The title says it. I always see people on here calling their other characters "toons". What the hell does that mean? What is it from? Can we talk normal please?
Edit: Ok. So I see many people think I'm butthurt about this, but let me clarify, I just wanted to know why people use it, where it came from, and why they decided to use it in destiny. That was all.

-
1 ReplyIt's easier than typing Character or Guardians.
-
I just flat out say character. No laziness here.

Edited by LordofChaos: 4/23/2015 1:21:45 PMtoon comes from mmo game players; early mmo games made your character look cartoonish, so instead of calling it a character or avatar or persona people refereed to them as a toon. and it stuck with some people and no matter if characters have changed and no longer look cartoonish they are still refereed to as a toon by those people. It is not a matter of being lazy it is a matter of calling them what that player considers them nothing more than a toon or non living thing, nothing important. I had a level 89 toon in WoW and and a 92 in Diablo 2. I dont consider them avatars or persona's or anything representing me at all.

Their from Newcastle. Everything is toon up there
-
I thought that was weird too. In any game I played my friends and I used the term "char" when referring to our guys.
-
1 ReplyMost likely ex- WoW players as that is where that term originated.
-
Ive never heard of it until now

Car-toon? Video game characters are like cartoons I guess.

4 RepliesPeople who say "toon" are as bad as Bush- who did 9/11

Toon is a really old school word for your video game character
-
2 RepliesI call them "chars" or "character". But it's pretty impresive to see how many people can get pissed by only one word.
-
Pulled this from somewhere not my words. ETYMOLOGY Toon is presumably a contracted form of cartoon; video game characters are animated, after all. The origin of this term can be attributed to the standard root of all leetspeak (internet jargon): a need for efficiency for lazy typists. Toon is probably used because it is shorter and easier to type than the word character. Anyone familiar with these games can easily surmise the meaning of the term from context. Furthermore, the term avatar is avoided as it can possibly create confusion. In roleplaying games, avatar also refers to the incarnation of a deity. I have 6 toons, so I have all the professions spread among them and I can craft anything!

Its the term most MMO players have used for years. It has carried over to Destiny.
-
well we use to use that term for having another account on say facebook to play those games that you could technically only use your account for one purpose or build. it was a way to try something new, farm, cheat etc etc. why it's migrated here I haven't a clue other then a lack of acknowledging the difference. just like saying you main an class when your 32/31 across the board with the other two classes. yes you play one more than others but you still took the time to level the others up so technically there's definitley interest and time spent there.

1 ReplyCan you please let us all know how you define normal so we can ensure we don't hurt your feelings.

Yeah, seems odd really.

3 RepliesWhy do you care?

Cause they read too much Enders game.

"Toon" really sounds silly, and to those that say it's MMO talk.... You do realize Destiny ISN'T a mmo, (only aspects). I also never heard of the term anywhere except here.
-
My younger brother has a easier time pronouncing "toon" than "character" because of his slight speech impediment, but it sounds like he's saying "tooth" lol
-
toon just sounds retarded
-
Wow! You idiots are really upset by this.
