Neo, devin is great, you owned him

Isn't it grammatically correct to say he when saying something about someone who you don't know the gender of? EDIT: Keep in mind, I haven't read the entire thread... [Edited on 09.28.2008 10:17 AM PDT]

Off Topic, sorta: I have noticed when it comes down to flaming idiots, the flood sides with the intelligent side. I had to dig up this example from the bowels of the flood. Any who want to post idiotic flaming and insulting things generally have all credence taken away. Again though:
The word "he" in this context, like the word "man" when speaking humanity as a whole, is genderless and counts for both sexes. When talking about groups, the male words are generally the default. That does not mean that you are sexist.
simple English, as English does not use gender words often it uses what it has.
Posted by: ObeyedDragoon I don't see the quote as a sexsist remark as it refers to Master Chief.
I didnt tell her it was about the Cheif, lol. We had a topic going on about what makes a hero a hero.
Posted by: DxRock x I've watched this thread continuously deteriorate by every post. Potter, as I see it, you did fire the first shot back on page one. However, other people did respond fairly harshly as well. Much of the comments are now just attacks. Please, just cease posting, all, unless you are going to contribute to the original idea, is that quote sexist. While many of the posts are related to the topic, they attacking one another over personal opinions.

Posted by: DxRock x Yeh thats what i think everyone stop quoting everyone and just stay on topic instead of flaming.
Posted by: SoulPyro Actually it all comes down to who is offended. If someone is trying to diss you, most likely you will be offended. If a statement was made with no harm intended, then its just a statement. When someone, generally who is oversensitive, finds it offensive, thats when the problem arrises. Thats where "politically correct terms" come into play. People started having concerns because a term was too blunt
Did I not say this awhile ago?
-
"A hero need not speak when he or she is gone, for the world will speak for him or her." It just doesn't flow as well.
-
I'd like to say that besides Potter, I'm surprised I saw many intelligent posts here. I usually check the main forum and my private groups, I should come to the Flood more often
Posted by: Potter2524 Just drop it. I dropped you a while back, but you keep crawling back and grabbing onto my leg.
Wait, you dropped what now? You comprise of a good 25% of the posts here, much of which is flaming others for having a brain.

Potter, your a lost cause. You keep getting owned post after post, and do not accept your own mistakes even when you blatantly start fights (that have been quoted again for proof) and admit to misreading peoples posts (but then go on to say that the mistake is irrelivant). You go on like you are trying to combat racism and ignorance yet you openly admit to grouping people of the same nationality (like you ex with the mexicans) all the way to assuming all people in an entire continent are a-holes. I think you dont know where your going with this and you are just looking for a fight. If im wrong and your just trying to express your opinions, make sure you represent and understand what your words mean before you fire them off in every direction so you dont look like a massive hypocrit and an insecure person with shallow beliefs. No one is angry at you for thinking the poster is sexist but when you point the finger and call everyone sexist who thinks the quote is unnoffensive then people are very likely to get angry. Especially when they probably dont think its sexist because they themselves are not sexist and do not group people together depending on geographical relations or ethnic groups like you have already admited to doing. gg
Posted by: Potter2524 I'm going to bed now, 2:45AM. I would've gone to bed ages ago, but I didn't want to abandon my fight and look like a coward. My view is out there.
Out there in the Flood of nonsense, never to be remembered except for being the real skeptic here with dry eyes at nearly 3 in the morning trying to prove himself through text in B.net forums no less. See you around, you shall not be missed EDIT: Oh, and Spaz, you make a great point that sadly Potty will never see eye to eye in life. [Edited on 09.28.2008 9:46 AM PDT]

well, from what you've told us, she tends toward feminism, and she makes an argument out of something that isn't looking for one. historically, the default pronoun for an unknown gender has always been "he." it's not sexist unless it actively discriminates against women. using the pronoun "he" is in no way sexist unless it blatantly insults women or women's rights. it's a problem of being "politically correct." so, then, the issue is not with the quote on the poster, but with the teacher and her ignorance. No its not a win, ITS AN EPIC WIN!
Posted by: Mopy09 If someone heard the quote, but didn't know it was about one person who is a male, then labeling it as sexist would make sense to them.
This was my view Most quotes you can expand into wider topics. The one which started this topic could about the Hero could be expanded into wider topics. So for those people interested in those other topics who have not heard of Halo 3 would see it as sexist and this was where I was coming from. When sexism was brought in, I widened it to Racism. I'm going to bed now, 2:45AM. I would've gone to bed ages ago, but I didn't want to abandon my fight and look like a coward. My view is out there.
Posted by: Potter2524
Posted by: GRIM 0 VERASOUL The OP was just making a statement about his ridiculous teach calling the ad's quote sexist, ... nah, this is a great laugh, thanks Potty
Actually he asked if we think it is, I thought it was in which I defended. Then I was bagged so I fought fire with fire. I hope it's been a great laugh! I'm glad I beat NeoShogun, he wasn't going anywhere and was adding to the arguement.
Uh.......when did you beat me, I went off to eat.
Posted by: Mopy09 Alright, this started as a legitimate argument, but quickly turned into an over the top fight. Going back and forth about who started what doesn't help in any way. Potter, people are mad with you because you looked into posts in which the writer had no sexist/racist implications, and made them sexist/racist. You labeled an entire group (Americans) as ignorant. You were trying to hold a legitimate argument, but consistently contradicted yourself. I don't even know why you brought up the war in Iraq. Point is, people in this thread, not just you, got a little high strung, and people should just calm down and stop fighting over who started it. The quote could be defined as "sexist" because it is talking about one sex, and not both. However, that is not a bad thing because it's talking about an individual who is a male. If someone heard the quote, but didn't know it was about one person who is a male, then labeling it as sexist would make sense to them. I just fail to understand how anyone could be offended by something if no offense was intended. Oh, and the sentence could become unisex if it were rewritten as such: "A hero need not speak when they are gone, for the world will speak for them". Problem solved.
Most insightful post yet. A comment is only prejudice if it's meant to insult what you're prejudice against. When someone makes a simple statement, trying to break things down without offense, it's not Sexist/Racist, Potter just fails to see that. I wonder how he feels I'm an Extremely Prejudice person? We'll see, soon enough
Posted by: Potter2524 Just drop it. I dropped you a while back, but you keep crawling back and grabbing onto my leg.
Because you refuse to admit that you said the first insult.
Posted by: Potter2524
Posted by: GRIM 0 VERASOUL Potter, most African-Americans are okay with being called Black, as Caucasians are okay being called White, it's become a simple informal phrase we are comfortable with. You have to open up your mind, not everyone is prejudice to an extreme extent, but being a bit prejudice is in every humans nature. I'm actually trying to resolve this conflict here, so try not to flame
I guess you're one extreme while I'm the other. I have a tendency to generalize because not many pick out out the small things. But I know not everyone isn't prejudiced, I know that. That was a simple story, and obviously the frowner felt it was racism. I simply annalysed it. One thing I've learnt in history is not to generalize, not to say all or none. You have to say some or most. So with that said, I never would've said they all felt prejudiced...
Look I'll admit to having slightly different reaction towards a white person rather than a black person. But when it really comes down to it it doesn't really matter. I don't hold it against them that they're black. Or white. Skin color is like eye color or hair color. I prefer red heads over blonds but will still happily be friends with a blond. Am I racist or human?
