Long story short, the darkness corrupted dredgen yor and the rose, turning it into what we now know as the thorn. Whether the two were friends before or not isn't confirmed but it seems ward let his guard down around yor and yor killed him. Ward was the wielder of the last word and the mentor of another hunter named shin malphur, after wards assassination, malphur tracked down yor and the two hunters faced off with malphur being the victor and avenging his mentor ward as well as inheriting the last word.
