Weasel Error Kills Internet.

So I thought I was crazy until a few days ago, when one of my raiding team confirmed that he experiences exactly the same thing. How widespread is this problem? What the -blam!- is even going on? The implications, from my layman's perspective, are equal parts perplexing and unsettling. Here's what's been going on for me since about the time 1.1.1 was released: Pretty much once a day, every day, I get kicked off of the Destiny servers, and am given the so-called 'weasel error'. No big deal, everyone and their mother has gotten this at least once. But what happens immediately afterwards is much more unnerving: 1. The wireless internet connection to my XBOne is completely cut off. I'm disconnected from my home wifi network completely, despite the fact that my wifi signal continues to function perfectly on all other devices. 2. I attempt to reconnect to my wifi signal on my XBOne manually (my wifi network still appears in the list at this point, although the console no longer automatically connects to it, as it normally would). I am prompted to enter the password for my wifi network. 3. I enter the password for my wifi network. Password is rejected. 4. I re-enter the password for my wifi network, being extra careful to use the proper case and punctuation. Password is rejected. 5. Repeat step 4 again several times. Give up. 6. Perform a hard reset my XBOne (hold down power button for several seconds until the console powers off completely, then power up the system again after waiting several seconds). 7. XBOne loads up, automatically connects to my wifi network, everything is exactly the way it should be. 8. Skip to the next day. Repeat the previous 7 steps, ad infinitum. Until I happened to mention this issue during a recent raid, I was pretty sure it was either something wrong with my XBox itself, or it was something having to do with XBox's most recent update, or a number of other things. Honestly, I was guessing. But to hear that some other guy is having the exact same issue, makes me think that others are experiencing the same thing. Seriously, what the actual -blam!-. Somebody smack me with some knowledge, please. UPDATE: Wow there are a lot of you. Wasn't expecting it to be this widespread. Still seems like there's some debate over whether it's an XBox problem, or a Destiny problem (as in, did the Weasel error/Destiny cause the internet to stop working on the XB1, or did the internet stop working on the XB1, causing the Weasel error?)... to which I would say, why haven't I experienced this with any other XB1 online multiplayer games? Why do I get this exact string of issues (loss of XB1 internet connection, followed by it refusing to accept the CORRECT wifi password) consistently, and ONLY when I'm playing Destiny? I mean, it's possible it's the XB1, but it seems like an awful lot of coincidence. Anyway, it sucks regardless. One thing that seems to work for people is foregoing wifi entirely, and 'hard-wiring' the XB1 with an Ethernet cable. If you've found another solution, please let us know! Just For Fun: Here's a list of errors people have reported! Baboon, Weasel, Elk, Centipede, Beaver, Cattle, Coconut, Oyster, Wasp, Beetle, Hare, Canary, Banjo, Chimpanzee, Cockatiel, Hawk, Marionberry, Vulture, Quail, Bass, Sheep, Nightingale, Drum, Caterpillar, Flatworm, Leopard... and it just goes on from there....

    • Happened to me twice today, only unplugging Xbox works. It's been happening since March. No other game had ever done this to my Xbox.

    • I have the same thing happened to me, but I think I know what causes the weasel. I had my Xbox located in a very claustrophobic type area, and would get weaseled constantly. Than one day in frustration, I put a fan facing my Xbox and boom problem solved. Your Xbox is overheating.

    • This exact thing happens to me -- it's incredibly frustrating. The worst thing is I recently upgraded from the 360 to the XBone cos I wanted a better experience playing Destiny. My 360 never completely disconnected itself from the Internet... I'm tempted to go back to it!!! Want my £400 back!!

    • Here's a way that has worked for me, after force-shutting down your console, unplug the power and wait a few minutes. This should power cycle the box and leave it working. It hasn't failed me yet.

    • Had this happen to me last night on PS4. Playing iron banner and bam a wild weasel appears. Caused my router to shut down and then had to sign out of psn and back in.

