Duhh, the benefits of religion include emotional relief over guilt/fear/responsibility. People in prison probably need it to keep from crippling depression, man. Prison is a horrific, and grossly ineffective institute, anyway. Don't down on people for being there.

  • I don't think you understood the point of the post. No where is it saying anything bad about prisoners.

  • You implied prisoners lack morals. Morals are ideals of circumstance, and many people don't have the luxury of adhering to them at all times.

  • I understand that but i am not implying that, that is something society already thinks (not that it is correct) I agree with you depending on the environment you live in you don't have certain luxuries because in less fortunate areas you have to survive depending how bad it is. But for the stereotype i was trying to counter argue there was no nicer way to put it. Also, obviously for all cases not everyone lacks morals but were you implying all crimes were justified?

Most crimes are justified, yeah. Spare the rare affluent violent serial killer/rapist. Nothing more than a byproduct of inequality and a system that manages resource in the least efficient way possible. Religion serves two separate functions, both as socialization and emotional comfort. Naturally those who later adopt religion do it to find solace, so socialization and development of certain values/morals for adults isn't quite something that is related. This doesn't mean those raised in a wholly theistic setting are lacking the same morality/values as the cultural ideal expresses. This would, perhaps, validate that your initial post is nothing more than fallacy. If you were to instead examine a sample of those raised on religious morality from a young age, you'd be making a better argument.
