You'll often see on here that people will try to discredit or credit another's argument based solely on what their KD is. If it's high, then people give that argument more weighting, and if it's low, they give it less.
This is both ridiculous, incorrect and just utterly nonsensical.
KD ratio in pvp is a measure of how much you die, and how much you kill.
There is no implied skill there, because KD ratio doesn't take into account how that was achieved. You don't know if they are boosting, cheating, taking advantage of their crappy connection and Destiny's lag compensation, or just good.
People seem to want to seek a high KD as proof of their skill, but in reality, it just cannot be the case that someone will get a consistently high KD in a competitive game.
As you do better, the game finds you tougher challenges. As you do worse, the game finds you easier challenges. Unless you are literally the single best player in all of Destiny, you really shouldn't be expecting to float much either side of a 1.0.
A 1.0 says you kill as much as you die. If you were doing better than that, then the game would put you against better opponents, or with even worse team mates, until your score started to settle down a little.
Logically, it's impossible to consistently maintain a high KD unless you're manipulating that system in some way.
KD is so easily boosted, and people do this. Honestly, the next time someone boasts about a 3.0 KD, go and check out their stats. 9 times out of 10, you'll see they have around 7k sniper rifle kills and around 1k of anything else, because sniper camping is the most common means by far that people KD boost by. It's legit, it's not an exploit, and it's easy to do, especially with some rifles that have a really high aim assist (called 'target acquisition' in game).
These people don't get a 3.0 because they are stupidly good at the game and are just wasting everyone in one on one combat. These people camp out in a corner somewhere where nobody goes, and then they snipe when the odd random player happens to wander close by. They'll end the game 5/1, but that's a 5.0 KD.
They'll run from every engagement until they can find a corner. And that's where they will wait, all game if necessary, even for a 2/0 result. They aren't "good" at Destiny because of this.
Then there are your lag switchers, who don't often die because they are actually just cheating. And they do it for KD. There's literally nothing else in this game to cheat for. you don't get a rank, or extra rewards.
And then there are people who just quit out of the games they are starting to die in, and wait for the games where they are matched against people they can beat.
Outside of boosting the stat, there are other reasons why KD isn't really a good indicator of skill, even if it's "legit" (which in any case wouldn't be far either side of 1.0 with normal gameplay).
KD doesn't take account of objective play. For example, in Control, a player may die twice but capture three control points, thereby vastly increasing the points earned by the rest of their team for further kills. Or, in games that use CTF, a flag carrier may not get a single kill, but yet win their game, and score all the points.
KD also doesn't measure the value of your play. A single kill on an enemy who just picked up heavy ammo probably just saved five or six deaths on your team, and is likely worth more than two kills gained elsewhere.
And really, in a game where we have 1 hit kill panic button supers, quick time to kill gameplay, two shot kill red death/thorn, heavy weapons, and often a 6v6 environment.........you really need to question someone claiming a consistent 3.0 or higher KD in 'regular' gameplay. Most of the time, there's another reason.
And the next time you tell someone to 'get gud', I hope you don't mean KD.

That post would actually make sense if it came from someone with a good K/D.

Score Per Minute is far better.

1 ReplyEdited by Aarondelle: 3/29/2015 6:15:49 PMLol, this is coming from someone who hardly plays pvp.

1 ReplySorry but yes, size matters.

No.. It isn't meaningless.. Its virtually everything... You die more then you kill, your team is losing
-
Thank you OP. This is how bad players justify their suckiness - including myself.
-
That or you were teamed up against people who aren't good at PvP. K/D means nothing really.
-
This just in everyone sucks at the game because obviously you can not use this games stats to judge a players skill.

Edited by bigGRNninja: 3/29/2015 1:36:52 PMWell said sir, well said. I do what it takes for the win, sadly this game is now full of try hards and A-holes, so I play for bounties and I'm out. Win/lose when I'm finished with them I'm finished with pvp for the day, they have crapped on what was and could've stayed a fun style of pvp but nope they couldn't let that happen. Thanks douches

Control is considered the most popular game type with clash not far behind. Now considering both game types give you the majority of your teams points from killing others then having a good KD ratio will show your more beneficial to a fire team. However I will agree that regardless of your KD ratio that shouldn't effect if you have any valid points with regards to PvE or PvP unless your a person saying certain weapons need nerfing! If your dying more often by a particular weapon you need to adapt your play to counter that but also look at it this way. Certain weapons are more popular than others in PvP so you'll end up finding you die from some regularly.

