that the traveler created the vex to help with terraforming planets, but they were later taken by the darkness and changed. That is still a bit unclear though, and again thanks for all the replies :)

  • Of course, that minotaur in the portal travels back to a time where he had full life...repeatedly.

The main clear cut reason.... is the stranger.... She has access to a vex time gate and now that she is able to move around time freely and change things, the vex have lost total control over time. (because they can no longer control her) and now that there is that one loose thread in time (the stranger): Whatever the stranger does cant be fixed. SO because she chose to use her time-traveling ability to meet with us/interest with us, we ourselves are no longer under the vex's control of time. The grimoire also says that warminds (rasputin) are also outside the control of the vex's time spell because they are too unpredictable.

    • Vex move toward an ultimate goal. If this goal can be made faster and more efficiently by losing some battles then they will do it.

    • Wow...no one brought up the title of the game. Btw I absolutely love and hate the fact that most of the lore is stored in the grimoire cards. So here goes...the Vex does have the ability to travel between time, but the traveller with the help of Rasputin has a trump card. Everytime the Vex or the Darkness takes over, Rasputin activates the end and the beginning. Basically a reset button. This takes a ton of energy so perhaps the traveller at the beginning of the new time, travels around the universe and eats stars to gather more energy before travelling back to earth/mars. Every timeline there's a "chosen" guardian that's suppose to save the traveller and the world but perhaps in the previous timelines, the guardian failed. Eventually the traveller created the stranger who can also travel through time and she "guides" you as the "one" to fulfill your destiny of saving the world. Maybe this time around, you're successful, maybe not. Keep killing stuff and find out.

        • Technically no. It appears so because the vex consciousness runs endless simulations providing knowledge of all possible situations and outcomes. This allows them to respond almost instantaneously to our actions. They also proliferate the time line, existing at all points, from the beginning till the end. Atheons intention was to make the vex a universal constant, interwoven with space/time.

Going a little bit off topic but I feel that the four races (Hive,Fallen, Vex, and Cabal) each represent one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. The Hive are Pestilence because of there nature, The Cabal are obviously War, the fallen are Famine because they are pirates and scavengers and the Vex ultimately represent Death. This leads to your questions with the Vex being the embodiment of the cold, unforgiving, relentless and eternal nature of Death. Death is timeless or to put another way can control time because they have an infinite amount of it because they are machines. And with this unlimited amount of time they would be able to discover a way to move back an fourth through time. But they still cant escape the fact that death is inevitable. This is why they are seeking to become something more. They want to become a fundamental force or god to transcend death it self. This is all speculation but I feel that destiny is following the same judao / Christian, religious mythos that is in many religious texts.

I've got a kind of out there theory... I'm sure people can shoot it down and for some reason I can't find enough story in the game to clarify, but... My little theory is that the traveler isn't really benevolent or evil, and its presence causes a... warp in time. Basically, the golden age was the beginning of this distortion... planets seemingly terraforming were actually just those planets habitable time frame being pulled into the warp... the technological advancements were advancements that humanity would have made in their own future. The hive, the vex, the cabal and the fallen were all inhabitants of our solar system at different points in time, all brought into the warp the traveler created. My theory has holes and things I can't place yet, the darkness being one of them... unless the darkness is that inevitable point in time when life ceases completely? But that's very... vague? Anyway, yes the Vex seem to have done a little time traveling, and in my opinion humanity and all of the other creatures in the game have as well.

              • What if we create them in the future and they technically need us so they come back to help save us but are warped in the process and then think everything is a enemy of the vex

                  • I mean technically, time itself really hasn't been established other than actual game mechanics. Personally, I think this relates the whole vex simulation theory. If the Destiny universe is a simulation, then it may not necessarily be time traveling so much as loading save-states/checkpoints when changes occur like a backup on a computer.

                  • Let me try to explain, Vex are fighting the fallen Vex go back in time to stop fallen from existing. End of fight. Right? Wrong. Let boldes show the fighting vex timeline and underlined the past. Vex are fighting the fallen Vex, after losing the fight, go back in time to stop fallen from existing Vex are in the past Vex kill the squad a month before the fight Now, the moment they kill the fallen squad, they cease to exist. They cease to exist because the vex no longer fight the fallen squad, and it was the vex who had to lose to travel back in time. If they never "went back in time", then they cease to exist. hence erasing themselves.

                    • You should look up Sir Wallen's video on this. He references a grimoire card that explains that the Vex seem to view time as a resource; and it takes to much resources to go back in time with an army and wipe out the traveler. So the vex can time travel; it's just too costly to do so on a very large scale.

They essentially turn planets into machines where they can control what we know as reality in some large goal to make them selfs a law of physics.... They cannot control time outside of their machines.
Yet...
• just because someone is able to see into the future dosent mean they can make changes to it. from what i can remember Atheon has the ability to see the future and he saw the darkness comming and locked himself in the Vault of Glass. All Vex are connected to the same system and share 1 mind except for atheon who is not part of the system or his crew (vex inside the vault of glass).

                    • I think the vex are beings who discovered the black gardens heart, and decided to worship it(Because they could tell it was powerful and it was the only unidentifiable Thing they ever saw.) as stated in the grimore. Then, the darkness gave then amazing knowledge, and the curse of wanting more, wanting All of it. With this advanced time travel ability, they seeded themselves in every planet, then in every place in all of time, and now they are simply trying to use this influence to become all powerful, to become the darkness or even greater. They've been attracted to earth because of our golden age but operate on Venus. From there they plan to capture the entire system, as to get every last golden age relic and expand their knowledge. They have started with mars.

                    • Time travel adds the possibility of paradox. To sidestep it, you can think of the multiverse concept. The Vex aren't traveling in time, they're moving to different realities. Could the Vex move to a time stream where they wiped humanity out - sure. We'd be removed from that multiverse - so would never encounter them. It is possible that by doing so, they set off consequences that are worse for them.

                    • The best explanation I've heard is resources. Simply put it they don't have the resources to travel back in time to destroy us when we're primitive. They have the technology, but not the fuel. Another theory, which is based on the almost disturbingly natural fit of the Armor forged from the materials found in the vault of glass, is that the vex hail from humans. If that is the case, they can't destroy us without the risk of destroying themselves.
