At the end of the day I'm not travelling 100 odd miles to buy 'John Doe' tomato ketchup when Heinz is on the shelf.
My point still stands, it is being sold because people buy it. If no one bought it, it wouldn't be stocked. Shops still have to pay for what they put on the shelves, if they don't make money from that stock they won't sell it.
You can argue that 'X' brand is actually just 'Y' brand under a different name, that may well be true. But if 'Y' brand is obscure and can only be found for sale in the himalayan mountains then I'm damn well buying brand 'X'.
