Why KD means nothing in the Crucible

I'll admit up front my KD is not very good, but this is my first console FPS . . . and my kids play this account also, so there is that. But I was so frustrated because I felt like I was doing pretty good and making progress but my stats only seemed to inch up. So, I decided to quantify my experience to figure out what was going on. I played 8 control matches each on both my hunter and Titan and wrote down whether I was placed in a "match in progress" or against an organized fireteam and what my KD and assists were. Here is what I found. 1. Only 5 of the matches actually counted my Kills and Deaths correctly. Most of the matches counted a few too many deaths while one match counted too many kills. 2. Out of the 16 games, Bungie placed me into 8 games already in progress. One where the team was winning and 7 where they were losing . . . Bad. . . this is a problem that Bungie has. People quit games that are clearly over and then Bungie puts people in there for slaughter sake. Raise your hand. . . who enjoys being put in a match where the other team is dominating by thousands of point and now spamming supers? I quit all of those. . . sorry for whoever took my place. Create a slaughter rule to avoid this. 3. At least three matches were against 5 men fireteams and one against a 3 man fireteam. . . Bungie, don't place randoms against coordinated teams. I would be ok with going against 3 men teams. . .but to me 4 or more makes no sense if you are trying to create enjoyable gameplay. In one case I quit the game before it even began, when I was placed into the next match . . . IT WAS THE SAME EXACT GAME!!!! 4. Lag is out of this world in some matches. In one case a Titan stood on top of my lightning grenade as it went off three times and I was firing at him. . .He apparently one shot killed me with SUROS. Another time (these are just the extreme examples) a warlock blinked in and out of existence all around the map as I shotgunned him twice and melee'd him multiple times to end up dying to his melee. Bungie, please at least admit you have a lag issue. For games that I was actually able to play an entire game I managed a 1.0, 1.44, 3.25 on my Titan. Games that pitted me against a coordinated fireteam: 0.4 (2/4), 0.6 (2/3), 0.5 (2/4) Some of these were actually shortened games also. These are also my stats that I kept. Full games on my Hunter: 1.1, 2.09, 1.11, Shortened games 0.3 (1/3), 2.0 (3/1) and I quit 3 other maps there were already loosing by more than 2:1 when I entered. To me, these issues are far worse than the shotgun issue . . . What is more, is I can't find where Bungie even acknowledges any of the real pvp issues. That is really frustrating that they seem to be ok with it. Edit: most you that comment didnt even read the post before commenting. Totally missed the point.

  • One thing about Crucible.... The word 'competitive' should never be applied to Destiny PvP. Ever.

Last time I checked, I had a positive k/d, but OP is right on the money about lag. I noticed that every other game is either terrible or not bad. One match I'll wreck shop with 20+ kills and win, while the next game I'll not even be able to land a single Thorn shot on players that I'm actually aiming at and perfectly shooting. My Defender sticky grenades will go right through players, and if my grenade is in the air on it's way to my opponent and he shotguns me, my grenade disappears when I die as if I never threw it. If the host is a hunter doing the teleport shotgun thing, they are invulnerable as they'll be about a half second ahead of everyone else. BTW, I only even play Crucible for extra bounties. Until Bungie adds a competitive playlist and private matches, Crucible will continue to be a bad experience for most people.

      • Why K/D doesn't matter in any video game. Scrubs that are going negative can just turn off their system. Stats safe after match ends.

        • The scoring system in pvp actually encourages bad play. A player can score 3000 points and go negative k/d and place very high on the leader board, but what it doesn't show is that the same player gave up more points than he actually scored. Players score should read as negative and be at the bottom, instead he/she think they are decent players because they are 2or 3 on the board.

          • KD is important because no matter what game mode you are playing points are based on kills so if you have more kills than deaths you are helping out your team and if you have more deaths than kills you are hurting your team

            • I've been put into games where while I was still in the loading screen(with my ship) it said the game was over and my team lost/won. What's worse is that I've even gotten decent rewards for it.

