The only thing that I am truly sick of in PvP matches is spawning in to matches where the team I am dropped into has no chance of winning, because by the time I get there the match is a foregone conclusion. If I had a nickel for every time I entered a match with 2 minutes to play and a 5000+ point deficit; well, I would have a lot of nickels. Lost my metaphor there.
There are 3 ways to stop punishing players for entering PvP, as far as I can see.
1) A mercy rule that prevents matchmaking from adding players to the match after a certain point. I suggest when there are less than 3 minutes on the timer or when the winning side is more than 5000 points ahead.
2) Stop matchmaking from adding players to an ongoing match, period. It punishes the side that loses a player to disconnection errors, but, well, life is tough.
3) My favorite- DISABLE THE OPTION TO GO TO ORBIT DURING AN ACTIVE MATCH. Don't let players quit just because they are losing and want to "preserve their K/D ratio," which is BS anyway. If all you care about is your K/D, go play Rumble, where you don't have a team depending on you participating. Or quit just because they are losing the 3rd or 4th match in a row. So what? It will be over soon. Hang around until the reward screen, you might get that Gjallarhorn you've been crying for.
QUITTERS NEVER WIN. Quit quitting. Bungie, please stop enabling the quitters.
EDIT: My new favorite (based on a reply to this post): Quitting a match gives a limited time debuff which locks you out of ALL crucible modes for the duration. Also, add a "quit" statistic to your K/D and Win/Lose record.

I think people who quit PvP matches should get a 1 hour debuff that doesn't allow them to enter any mode of crucible and a new statistic of abandons should be kept track of.
