Or do I only use their GamerTag?
I was playing with a friend yesterday and used his real name. He texted me mid-raid and called me an asshole for breaking some gamer code or something. Was I out of line for calling him a paranoid douchebag? (the paranoid part, he has earned the douchebag for other reasons)
Edit: Now he is telling me that using his name "takes him out of the experience". I told you he was a d-bag.

My friend and I call each other by our real names in raids all the time, this one time when we were doing Crota's End a guy who's gamer tag was "Adam" and my name is Adam so my friend just called him "Other Adam"
-
My ign has my name . Everyone calls me Victor
-
I'm incredibly shy/antisocial in real life so most of my friends come from games. So everyone just calls me Z. I'm okay with that!
-
With people I play with frequently I don't really care, but with people we don't know I try not to use real names. It's confusing for the people who don't know who everybody is, and it's a little uncomfortable. I also use GTs when there are multiple people with the same first name.
-
I always call my friends by name when playing.

Idk really I just play with randoms usually so I'm 99 percent just called going then sometimes room lol

1 ReplyDepends on the level of difficulty of their GT. If your gt is xXx420BlazingKushBeastxXx, I'm just gonna call you Moron
-
Gamertag is kinda easier for everyone else to follow whats happening
-
48 RepliesI strictly go by my gt/username 100% of the time. Even in real life, I go by User30003334. No nicknames, either. If im raiding, i get pissed off when ppl call me user or use. Its User30003334. If you're in trouble, under heavy fire, i will not lift a finger to help you until i hear the 4 in my name. Its Userthreezerozerozerothreethreethreefour mother -blam!-ers.

My gamer tag is my real name. No shame in my game.
-
Use their real name if you know them. Makes it easier then calling a random portion of a GT...
-
If their name is in their GT/PSN I'll say their name

Edited by herwigmark: 3/21/2015 7:23:32 PMIdc. I usually have at least a few randoms. Just so everyone knows who is being referred to I think it's easier to just use their gt. For example mine is public_enemy918 so people usually just call me public.
-
My name is hard to pronounce, so I'm fine with being called my real name
-
2 RepliesI get pissed at my girl when she does the same thing during our BDSM rituals

Edited by Ricarad: 3/21/2015 5:21:37 PMI call my friend by both his real name and his gamer tag. I kind of switch between the two without thinking. The funny part is how different his gamer tag and name are. His name is Harrison and his gamer tag is Benji. He always calls me Richard because it is pretty obvious that is my name. You were not out of line for using your friends real name.
-
If you tell us his gamertag and real name, we can all spam him with his real name and irritate him for you :D But seriously though, I only use gamertags if I know no one knows who I'm talking about. If I just found randoms, I'm not going to say, "Follow Caleb." If everyone knows everyone's name, then absolutely use real names, it is easier and more friendly (and yes I am implying that he is not really a friend and you were justified in saying what you said).

In some "VERY RARE" but still plausible scenarios it can actually cause problems for people beyond being taken out of the immersion. Most folks have heard a story about crazy "Ex's" at some point. For those people I make the exception, but as a question of etiquette in gaming: it is on both parties to communicate their needs before stressful activities. If after, call your friend a baby articulately by sharing the responsibility. Say " hey friend, what way should I address you so that I can say less syllables than bygraptharshammer to get your attention?".

He earns that title dang lol like 20 random friends know my name
-
Wait, is this a thing? Do people really care?
-
I say my friend names when I'm only talking to them but when I'm talking to the whole group I saw follow so and so's Gamertag
-
My buddies and I use our real names all the time, and a lot of times I forget their gamertag. Randoms get confused until we remember they don't know us. No ones gonna track him down because they know his first name. He can relax
-
You should all get GT like me so it doesn't matter, there's no need for all the X's and numbers
-
Sounds pretty over dramatic. I use GTs in case someone else has the same real name, so I don't confuse things.

Edited by : ^ ): 3/21/2015 4:51:52 PMI usually use their gamertag to help others out if they don't know who I'm talking to. Also, use their CURRENT gamertag. I know I changed mine a while back, but people still call me by my old one. I changed mine back because it made it kinda difficult during LFG. xD Otherwise I use real names.