Doesn't matter. If you struggle to go positive no matter what the situation is, you're not as good as you think you are. Got put into a game? Cool, finish it off, win or lose doesn't matter. If you can't achieve more kills than deaths, then don't bother making excuses

I started doing this last week and my matches and mental health have improved greatly #2 if you do end up in a lobby that is underway, on your way in from ship travel go to roster. It will show your team and you can click on someone's name and check the score. If your team is getting blown out than go to settings and select change character. It's not your fault they are losing so badly, so you shouldn't feel bad, nor should you take the loss for no reason #3 always monitor the roster before the match starts. If you see you are in a lobby with a team of 6 it might be a good idea to back out, but then again if they drop a team of 4 or 5 in there with you to play against the 6 man team then you should stay and play it out #4 slaughter rules are annoying and should be removed entirely from the conversation and from destiny. Both stopping a match in progress or sending players to orbit after a bad loss fly in the face of free will. #5 destiny should absolutely have a solo players only playlist. However if you follow my first three steps you will find better balanced games

                  • Have you ever heard of a great player with a great K/D say "K/D does't matter"? That's what separate us great players from you scrubs. We win, you loose and that will be the end of that. If you don't understand the extra points for kills, then I'm done with this irrelevant conversation.

                    • KD matters more than people think. It is a general indicator of whether or not you are contributing to your team or hurting it. Outside of KD sure, # of kills matters to show you aren't just camping and getting 3 kills in a match. The only problem I see with KD as a metric is that people quit matches if they aren't doing well to preserve their KD, which is super scrubby.

I stayed cos not a quitter, only had respect for 1 of my opponents as the other 2 teabagged every chance they got. Either way I don't care about KD, only doing crucible cos nothing else to do lol

                      • Hmm well I agree with some points, and I'd say players with K/D in between 0.8-1.3 this applies, but when players have higher K/Ds than this it does matter. My K/D across all game types is an average of 2.06, and I can't say there's ever been a 1.9 K/D player who could consistantly whoop my ass. Visa versa I don't think I could consistently whoop a 2.1 player's ass. Generaly players with high K/D have played a lot of games too. So even if there are some mess ups in the stat recording, it's not going to affect it greatly. Therfore K/D is a good reflection of personal skill.
The Combat Rating statistic is even more accurate.
• There are problems but everyone deals with the same problems. You have a point with the coordinated fireteams. Those are the people you see with the 2.5+ inflated K/D when they are nowhere near that good. Id say KDR is a good indicator of how good someone is, but they can definitely be better or worse depending on the conditions they play under. Just waiting for ranked rumble =D

                      • Kd matters to people who don't get wasted and play or have an itch to only melee for entire rounds... I like doing stupid shit ruins my Kd but I stopped caring about that along time ago... getting wasted and trolling is more fun than maintaining a 2+ Kd imo.

When I play with players over 2.0 k/d they happen to be very good. When I play with players who have 1.5 k/d, they suck. K/d is probably the only thing that matters in destiny pvp, since there is no competitive ranking, and the iron banner is sloppy af.

                        • 1-disagree 2-agree 3-disagree 4-agree Overall assessment: K/d matters in the sense that you need to make most points as possible without giving the points with deaths. No point in doing objective if your going .60, would be better if you defend what you currently have.

                        • I always finish my matches, but I usually check before the match during orbit to see if there's a fireteam, if so I usually cancel matchmaking. If I end up going against a fireteam greater than 3, it usually spells a bad match for me since it's gonna mean someone's in my team full of randoms is going to feed kills to them.

                        • KD isn't everything, but its not nothing. KD represents how many points you contribute to your team against how many points you feed to the other team. If you have a negative KD, you helped the other team more than you helped your own in most circumstances. It also represents your overall gunskills. If you aren't going wih a KD above 1, you are losing more encounters than you are winning. This means you aren't contributing kill points to your team, rather to the other team, And you most likely aren't capturing zones either since you can't stay alive long enough to do that. Also, joining a game late where you only get two kills isn't going to significantly affect your KD, so it is actually pretty accurate regardless of what games you spawn in. Ive joined in games that were almost over, went 0-4. Next game started from the beginning, when 23-4. the 23-4 game is going to hold much more weight. Also, if KD meant nothing, it means everyone could go negative and win frequently. I don't know if youve noticed, but 95% of the games are won by the team with more people with positive KDs than the other.

                        • I can agree that the whole point of PvP is to dish out more than you take, but KDR is a misleading stat. I can late join a match at the end, kill two guys, not die, and have a 2.0 K/D. Your CR will still go to shit because you didn't make a significant contribution to the match because you only had a short amount of time to do your thing. Scoring points and wins are what matter in the Crucible. K/D is just a part of that.

                        • In skirmish, it can be more profitable to the team to die so you can get the assist and your teammate can get the revive points. K/D is completely irrelevant. The scoring system sees to that.