To be fair I wont consider anyone under 1.0 KD useful. After your KD tops 1.5 you start to be useful most matches you play. The closer you are to 2.0, less matches you are useless. This is all backed by my own observations so you may or may not agree. I have many friends who have often ridiculous matches; over 50 kills and like 10kd, but their overall kd is not even near 1.5 which shows as they have often awful matches. And anyone who has some kind of fishy playstyle is not included. Examples of that are snipers, campers, rumble only players... etc. You may get ridiculous KDs with those things but Im talking about ordinary control gameplay in these ramblings.

2 RepliesAbove 21,000 Crucible kills with a 2.28 K/D, am I good to your standards?
I skipped half of your shitpost due to a massive wall of text
Don't know my actual kd. I let drunk friends play destiny quite often to try and get them into the game. Never seems to work though lol

Edited by iMurklins: 3/29/2015 1:15:53 PMEven so, I still prefer to die less and kill more, regardless of what others say.

1 ReplyI think you're underrating it in Control. Anything above 1.5 in a position other than last means a player is good. Period. ~0.6 - 1.4 just measures how tight a player plays. You should expect to see low numbers from people who play loose and do risky captures and defences, and high numbers from people who play tight. (If you hold an additional point throughout the game, and your entire team pulls 0.6, you'll still win.) Below 0.6 is an indication that a player is bad. Two zeroes is very good evidence that a player is bad. You simply can't get a KD that low while still being useful. As it's practically impossible to capture a point without accidentally getting some kills and assists, you really have to work at dying to get a ratio that low. You have to keep feeding the opposition kills, whilst not killing anything yourself, and not assisting your team.

4 Replies'Skill' is subjective and is a measure of a certain aspect. For example, if I have a better KD than you I'm more skilled at getting more kills compared to deaths than you. In terms of the bests comparison between players; I believe the best way is to compare KD with average score per game. Seeing as points includes all factors that you suggested... If someone's average is 7000 points whilst getting a KD of 1; they've essentially been null and void in that game as they've given the other team roughly (due to the unknown quantity of bonuses around headshots, location of kills, etc) the same amount of points. Compare that with someone who gets an average of 4000 points and a KD of 2, they have roughly a net average difference of 2000 points in each game.

1 ReplyIt may not ALWAYS indicate skill, but you can't say that it's a useless stat in terms of skill. I know a lot of people across a lot of games that are skilled with all ranges of K/D. Rarely are they below 1.0, but if they primarily play objective based games then they will be closer to 1.0 than those only playing death match type games. So while you do have a point, saying that the majority of people with a high k/d aren't skilled and used some sort of cheesing/cheating to obtain that k/d isn't entirely true. Even if it is true in some cases, you can't pool all high k/d players into an "unskilled" category. It certainly isn't the end-all stat concerning skill, but it certainly isn't irrelevant in all cases

Lol, the lengths some noobs will go to in order to make themselves feel good about their piss poor kds...

This aurgunemt has been around since COD 4...nothing knew here..next post!

The only thing I don't get is people who Lagswitch to win games. Then they do stuff like dance after a match they used bad connection to win. Like how sad could someone be?
-
4 RepliesPeople don't realize that others will delete their character just to boost their kd.

1 ReplyWhat if I average 20 plus kills per game, while averaging a 2.7 kd. What's your excuse then? Kd is on of the best ways to tell someone's skill level, I agree it isn't the only way but it's one of the best. Only the people with low kds use that as argument to try to make themselves feel a tad bit better. I would much rather have two people on my team that can go 3.0, than someone that barely goes positive regardless of how many kills they get, because I know they're not going to feed kills to the other team. What use are you on my team if you get 15 kills but also gave the opposing team 14 deaths? At the end of the day you're helping the opposing team as well by feeding them so many kills, especially on a mode that requires certain amount of kills to win the game.

4 RepliesYour argument died immediately. There is no trueskill matchmaking in this game.
