Did Halo come from Starship Troopers?

First thing first, if you haven’t seen Starship Troopers then you probably shouldn’t start ranting in here. Starship Troopers came out on November 7, 1997 and Halo Combat Evolved (Halo 1) came out on November 15, 2003. Those are facts by the way. Weird how they both were released in the same month, but have an 8 day, 6 year difference. So for those of you who have seen this old movie and possibly the cartoon show series that were aired on fox in the morning, you could see some resemblance to Halo. The armor that is used and the assault rifle looks so much like the BR. BR came out in Halo 2, I know. But what I’m trying to say is that everything from Halo seems to be from the movie. The ships in the movie also look like the one in Halo. Model wise, the Pelican and the drop ships used in the movie look different but the same internal structures exist. How you place you weapon in lock next to you. How you sit in the drop ship and it harness you in while the descent from the mother ship to the entry zone is. There is a certain bug that shots a blue plasma ball, same thing the Covenant use. There are also humans fighting against aliens. This is the only big difference between the two. The movie has bugs, Halo has the Covenant. So there is no Master Chief In the movie. But there was an infantry man that had a mechanical arm. Maybe that gave Bungie to make the Master Chief in a suit. Now this is just a theory, so all you fan boys out there, I don’t want to see my theory turn into a thread of revulsion.

 • Anyone who has ever read Starship Troopers will be hilariously amused by that article - the similarities are incredible. For instance, the Jenkins (marine whose helmet camera you see the recording of in 343 Guilty Spark) picture is an homage to Jenkins from Starship Troopers (this is pre-Leeroy Jenkins). The thing about female pilots is taken straight from Starship Troopers, as are the lack of female marines (something the film did wrong). Similarities between the bugs in ST and Halo's Flood... So, yeah, Aliens borrows nicely from Starship Troopers, and Halo even makes references to it as well, even separate from the Aliens impacts. But then, how could it not?

 •
Posted by: spartan 112 Halo was in fact based off of the film Aliens- Ascendant Justice made a very good read about it.
In that very read, it is stated that Aliens adapted from the book, starship troopers, so technically yes, halo did come from starship troopers.
For example, Dan O’Bannon, a screenwriter for Alien said, “I didn’t steal Alien from anybody. I stole it from everybody!” [ix] Cameron himself was influenced by the novel Starship Troopers and went as far as to ask the Colonial Marine cast to read it before filming.
I have yet to see starship Trooper 3.
One was amazing. An hour and a half of killing and guts shooting everywhere. Two was terrible, it was isolated, too cheesy. It was ruined. Three I heard was also terrible.[/b[
Yes, yes it was. A God bug? No, just no. And Mechs, oh the Mechs!!!

It influenced almost all military fiction since then, is on the US military reading list (The only fiction book) and generally influenced all manner of technology. Really, how have so few people here read it? It's culture, dammit, culture!
interesting, i was just reading the wiki on the book. to be honest i have never even heard of the novel, or that the movie was even based on a novel untill just now... i just thought it was another "eh" sci-fi movie.

 • ... Halo has more in common with aliens, which, yes, came from the book of Starship Troopers. You DID know it was a book, right? Before it was a movie?

 • Read the back of a really old Indianna Jones movie. I don't remember the name, something to do with an Ark. Read the back, it sounds almost exactly like Halo.

 • Halo came from the movie "Aliens". The parallels are numerous. 1) The motion tracker comes right from the movie 2) The general shape of the elites is similar to the Aliens 3) The honor guard armor is based on the queen alien in Aliens 4) The Pelican is based on the marines drop ship in Aliens 5) Sgt Johnson is based on the black marine Sgt in Aliens 6) Some dialogue in Halo:CE is taken DIRECTLY from the movie 7) Same exect camera angles in the entry sequence of Halo:CE on the 2nd level can be found in a similar scene on Aliens. 8) The assault rifle in Halo looks just like the one in Aliens. 9) The concept of the flood as a parasite comes from Aliens. The little floodlets move in similar ways to the alien parasites. Crawl around and then jump to attack! There are SO many more that I can't remember. Just watch "Aliens" and prepare to be amazed. FYI, "Aliens" is the second movie in the series. The first is "Alien" which doesn't appear to have as many parallels.

 • Oh, I have no doubt Halo was influenced by Starship Troopers - but the book, and not the film. Starship Troopers is one of the landmarks of Sci-fi, as the military ideas in the book were implemented into the US military, and it is why we focus on mobile military in small squads (and even why we're pouring so much money into exoskeleton development). I'd probably say Iain M Banks Orbitals influenced it more heavily than Ringworld - the Orbitals are far closer in size, and even discussed placing them at the Lagrange points, rather than being large enough to orbit a sun in a circle. Oh, and you have to remember that Aliens (the 2nd film, the first doesn't have quite so many influences as it's not so military focussed) is certainly influenced by Starship Troopers (going so far as to quote parts of it). The first is definitely an inspiration to Halo in many ways, but after the first 2, the influence stops being there. (except, perhaps, the reference to the Xenomorph adopting characteristics of the host, which lived on in the Flood) Ender's Game is influenced by it quite heavily, too. So, it'd be quite easy to state that Halo's major influences are Starship Troopers and Larry Niven's Ringworld, with further influences coming from novels that were influenced by the two.

 • Halo is most commonly identified as being inspired by the novels Starship Troopers and Ring World. It was probably inspired by some space zombie movie also.

 •
Posted by: flamedude Halo was based on a bunch of sci-fictions. Starship Troopers can be seen in Halo but its quite a small influence compared to the other contributors; Enders Game, Ringworld, Alien, Predator, The Bible (heh).
I don't think you should under play the religious undertones through out the Halo series. The story plays heavily into how a blind, unquestioning religious hierarchy can be mislead and manipulated for the benefit of the few in control.
