Edit: you guys are killing my battery! Stop replying! Just accept you're wrong and move on. No one is perfect, not even me(though I'm damn close if you ask my girl friend) it's okay!! And yes I'm aware this will get me even more responses. Prove me wrong and shush! Fiiiine! Be jerks. I've disabled notifications for now. Sorry for trying to help you people!
They are heavy machine guns! This is how bungie even refers to them, not LMG!
Edit: this has been very entertaining, thank you all for making this my most popular thread evar! Keep it coming!
But okay, to address a few points that have been made:
First "in the military a machine gun of this size is called a LMG blah blah blah." Well LA de dah! Good for the military! This is not the military, this is DESTINY, a video game, not real life.
Second: "in real life an HMG is mounted on a vehicle or some other stable platform!" Again, this is not real life, this is a video game! Our HMGs are mounted! They are mounted on our big burly space magic wielding guardians. We are strong enough and magical enough we don't need them mounted! Also as a side note I'm curious what people think of the machine guns in Halo that were mounted. Did they go from HMGs when they were mounted but when master chief ripped one off did it become an LMG?
Third, "what about just machine gun, as that's what they are called in destiny." While yes, they are just called machine guns and I applaud your willingness to compromise, they are indeed still HMGs. The heavy part is implied because they go into the heavy weapon slots.
And finally, the quote from bungie, and they obviously know more about their own game than you folks:
HMGs
· Improved HMG projectile networking.

Keep it coming though, I appreciate all the responses even though the vast majority of you folks are wrong. :)
Edit 2: also, yallerhorn, not gallerjorn! And "a lot" not "alot" while I'm educating you guys.

The military calls them lmgs.
-
Xur is bringing Thunderlord tomorrow. That's best LMG in the game
-
I can see why you might make this mistake, I am sure that for a Hunter the "Heavy" machine gun is in fact heavy. It's a common mistake umongst the smaller, more delicate classes. We Warlocks hardly even notice when we equip our STAUPPG, "Super Tiny Almost Unnoticeable Pow Pow Gun". I have even made the mistake before of forgetting I was holding it when I went to grab my ice breaker, but it was OK I just equipped both and was able to easily solo that giant baby Atheon... I mean it's not like I accidentally dropped it on my Crota's End raid slippers accidentally scuffing them and hurting my toe or anything... WARLOCK MASTER CLASS!

.....who gives a shit? It's a video game weapon. It's pretty much a machine gun overall
-
-
Do I give a shit?
-
If it was a heavy machine gun our guardians wouldn't be able to carry them therefore it is light
-
Love my LMG
-
Stop playing the game people!! You were wrong to play the game how you like it!!
-
Who cares
-
actually the correct name is light machine gun
-
I didn't realize it actually mattered... hmm
-
I do what I want.
-
I like how you take the word of Bungie as gospel! "We gave them (The Hive) the moon in the hope it would be enough for them" Or, we gave them a staging area, and are now surprised they plan an invasion from it" The machine guns we see in game are more akin to GPMG's than heavy machine guns. A 'heavy' machine gun is not something you hold under your arm unless you're in Hollywood.

Isn't this a video game? Set in the future...
-
I can't wait if they add new type of weapons into the game then people try to be realistic about the game that's supposedly placed in the future. I can't wait for realistic explanation based on our times weaponry. People forget this is a game...
-
Why can't we call them LMGs? Also I'll call them LMGs if I want to
-
There totally lmgs lol
-
Does any one really care? It's a fantasy game and none of the guns are real lol
-
YA stop calling that a hand cannon it's a primary weapon and hey STHU that's not a shotgun that's a special weapon!

Final Season of Humans 2024 - old
"Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years" wtf? -
I have not got a LMG in such a long time
-
They are actually LMG's scrub. The weapon type is just called "heavy." You don't call a sniper a "special sniper" unless it's retarded
-
That's a tricky one seeing as LMG's can be set up and operated by one person and HMG's usually require more than one person and are most often placed on some sort of mount but LMG's usually use some form of rifle ammunition and HMG's usually use a higher caliber round than that of shoulder / hip fired weapons ... But we do get our ammo from heavy drops so let's chalk it up to guardians are super strong and their machine guns weigh approximately 60 to 80 ibs and they all fire 7.62 or higher caliber round making them heavy machine guns lolz .

Light machine guns are, by military definition (if I remember correctly), automatic weapons that can be operated in the field by typically one or two men. If you ever see video of a unit displacing back and forth, and there's a machine gun that is disassembled with one man carrying the stand and the other carrying the actual "gun" component, that's a light machine gun. Heavy machine guns are larger and typically mounted on a vehicle of some sort. Video games, in general, do nothing to weed out fact from fiction. Even older games like Metal Slug (you pick up the "H" and the announcer yells "Heavy Machine Gun") don't really help. It's like when people say clip instead of magazine. It's a game. Have fun with it.
