I personally feel that the crucible is quite rhetorical as it serves no purpose but to entertain people who like to run around and kill their friends or random people and complete exotic bounties.
Which is no real reason to have pvp in the first place as the bounties for exotics could do without the pvp portion and add in a pve portion instead.
They could have just added a daily nightfall mission or strike which has a low chance of dropping exotics like 10% chance of exotic drop, that means out of every ten daily nightfall completions you would get one exotic weapon or armor piece. That would satisfy the need to have a reason to return to the game each day for other than upgrading weapons through bounties and patrols. Strikes could also be improved upon as the bosses could give the chance for legendary gear from the vendors depending on what faction class armor your character has equipped, as well as upgrade material, like ascendant materials from the normal strikes and radiant materials from the omigul strike. Truth is that bungie gave us a half decent game with little to do and so added the pvp into it, hoping that it would solve the problem.
