A heavy machine gun can be multiple things, however; without knowing the caliber of the round we use, we can only go by the developers use.
A caliber less than .50 is typically categorized as a light machine gun (e.g. M249) while .50 up to about 12.7 mm is considered a heavy machine gun(e.g. M60).
We could take it back to the WWI term of heavy which means that is a weapon that is capable of sustained heavy fire without the need of a reload(i.e. a rotating barrel/belt fed/cooling system).
Either way you look at it, it is still what the debs say it is. but hey what do I know, I'm just some guy on the interwebs that wants to say in a rude ass way that everyone who has a different opinion than myself is wrong... Oh wait, that's not me! Enjoy you game guardians!

I've got a rifle with a smoking chicken skull on it, that shoots curses. I still call it a rifle.

By that ww1 term its most definitely a HMG. But regardless those definitions are irrelevant to this fantasy world we know as Destiny. And I'm not saying other peoples opinions are wrong. I'm merely stating facts.
