Racism/Sexism in gaming
I'm currently doing a project researching abuse, sexism, and racism in gaming. If you could answer these simple questions I would appreciate it.
Interview questions-
Q: Have you ever experienced actual abuse via gaming (talking over mic)? (Including racism and sexism)
Q: If so, how often are you subjected to this?
Q: How many times have you witnessed this happening to people?
Q: How often do you play games?
Q: Have you ever received an offensive message? If you have, can you tell us what it said?
Q: Do you participate on hating/being racist and sexist on people?
Q: What age range are the people who verbally abuse others?
Q: What game do you play that you see the most excluding COD?

A: nope, because I only talk with my friends on the mic. everything is just "banter" as we brits say. A: not subjected at all A: a few times, I usually step in if it gets rough. A: most of the time A: yes, I have been called -blam!-, retard and dumb -blam!- in the past A: no, only jokingly with friends (Banter) A: usually too young to be playing 18+ games, though there are a few older assholes out there as well. A:Borderlands 2 and GTA at the moment, but thinking about going to Wolfenstein again.

It's just banter. The internet goes straight for race and gender because they see it as low hanging fruit, but the truth of the matter is that they'll say anything to piss you off. My mother evidently spent the night at the homes of 6 different 12 year olds yesterday in order to make money for 3 different drugs. If it's a problem for you, block them. That simple.

My balls dropped pretty early on so I had a deep voice as a child and as a teenager. One guy did tell my brother to go get cancer and die because my brother was beating his ass in Injustice. Good times were had and we laughed it off. Q: If so, how often are you subjected to this? A: Never. If I was, I would either challenge them or I could mute them. Q: How many times have you witnessed this happening to people? A: Never. Unless you count the two or three times I heard someone say "Ura fag" in a Halo lobby. Q: How often do you play games? A: Pretty often. Q: Have you ever received an offensive message? If you have, can you tell us what it said? A: I don't remember. I got hate mail once because I stomped on a clan in battlefield. I haven't seen enough of it to really determine a trend. Usually, they are fairly young. Q: What game do you play that you see the most excluding COD? What do you mean? What game do I play aside from CoD that I see the most? Probably Destiny, Halo, GTA or Battlefield.

Halo, Minecraft, Real Life, every multiplayer game in existence...

What's the exact topic? Your questions center on people who play games, not the content in games. Female space soldiers with crazy amounts of cleavage is an example of sexism.

Most of the time when I hear someone being racist it's a child or teenager just being straight up hateful. Sexism seems to come from just about every demographic though. Most of the time you see a lot of both of these behaviors in competitive games like first person shooters. The whole thing usually ruins team communication since nobody wants to deal with that crap. I myself am usually in party chat with my brother and a couple buddies of ours. I bet a lot of others do the same or just turn off voice chat. [u]Lesson[/u]: The Internet is a wonderfully terrifying place.

Mostly when I was 13-15 when my voice was really high (I generally have a higher pivoted voice than most men). U mostly got trash talked for no reason. I never really spoke with people online, usually it would be when I would be talking to an old friend of mine on Xbox live his friends would shot talk me. Q: If so, how often are you subjected to this? Not anymore unless I start the fight. I never torment younger kids because the psychological impact it had on how I see myself. And when I start fights it's never personal. Q: How many times have you witnessed this happening to people? Whenever their is a preteen in a lobby with a mic. Q: How often do you play games? 20 hours a week average. Q: Have you ever received an offensive message? If you have, can you tell us what it said? Mostly hate speak about my age and whatnot. Not anymore. Q: Do you participate on hating/being racist and sexist on people? No. Q: What age range are the people who verbally abuse others? 11-29 Q: What game do you play that you see the most excluding COD? Halo and minecraft.

[spoiler]-Kids saying they'll get me banned for hacking (Not a hacker, they just get mad) -People telling me I suck at games (Only got these for winning) -People trolling for their friends -R-pe mail (Some in extreme detail about how I would be bleeding out of my vag, being choked, etc, etc... I'm happy to say they were reported) -A few clans, long time ago, would declare "War" and try to follow people I knew/me into matches. They would do their best to kill or annoy us. -Etc that is obvious I'm not the only one right....?[/spoiler] 5) I can't think of a time I have, I have avoided confirmed 7 year olds before, without telling them. Mostly (If not only) because they would follow me around and interfere with what I was doing so.... 6) Most I get are text, a few sometimes get the courage to speak. Those rare few are late teens by the voice alone. 7) Haven't played a whole lot recently, and excluding CoD that leaves the main one out. But I will say that all I've gotten is exclusively from FPS games. Some I got in Destiny back in the days I really played it, some battlefield, once I got GTA fan mail...

I hear racism almost everytime I log into GTAO, and 9 times out of 10 the racist remarks come out of a squeakers squeak box.
