No best just alternatives. Personally I'll switch between the two in game when completing pve activities. Also switching exotic armour around and bringing in bad juju if it fits.
Don't stick too one, level one at a time though. Find what works best for you in what situation. You can always buy specific exotics to boost what you find best about both or one subclass

What Gazz said, plus just because gear has perks specific to one subclass doesn't mean it won't work well with the other. For example the Voidfang Vestaments give full grenade energy on spawn, pair that with the Sunsinger and Gift of the Sun and that's at least one grenade on hand while another charges, or it could be two off the bat I can't remember.
