Explain why Halo 4's MP was so bad.

Actual points please, hard reasons why it was so terrible that you still bash it. "Because it was shit" type answers will be ignored. I've played and loved all the Halos, I just want to know what everyone's big deal was with it. Edit: It sounds like many of you have singled out the sprint as the major target of your ire. It may be a crutch for the weak, but it's twice as useful to a skilled player. Can you honestly say (considering yourself a skilled player) that you don't use it? Of course you do, don't be a hypocrite. Edit: I'd like to remind anyone who brings up Reach's MP being better that when reach was released all I ever heard anyone bitch about was abilities and Armor Lock. I realize that sprint wasn't a default ability in Reach, but even the mighty Bungie still resorted to implementing the skill in some way in their last kick at the Halo can.

  • -Extreme lack of gametype and Forge features. I don’t know how 343 did it, but they made custom games regress back a few years. Some modes, like Flood, were so bad that you could literally do nothing to it except change the human starting weapons. Forge was also severely gutted, albeit not as much. In place of precision editing and monitor zoom, we got magnets, which would have been a lot better if they actually aligned with coordinates. The dynamic lighting was nothing but a nuisance. Plus, 343 had to pump out a new canvas map four months after release just to appease the forgers who were pissed about the launch “forge” maps. -File share and theater mode. These two were so poorly executed that it’s not even funny. Theater mode was incompatible with an entire game mode (campaign) and still lacked party viewing. File share didn’t even exist for three months after release, and even when 343 put it in Halo 4, it was absolutely littered with problems. -The inability to disable sprint. With Reach, you could at least turn off sprint like the other armor abilities. However, in Halo 4, it was permanently turned on. In turn, 343 felt the need to really inflate all the maps in a Halo for the first time (Reach’s maps, while pulled straight out of campaign, were still somewhat similar in size to older maps). Even with a switch to disable sprint, the maps were already inflated relative to, say, CE’s maps, and would have been very difficult to play balanced, sprint-less gametypes on. -Loadouts. Reach was much more predictable than Halo because loadouts usually only differed in the armor abilities, but Halo 4 just went off the deep end with loadouts. Almost every single playlist in matchmaking was loadout-based because 343 decided to piss all over the idea of equal starts. Players could even pick two damn perks each match. Most of the perks were even identical to COD’s perks (Dead Silence, Danger Close, Marathon, Bandolier, etc.). But the worst part of loadouts was easily its progressive unlock system. If 343 really wanted loadouts, they should have given everyone everything when they bought the game (I applaud them for doing this in the MCC, though). -Ordnance. Initial ordnance wasn’t so bad; personal and random ordnance are where the complaints are, though. How could anyone at 343 have thought that having a random weapon spawn at a random time was a good idea? ROD had the power to steal a win from a team by spawning a rocket or binary rifle at the losing team’s spawn. POD was just as bad, if not worse. 343’s idea of trying to level the playing field backfired on them, as the better players would get more kills and thus more ordnance. But you didn’t even need to get kills to get ordnance. Why should you ever be rewarded for not doing anything? -AA’s. Don’t even get me started on that bull -Yoink-. -Controversial and game-changing mechanics. The only good thing 343 did mechanically was getting rid of bloom. Yet they offset a brilliant move by introducing grenade indicators and flinch to Halo. Some people may like indicators, but I just think they add to the cluttered mess-of-a-HUD that Halo 4 has. I don’t need a blue icon next to my reticle telling me if I’m close to a grenade. However, flinch was almost universally hated. Descoping existed to ensure that long-range weapons like the sniper and the DMR were not too powerful. Adding flinch completely undid the balance that descoping created and stifled movement. The long sight lines and the stability perk, of course, stifled map movement even more. Bullet magnetism was also a severe problem, but I won’t go into detail about it. -Ranks. You may say that a skill-based rank is just a number, but you wouldn’t be any farther from the truth. A dedicated visible in-game rank (VIGR) system makes matchmaking better in every way. The trueskill that all games on Xbox Live servers supposedly have isn’t enough to really filter players into their respective skill groups. Halo 2 and 3 both had VIGR systems that worked beautifully; to this day, the latter’s ranked playlists still give you games with players with ranks relatively close to yours. Even Reach had some form of ranks (Arena). -Search filters, or lack thereof. Halo 3 and Reach both had filters to make searching and matching better, like the options to only search for good connections or similarly skilled players. Even if they didn’t help, the ability to customize search options gave people a little more control over the game. Do you need more reasons or is this enough?

Sprint (self explanatory). Custom Loadouts. Halo was always about a level playing field, this completely negated that. Flagnum. Remove juggling so we can equip a pistol with flag? This is a minor gripe. Vehicles made of paper mâché. Minor gripe, but BtB wasn't as exciting IMO. Too many one hit kill weapons. Explain to me how they add to the sandbox? Lack of options. Previous games allowed you to tailor the experience to however you wanted. Armor abilities in general. This goes back to the even playing field argument. Weapon ordinance. This added randomness to the game, something that should never be present in an Arena shooter.

    • Custom games and forge were gutted. With the flood character models being melee only, so many good modes were unreplicatable. The forge options, while still impresive, could never match forge worlds scale and freedom. The inclusion of four precision weapons that you could spawn with made the suppresser and storm rifle obsolete from the get go, and even with that aside, they were poorly balanced against the AR, which outdamaged them at anything outside of whisper range. Spawning with plasma pistols was a nice option to counter vehicle spam, but vehicles could hardly take any damage to begin with. The perks were so minor that they made no difference, and all of the armor abilities, save for promethian vision, were poorly implimented. The boost dodge wasnt fast enough to really dodge anything. The hard light shield was far too vunerable. I found some use for the turret, jetpack, and promethian vision, but negligible use at most. It wasnt BAD, it just wasnt very engaging, and most of the changes detracted from the experience because they felt poorly thought out and tacked on.

