If you got from level 1-20, then got legendary gear to reach 26+ to do high level weeklies to earn coins...in 2 weeks, that is more than earning.

Xur sold strange coins at that time, and there was also a glitch were people were getting more coins then they were supposed to. You didn't have to be level 20 to buy it either.

2 weeks? I had to do that shit in one day, I remade my 3rd character and he was lvl 2 the day of the first icebreaker selling. Damn son I still got those coins
