Bioshock was made to prove Atlas Shrugged wrong

Hear me out. I just finished reading Atlas Shrugged, which is pretty much fiction that all glorifies Objectivism (Ayn Rand's philosophy that really only applies to economics but she applies it to literally every aspect of life which is a terrible idea unless you are a hardcore secular. Like, über hardcore). It has been the bible for some and trash for others, but something clicked to me while I was trudging thorough Galt's speech (this is where Rand shows that she is absolutely full of herself. It's 60 pages of Rand shoving objectivism down your throat. Seriously, 60 ). Galt is talking all about how man is entitled to everything he makes. Then my head clicks back to Bioshock and Andrew Ryan, who creates Rapture to have mankind free (I would put quotations around free, but I don't want to piss off too many Objectivism philosophers) and does not have any limitations or laws regarding moral and economic standards of government. Then I realize that Andrew Ryan is spelled with a lot of letters in Ayn Rand, and starts with the same letter. Then it clicks that Frank Fontain's alias is Atlas. Seeing the similarities? Although this is a big conclusion and I may not be completely right, I think that Bioshock was created to show how Atlas Shrugged goes wrong in its themes and morals of life. For example, Rapture's greatest achievement (ADAM and plasmids) ends up destroying Rapture itself because it slowly destroys the mind and body, and Bioshock shows that mankind without any regards in its pure form can turn bad. It also regards that absolutely no religion or ethics in society is not as good as it sounds, portraying Rapture as a den of sex, extreme measures of beauty and physical augmenting, etc. So fear not people. The debate of is Objectivism a good or bad thing might be answered in a video game. People say that video games are just entertainment, but it can really put complicated topics into perspective.

    • BioShock was almost certainly made with Ayn Rand in mind, and at least one review of the game I read when it was released made the connection right away. The problem with this is more or less the same trap that "Atlas Shrugged" falls into: it's a straw man argument. Since the author has complete control of the whole world and every person in it, of course events will play out in such a way as to validate whatever preconceived notions he or she has. The value of these mediums for advancing a certain perspective relies on giving "the other side" a fair representation in the narrative, and in this regard BioShock falls almost comically short: the ideology behind Rapture is presented as disastrous right from the start and its collapse is the result of fictional scientific advances with no real-world parallels. To be fair, I'm not sure of the degree to which the game was intended as a serious political or philosophical critique, but BioWare has slipped this sort of commentary into their games often enough that it's hard for me to believe it's accidental.

      • I have spent tons of time analyzing this! Bioshock is more than simply a video game. It is a philosophical lesson, and a criticism of Ayn Rand. I read the Fountainhead. Perfect opposite of Bioshock as well. Rather lengthy but give it a try if you've got the time. Worth it if you want to make comparisons to the Bioshock philosophical stance.

It makes sense. It wouldn't be a terrible story if there wasn't the undertone that Ayn Rand was a nut case who really believed in it.

        • BioShock was mostly intended as a deconstruction of utopian society using the concept of Galt's Gulch as it would really be like: a world of selfish egotistical elites who destroy themselves by not considering the cons of all their discoveries.

        • I agree to an extent, and I can totally see where you're coming from. Games, movies, stories and other books have been pointing out flaws in various philosophies since we invented language (and philosophies).

        • Lol Ayn Rand. Atlas Shrugged isn't that good of a book and I agree, Rand is so fucking full of herself and it's obnoxious.