    • Halo 4 disregarded map control, power weapons, the "holy triangle" of grenades, melee, and guns, etc. It nearly destroyed everything the made the original Arena-style gameplay so good. Please watch this video on what went wrong with Halo 4's multiplayer; he explains it better than I can (in writing at least). ( Don't be thrown off by the title, he only talks about Halo 4 MP; also, this was posted way before the Halo 5 MP Beta).

      • It wasn't bad at launch, but now for me in BTB there is always at least one person with a horrible connection, teleporting across the map. Also, I don't like waiting for minutes waiting for the game to find a proper host. I didn't mind the loadouts too much because the best possible loudout was not OP. Overall I liked the multiplayer, especially when playing with friends.

      • Weapon drops, auto aim, no skill gap, poorly designed maps, vehicles made of paper, incineration cannon, no dual wielding, no skill based ranking system, etc.

      • For me, it just didn't feel right. It wasn't bad but at the same time it wasn't great. I didn't like heavy weapon drops or the fact that there were no power weapons on the map. Having timed power weapons added a learning curve as well as a little competiveness to see who would get the heavy weapon and control the game. Heavy drops made it a little too easy. I also feel like they tried to put too many primaries in the game and that took away from the balance. Rathet than making it a choice between 2 really good guns to use as your primary, you have 4 really mediocre guns to use. The maps didn't seem to flow very well either. I felt like a majority of them encouraged players to simply run in one circular path. Keep in mind I only played for the first few months so I have no idea what has happened since then. If they fixed that stuff then I'd be willing to give it another try.

        343 made it!
>Progression system rather than trueskill ranking >No equal starts >Armour abilities >Custom load outs (ability to equip a plasma pistol from start, enabling you to disable vehicles from the off, therefore making them useless). >Ordinance drops Sprint personally I have no problem with it but a lot felt this made the game feel less like Halo and made it less competitive. Doesn't mean I personally didn't enjoy it and I had a lot of fun playing it with friends and solo. I liked some of the new game types such as Dominion and Regicide, the maps weren't bad either most of them. Thankfully 343 due to feedback and no matter what some haters may say, have listened to the communities feedback and reversed everything above. Sprint remains but there is a penalty to using it, your shields don't recharge until you are stationary. Whoever tells you that the Halo 5 beta is like COD AW, never actually played it or are just trolling. I played both and its total BS what some people will say. Oh well haters will hate and some will hate anything post 2007/10.
These are all my opinion •Loadouts don't work for Halo •Maps weren't too good •A lot of OP weapons •Infection was really stupid •Sprint makes it too fast paced Edit: With a bad forge and by ruining the infection game type, 343i also effectively destroyed custom games as a whole in Halo, and that was the biggest attraction for me.

"BUTH SPRUNT WAS SOO BADH!" So you're saying that we're physically augmented super soldiers from 500 years into the future, who have been extensively trained in how to move around in and operate the suit... but we can't run?

          • I was moderately OK with it for the most part. The loadouts, drops, annoyingly large map sizes, and overall gun play kept me from enjoying it though. That and their flood mode sucked.

Sprinting Ordinance Personal Loadouts (Spawn with camo and boltshot wtf?) Armor Abilities Vehicles no longer mattered (spawn with plasma pistol + sticky nades) No longer needed to memorize weapon spawns, instead they are given to you No equal starts etc.

              • I liked the legendary BR variant. Equal starts, but many still hated Sprint My main gripes were flinch, promethean vision and most AAs except thruster. Hated bolt shot as well especially when the glitch was there. Ideally I would have preferred most AAs to be pick ups Spartans fight for. A new flavor of power pick up. Same with boosts , there shouldn't have been ordnance. I think a ranked equal starts mode would have salvaged the game for many players who gave up. Load outs were like whatever to me. I didn't get why we needed to unlock stuff. People don't play halo for xp progression. The only progression people cared about were ranks Weapon load outs are great for a campaign or co op tho. I think commendations were better. From reach I think it was right? Where your progress with weapons....beat downs...assassinations...all that great stuff is recorded through progress...if I'm totally off correct me since its been awhile since I played reach lol. I still played a lot of halo 4 tho. I like halo too much to stop. Halo is the only game I know of that has shield bursts and head shots in it. Every other game has precision damage on head shots. So since halo doesn't have that while shields up (minus snipes etc.), there's so much diversity to how you gain kills and evade deaths through maneuvers and map situations. You don't really play any other game like halo. Course....you still aim and shoot. .but...I'm sure you get what I'm saying. Pre weapon tune, I almost gave up on the game though. People were right about the dmr at that point. Post weapon tune, the dmr and br had definitive roles on the map. There were a lot of trial and errors in halo 4. Lots of new features that didn't work, but I'm glad for the most part halo 5 took away a few that did work. Very excited to see how it all comes together later this year.

              • >Sprinting ruined pacing >Loadouts rendered certain playstyles useless >Game was severely unbalanced for about 6 months >No true skill ranking. I'm fine with that level up stuff to give bad players a sense of accomplishment, as long as there is also a true skill ranking system in place.
