Why do people say "toon"?

The title says it. I always see people on here calling their other characters "toons". What the hell does that mean? What is it from? Can we talk normal please? Edit: Ok. So I see many people think I'm butthurt about this, but let me clarify, I just wanted to know why people use it, where it came from, and why they decided to use it in destiny. That was all.

toon comes from mmo game players; early mmo games made your character look cartoonish, so instead of calling it a character or avatar or persona people refereed to them as a toon. and it stuck with some people and no matter if characters have changed and no longer look cartoonish they are still refereed to as a toon by those people. It is not a matter of being lazy it is a matter of calling them what that player considers them nothing more than a toon or non living thing, nothing important. I had a level 89 toon in WoW and and a 92 in Diablo 2. I dont consider them avatars or persona's or anything representing me at all.