    • Are you on Virgin Media in the UK by any chance? I think the Xbox One has issues when the router changes frequency at a particular point in the day. Mine sometimes cuts out reliably at 20:15 or 22:00 pretty much on the dot. It was humorous because I used to tell my friends that I knew I'd get kick soon. Only fix is Ethernet cable or just hold down the rest button and reboot the console.

      • Was having the same issue, I couldn't play any 6v6 cruicble nor be in the tower if it filled up, I would get error coded immediately. Bought a new modem because mine was 'out of date' problem solved, now I have no issues!

      • I have contacted bungie with this EXACT issue. I do it when it happens, so I've reported it about 75 times. Their response varies between my internet connection settings must not be optimized for destiny, or its a known Xbox issue, or my personal favorite: "Destiny puts a heavy tax on some routers and it may be exposing a flaw in your router causing it to shut down and restart." Lmao. Both my router and cable modem are the best money can by. Try again. They refuse to admit this is their fault. 100% denial.

        • Happens to me at least once or twice a week :/ The only thing I do is hard resetting the console but even then, that process is really irritating when I'm kicked out from a crucible match. Sometimes I just stop playing when it happens sigh

Hey, here is my 2 cents on the issue: I play destiny on ps4 but I own a xbox1 and a couple of my mates play destiny on that. Sometimes they come over and we play side by side on both platforms and every once in a while we get errors. We've had weasel before but the xbox stayed connected to the network no problem (and the ps4 has never needed a hard reset because of weasel). Now, when I take the xbox to his place and we play there (2 xboxes together), sometimes one or both will get an error and disconnect from network and require a hard reset to work again. We havent played the xbox on my network too much after the latest update from microsoft (about 10 hours of gameplay) l, but it seems like its some hardware compatibility issue to me. Edit: after reading everyones comments, idk what to think. Maybe the xbox1 doesnt deal with network overloads as well as the ps4 and mayne theres more buttfaces on xbox1 flooding the competitions network for them gains. Whichever way, it sucks

        • This happens go me at last once a week. Makes it unplayable, because when it decides to start doing it, it won't stop. Phase 1: Weasel error doesn't just send you to orbit, it makes you log back in from the start screen. Phase 2: 2nd weasel error happens 5-15 minutes after getting logged back on. Phase 3: after the 5th weasel you give up. It's funny you mentioned the wifi issue, that actually explains a lot. I usually use a LAN cable, but got frustrated by recurring weasels and decided to try out my wifi. I couldn't get it to connect. I'm going to try a hard reset and see if that does it.

        • Mine does the same thing. Every time I try to play, I'll get 'contacting destiny servers' then I'll get kicked to orbit with weasel error. Then it'll say 'contacting destiny servers' and sign me completely out. Then I'll get marionberry if I try to sign in. I'll go to test my connection and it won't connect to Internet. Smh. I just turn it off. I'm on ps4 btw

        • Happening to me all day today. Seriously, it destroys my Internet. Like completely. I had to call ISP to get them to come check it out and they have no clue what is going on haha. I log in, I play, get weaseled, Internet completely gets nuked, power cycle router, hard reset xbox one, and nothing. Takes two hours to come back on. It's rough..

Wow, haven't seen a post this big about this problem (though I'd guess a lot of replies are about unrelated issues). There is no fix for this, but it IS now a documented problem as of 2 months ago or so (this started in February). It's an Xbox One-specific problem, and Bungie said they are working with Microsoft to figure out the cause. But it's been a while since the last update and it is not solved. Edit- just saw this was from March, guess it's been bumped up recently. Eithet way, this still happens.

        • When I get the Weasel, I just quit Destiny and restart the Xbox. Don't have to mess around waiting to reconnect then.

        • Maybe move this to the #Help section, get some more notoriety there. From a third party perspective, this seems less a Destiny issue...more an Xbox or your Internet equipment...be it a router or modem. However if you have the ability for a wired connection, it will alleviate around half of the connection issues that Destiny runs into, also a better choice for stability all around
