Yesterday I got my second Hawkmoon from a Roc strike. Which got me thinking about why I barely use the one I've had for 2 and 1/2 months now. I leveled it up, unlocked the main perks, tried it in the Crucible, and... moved on to other guns.
Because I suck with hand cannons in PvP.
I get killed by them all the time- Hawkmoon, Timur's Lash, The Last Word, rare and uncommon hand cannons that I can't begin to name. (Oh, yeah... and Thorn. The troll's hand cannon.) By people who don't suck.
No matter what I do, I can't break the barrier of 0.7 K/D when I use a hand cannon. I get 2 shots on my target, but before I can land the third, I get killed (unless I have complete surprise, or Luck in the Chamber kicks in). I can't seem to consistently land the headshots the way I do with MIDA or Monte Carlo. I've tried several different legendary and exotic models (but haven't got The Last Word yet, maybe that's the one for me?) with no improvement, while I keep getting killed by vanilla hand cannons.
Successful hand cannon users- what is your method? Any tips for me to improve my hand cannon game? Or is my second Moon better put to use as a free exotic shard?
EDIT: Since the OP, Xur has sold The Last Word, with which I have achieved a little proficiency. Not a great amount, but I actually had a positive K/D and scored some headshots in the Asylum yesterday. I also used Thorn tonight for a change (I know, it's a troll weapon) and had a 1.0 ratio with some assists for good measure. So, you know, progress is being made. But I'll always be an auto rifle guy at heart, I suppose.
Thanks to all who've posted their advice.

2 RepliesI don't have that great a KD but I do have some tips which apply to pretty much all handcannons except TLW. TLW just wrecks at short range, what you need is good aim for that gun. 1, There is a rhythm involved in firing Handcannons. If you just spam the trigger you miss, or get body shots. You need to slow down just that slight fraction between shots to get back on target and get that 2nd or 3rd headshot. Just pulling the trigger as quickly as you can will lead to lost 1v1 fights.Remember, Handcannons are all about getting in 2-3 precise shots, not 4-6 quick shots. 2, Until you are rock solid on aiming play defensively. Getting the first shot in with a HC helps immensely, so do not run out and charge enemies. Move slowly, use crouch, play around cover, and find ways to get that first hit in consistently. 3, Take a look at what other players have equipped before the match starts. Are you going up against a team with a lot of MIDAs? Thorns? Red Death? The weapon types your enemies have dictate their playstyle, which means that your counters will be different. You want to stay out of long LoS lanes with Red Death and MIDA. You need to be careful around Thorn at short range. The list goes on but you will figure out how to counter each weapon type with experience.

It's just about practice and getting the feel for the fire rate the hawkmoon is by far the best in the game in my opinion as the fire rate means you can get some shots off But if you really wanna troll try a body shot with the hawkmoon and then a hunter throwing knife to the head with your hunter as it is a guaranteed kill as long as the knife hits a crit shot and if you hit the melee trigger without coming out of the ADS with your hawkmoon it will actually piggy back of the aim assist of your hawkmoon and practically track the target haha

Edited by Divinityx: 5/29/2015 7:40:58 AMListen all you need to do is practice in pve, get crits only and watch yourself improve. Don't just use Hawkmoon. Learn with many other cannons and you'll be good.

2 RepliesEdited by XboxJuan: 5/15/2015 6:38:30 PMI love this post so much... Just goes to show people who hate on Hand cannons they think they can just be picked up and go on kills streaks.. They can't... Stick with it man it's not a shot gun you can't guarantee a kill from the hip they take time to get down.. When you do it's rewarding

3 RepliesUse them enough, and eventually you will stop aiming with the sights and instead kinda aim with the whole screen. Its hard to explain.
-
Watch your breathing. Seriously. Make sure that you're not holding your breath when you encounter an enemy. Breathe steadily and take the extra second to really aim your shots. It's easy to panic when taking fire; hand cannons reward a calm and steady hand.
-
1. Turn off Controller vibration. 2. Turn down your Controller sensitivity
-
Practice. I used to only use autos but the nerf forced me to adapt and change. Now I only use handcannons lol. Use a handcannon in any situation you can. Strikes, patrol, raid. It'll feel more natural in crucible eventually. Good luck
-
3 RepliesHawkmoon is hard to use if you don't use hand cannons I only use hand cannons, and with hawkmoon you have to make every shot count it all about precision shot. Hawkmoon head shots for days, it's my baby
-
Just practice man, practice makes perfect. Also avoid staying in one position, always move and shoot. I forgot how to shotgun once haha
-
Hip firing with Thorn or TLW will vastly improve your k/d. Postivie games!? You did it!! I know a friend who rose from a .70 to a 1.33 k/d by just playing. Keep it up!!! Don't run around either. Walk or crouch, and always slide around corners. In fact, slide every where you go and every chance you get. Sure you may look like putz but you'll be the one walking away from the encounter. Another small adjustment I've implemented - in my side to side movements during fire fights, I throw a crouching ninja nutshot in the mix. All these headhunters not protecting their twig and berries!
-
Practice in PVE. Practice makes perfect. Just keep trying
-
Practice. It was new to me once as well. They are my favorite now. Especially Hawkmoon.
-
I suggest my word . The Word of Crota to eliminate all other guardians...Please?

1 ReplyWith Hawkmoon you espicially have to time your shot don't just spam the trigger. And always aim for the head with Hawkmoon #hawkmoon#masterrace#besthandcannon
-
Hand Cannons reward patience and a steady hand. Don't spam the trigger unless you have to or are sure you can hit your shots. Strafing helps too, since it gives you more time to fire while your enemies are putting their sight back on you. Headshots are key, one headshot and two body shots kills with I believe any HC (dont quote me on that) It will take a while but after a while, you just get a feel for where you need to aim for a headshot, even if your gun is still in the recoil animation From their, just practice and play smart about your engagements. Stick to medium range, don't blindly run around corners or into high traffic areas, and try to put yourself in the better position (behind cover, elevated ect)
-
All you can do is practice man. PVE is the easiest way but you can practice in either mode. PVE will give you more predictable targets and movements as well so that is where I started. I didn't really care for handguns until I started a hunter, whose ability was golden gun at first. I figured that if I wanted to actually kill people with it Id have to start practicing, which I did. Now handguns are my preferred and my skill with one is whats commonly referred to in scientific circles as "mega elite ultra super legit".
-
Practice aiming and hitting critical shots while moving around in pve. It isn't the same, but it is a start.
-
use different "sights" like sureshot is, etc. those make the gun feel slightly different
-
2 RepliesI solely use TLW and I have to say "slowing" down helped a ton. Just relax and have fun with it.
-
Edited by StiviX: 5/13/2015 4:17:20 AMWork on your precision shots. Aim at the neck level and any shot in that region counts as a head shot > holding aces kicks in
-
Press left trigger aim at person press right trigger 3-4 times and nab yourself a kill
-
1 ReplyI use Hawkmoon the most and compared to Thorn or TLW I'd say its the hardest to use. Make sure you ADS before the target comes into view because that split second of the aim animation can be fatal, always try aiming at the head unless you're panicking and aim just a tad bit *above* the head because the aim assist will "pull" your shot down and land the headshot where if you aim at the head sometimes its too low and counts as torso. I also prefer autos and I'd love to go back to my Vanquisher and Suros but oh well..

10 RepliesEdited by chilean sea bass: 5/12/2015 5:00:52 PMIf you're not good with hand cannons in pvp, then you must not be a good at any shooter/multiplayer. Not talkin shit or saying git gud, just stating a fact
