Sorry you had a tough first experience. Youtube videos can carry you only so far – there’s nothing like first hand experience – though I do recommend you spend some time watching a run through or two. Videos explaining certain strats can also be very valuable if you run into situations when you have no idea what everyone is trying to do.
Personally, I'll give a team half a dozen tries on any one particular area in normal VOG (Atheon excepted). If we haven't cleared the Templar, Gorgons, or the Gatekeeper at that point, then it probably won’t happen anytime soon. Some people just don’t have time to run it for hours.
You’re only an idiot if: a) you act like a jerk, b) you don’t keep making an effort, because the raids are tons of fun.

I was expecting it to take hours. I think we got to Aetheon in an hour. I didn't really keep track. I do know that we went back to orbit after an hour and a half. So, I thought it was pretty good up until the last part. Maybe I'm wrong. I've read so many people saying that it takes hours to do a raid I was worried I would have to bail half of the way through. I do plan on watching videos but, I learn much better when I can actually be there and see what's going on and have someone just say "do this now". So many people have offered to help I'm sure it won't be long before I can get through it and not want to cry. Lol.
