In the Halo games, you could get two shotted in the head by the pistol and die. The biggest difference is everyone had the option to equip it ;) Bungie has always had a love affair with powerful pistols in their games.

In more recent Halos it take a bit more work to kill someone with a pistol of any sort. The only time pistols were king was the first Halo. Now Halo is a bit more balanced.

Actually the magnum was a three shot kill with headshots in halo combat evolved. This was only because Jason Jones admitted to buffing the magnum in the last minute to get an upper hand against friends.
