New to the Iron Banner? Here are some quick tips and tricks to get you started.
Basic Tips for Iron Banner!
1) Light Level Matters ... Some.
You'll want to compete at the highest Light Level you can manage to optimize your damage and defense against other competitors. This extends to your weapons, too - go into battle with your most comfortable, most developed current-gen weapons. The differences in level, defense, and attack strength are fairly well balanced to keep the little guy from being utterly overpowered, but there are advantages to being better equipped than the other guy.
2) Iron Banner Bounties
Six bounties will be offered daily, three of which are exceptionally manageable to do. Don't fret too much about doing all of them each day, since a couple of them can by fussy to complete, just make sure you get some of them done each day before rollover.
3) Rank Faster with Tempered
This buff is provided by Lord Saladin for the cost of a Mote of Light. Go into combat buffed for a gain in Iron Banner reputation accrual. The buff lasts 12 hours - plenty of time for a day's play.
4) Rank Faster as the Week Progresses
Each day, the Tempered buff becomes more effective. On Day 1 it is its least effective at a 10% Bonus, but each day it improves until on day 7 it is its most effective at a whopping 150% Bonus.
Be Warned! Don't wait until Day 7 to do all your playing and ranking up - you'll find it incredibly tough to hit your goal, especially with only one day's worth of Iron Banner bounties available to help you along.
5) Rank Faster with Iron Banner Swag
At rank 1, you will have access to a name plate Emblem, the Sigil of the Iron Lords. Buy it. Equip it while you compete. You will then receive 10% more Reputation in Iron Banner activities and when turning in Bounties.
At rank 2, you will have access to the Million Million Shader. Buy it. Equip it. Looks good, yeah? You will then receive another 10% more Reputation in Iron Banner activities and when turning in Bounties.
At rank 4, you will have access to a Class Item, a Bond, Mark, or Cloak. Buy it. Equip it. You will then receive yet another 10% more Reputation in Iron Banner activities and when turning in Bounties.
After the Iron Banner, hang onto all of these things for the next Iron Banner, so you can really hit the ground running with a full 30% bonus to reputation. Remember also that the Emblems and Shaders are transferable among your characters.
6) Reforging
You will be able to reforge (reroll) the perks on any Iron Banner weapons you find or buy. Each reforge will cost 2 Motes of Light. Each reforge is a gamble, and as with any gamble, you need to be aware of when to cut your losses and run, and need to know when enough is good enough.
7) Shopping and Glimmer
Everything Lord Saladin sells is freakin' overpriced all to hell. Expect to go Glimmer bankrupt. Expect to have to go farm up some more Glimmer. Anticipate maybe going Glimmer bankrupt again. Prioritize buying reputation gain enhancing gear, mentioned above, since they are gifts that keep on giving.
8) Don't Forget Crucible Bounties While Competing
You can carry 10 Bounty assignments at a time; that should be your 6 Iron Banner bounties and another 4 Crucible bounties. Don't forget to get some regular Crucible Bounties while you're grinding the PVP side of Destiny. Wear the correct Class Item while turning in bounties to boost the reputations you want.
9) Winning and Losing Matches
If you win, congratulations! You earn some reputation! If you lose, however, you get a consolation prize in the form of an Iron Banner Medallion. This you will carry until you are victorious, and it will then confer a reputation bonus equal to 80% of a win to your next victory. You will only be able to carry 5 of these Medallions at a time, unfortunately, so any losing streak after 5 losses is going to be pure beatdown. Keep fighting - that victory is on the horizon.
After all that, it's just you, your guns, and wrecking other guys in the face. Good luck!
