Alright guardians, now that Xur has been so kind to grace us the holy grail of speedy guns, I figured now would be a great time to open the debate about how to properly pronounce the name of this fantastic scout rifle. We owe it that much, right? Right. Let's hit it.
So my way has always been to pronounce it as "My-Dah". The logic here is that, because MIDA is an acronym, we would pronounce it by using the base pronunciation of the letters.
The consonants seem pretty simple:
-"M" giving the "muh" sound
-"D" giving the "duh" sound (aka giving the D... ATHANKYOUVERYMUCH. anyway...) <-- We're actually going to come back to this at the end of the post because since reasons. Bear with me here guardians.
The controversy strikes when we start debating the vowels:
-"A"? Shouldn't be much of a debate here, I think. "A" should most likely be pronounced as "ah" at the end of this acronym
-"I" Well. Here's where it gets a little testy. I'll fall back on my original logic that, because the letter "I" is pronounced as "eye", I always use that. However, I know a lot of people will, instead, say "mee-dah". My feeling is that that's wrong, but hey, this is an open forum. Debate this?
With all that, I pronounce MIDA as "My-dah"
NOW. Remember when I said I had a story since because reasons? Well. One of my raiding buddies insists on pronouncing the MIDA as "media"... let that sink in for a moment. On a scale of 1 to what-the-actual-what, I would think that pronouncing MIDA as "media" falls somewhere on that scale around "please-stop-talking".
Final thought. #Deej would you be able to weigh in here? Does this whole subject even really matter? Absolutely not. Is it a pet peeve of mine? You're damn right it is.
Be safe out there, guardians.

Edited by Wesperado: 3/27/2015 6:23:51 PMIt is spelled like Midas, as in the king from Greek mythology, which is pronounced in the same fashion as the OP's way, so that's what I'll stick with. Also, the Spanish word "mira" is pronounced very similar to me-duh by native speakers. It literally translates to sight, but commonly used to tell someone to look at something, so if I heard someone call the multi-tool that, I would get a little confused, lol.

MIDA is an old German world. It means "A whale's Vagina"
-
1 ReplyI've always pronounced it me-duh The only issue I have with the logic of "it should be my-duh because I makes an eye sound" is that if we're just pronouncing the vowels like that it should be my-day
-
1 ReplyI know far too many people who call it media multitool. How are people making this mistake? Ffs

Pronounced suxs

MIDA Pronunciation [ˈmiða]

Edited by core64: 3/27/2015 4:48:45 PMIt's either my-dah or mid-ah, depending on the use of the "a" giving power to the "i". No where in the English language would it be me-dah or media. That goes for abbreviations as well. I prefer my-dah, like King Midas.

Mid-ah

Edited by wok75: 3/27/2015 4:23:39 PMi pronounce it as mid and the a as ah a bit like how people say larp but they don't say lahrp

I used to call it the midi multi tool cuz I didn't notice the "A" however now I pronounce it as Mid-Ah not My-dah that just sounds ridiculous it should be Mid(like middle)-Ah everyone I know pronounces it this way...

When I first started playing my cousin and friend were calling it media multi-tool. When I saw it online I was like, "ugh I know retards"
-
I'm My-dah It's like me-lee and some people say me-lay
-
I say me-duh.
-
I say my- dah but I've heard a lot of people call it me-dah
-
'my-dah' would be the correct pronunciation using other languages like Spanish, French, German it would be 'me-dah' Now using redneck English it would be
"squeal-like-a-pig-suey"
