"Heavy Ammo, Inbound..."
"Heavy Ammo on the way...!" - Lord Shaax
Heavy Ammo: A discussion of Heavy Ammo in the Crucible/PVP Setting aside all the topics and/or issues with balance of weapons, armor, supers and abilities in the PVP setting of Destiny, I'd like to talk about Heavy Ammo, why I love it, and how it can be so easily ignored by most people.
Opinion: I find Destiny to be more balanced than not. Some people win because they have good guns, but that's why level advantages are disabled, save Iron Banner. Learn to use cover, and your grenades and get the drop. Take a White or Green rarity gun into PvP as a 30+ and have fun.
I feel that Heavy Ammo introduces a twist into Crucible that is not attainable by any other means. I love that players do not get any heavy ammo from the start, cannot use synthesis, and the only means of getting Heavy Ammo is from a timed dropped. (Edit: It has been brought to my attention that you no longer receive heavy ammo from killing a player who has some in PvP. Shameful, I supported that.) Picking up Heavy ammo can mean the difference between victory and defeat, capturing and defending a control point or a humiliating slaughter, or just enough of a point bonus for heavy kills to tip the balance on a 19,500 to 19,250 point game. I really do not think I need to argue to anyone that Heavy Ammo is, basically, free kills. So, the outstanding question is: Why do most players avoid heavy ammo? I could not possibly tell you how many times, regardless of game type (Control, Salvage, Skirmish), or map, that I find myself the only person standing around at the Heavy Ammo drop, waiting for someone else to come get some, before I am forced to take it for myself because there is now a portion of my radar glowing red, and I'd rather not let an enemy pick it up. Mars, Meridian Bay - Blind Watch. Control Game. Capture Zone B. No doubt this zone is of the utmost importance and holds the majority of the fighting for this strategic location. With a couple of well placed rockets, or a brief spray from a machine gun, and the defending team is destroyed. Defending furthermore is a cinch; not only does heavy ammo spawn right next to the point, but you've only got about 2 directions where the enemy can come from, both of which are doors. How easy is it to defend that with a rocket? So when I'm on the losing team, because the enemy has locked down points B and C (the two right next to each other, easy win), and I'm standing alone in the large circulating structure outside A, where the Heavy Ammo spawns, I don't understand why almost every teammates runs past the heavy ammo spawn, and continues to throw their lives away to die at the enemy team, rather than coming up and getting the Heavy Ammo? I'll stand there, waiting, by myself, watching a failing team neglect their chance to win, and think: "This is why you're losing." Heavy ammo isn't meant to be a single players pick up for a free kill. It's meant to be the swinging pendulum of victory or defeat, but it is treated like a second hand freebie. And I just. don't. get it.
