Weasel Error Kills Internet.

So I thought I was crazy until a few days ago, when one of my raiding team confirmed that he experiences exactly the same thing. How widespread is this problem? What the -blam!- is even going on? The implications, from my layman's perspective, are equal parts perplexing and unsettling. Here's what's been going on for me since about the time 1.1.1 was released: Pretty much once a day, every day, I get kicked off of the Destiny servers, and am given the so-called 'weasel error'. No big deal, everyone and their mother has gotten this at least once. But what happens immediately afterwards is much more unnerving: 1. The wireless internet connection to my XBOne is completely cut off. I'm disconnected from my home wifi network completely, despite the fact that my wifi signal continues to function perfectly on all other devices. 2. I attempt to reconnect to my wifi signal on my XBOne manually (my wifi network still appears in the list at this point, although the console no longer automatically connects to it, as it normally would). I am prompted to enter the password for my wifi network. 3. I enter the password for my wifi network. Password is rejected. 4. I re-enter the password for my wifi network, being extra careful to use the proper case and punctuation. Password is rejected. 5. Repeat step 4 again several times. Give up. 6. Perform a hard reset my XBOne (hold down power button for several seconds until the console powers off completely, then power up the system again after waiting several seconds). 7. XBOne loads up, automatically connects to my wifi network, everything is exactly the way it should be. 8. Skip to the next day. Repeat the previous 7 steps, ad infinitum. Until I happened to mention this issue during a recent raid, I was pretty sure it was either something wrong with my XBox itself, or it was something having to do with XBox's most recent update, or a number of other things. Honestly, I was guessing. But to hear that some other guy is having the exact same issue, makes me think that others are experiencing the same thing. Seriously, what the actual -blam!-. Somebody smack me with some knowledge, please. UPDATE: Wow there are a lot of you. Wasn't expecting it to be this widespread. Still seems like there's some debate over whether it's an XBox problem, or a Destiny problem (as in, did the Weasel error/Destiny cause the internet to stop working on the XB1, or did the internet stop working on the XB1, causing the Weasel error?)... to which I would say, why haven't I experienced this with any other XB1 online multiplayer games? Why do I get this exact string of issues (loss of XB1 internet connection, followed by it refusing to accept the CORRECT wifi password) consistently, and ONLY when I'm playing Destiny? I mean, it's possible it's the XB1, but it seems like an awful lot of coincidence. Anyway, it sucks regardless. One thing that seems to work for people is foregoing wifi entirely, and 'hard-wiring' the XB1 with an Ethernet cable. If you've found another solution, please let us know! Just For Fun: Here's a list of errors people have reported! Baboon, Weasel, Elk, Centipede, Beaver, Cattle, Coconut, Oyster, Wasp, Beetle, Hare, Canary, Banjo, Chimpanzee, Cockatiel, Hawk, Marionberry, Vulture, Quail, Bass, Sheep, Nightingale, Drum, Caterpillar, Flatworm, Leopard... and it just goes on from there....

  • Yup, this happens to me on destiny 1 and 2, on ps4. Always thought it was a router issue, but the fact you guys are having the exact same issues. And it only ever happens in destiny.. So much for hybrid servers, if anything it seems to cause a router crash whenever the game attempts to try and default back to destiny servers.

  • Holy crap... all this time I thought it was my cable company. So today, after picking up Battlefield 1 and dusting it off for about three hours of play I went bak to playing Destiny 2 and lo and behold, the disconnects came back. The only difference is that today I decided to blame Bungie and do some research. That's how I found this thread and I must say I'm somewhat relieved to know it's not just me. It happens almost daily, starting around 12:30 PM, New York time, and lists about three hours. Whenever I play late at night I don't have any issues. But, holy sh1t, am i pissed at Bungie. How can Bungie allow this to go on for so long? Between this and the HDR detection issue on the Xbox One S I have to wonder if bungie is becoming the next Bethesda and just saying F U to its customers rather than deal with issues. If anyone knows if a fix for this issue please let me now. Whenever this happens it takes down our whole internet connection.

This has happened ever since day 1 for my boyfriend and I who play on the same internet. We play on PC and it becomes so frustrating that we just can't even play the game, every 5 mins or so we get a complete internet disconnect. We even get disconnected from Discord voice chat, etc. So frustrating when we're trying to enjoy pvp games and/or trying to get challenges done. Bungie, please fix!!!

  • It's not an Xbox problem. It's definitely something on Bungie's end. I've had this problem since launch of Destiny 1. I currently own Destiny 2 on both XB1 (to play with friends) and my PC (for sweet framerate and graphics), and have still had this problem on both platforms. This has ONLY ever happened on Destiny and not a single other game I've ever played. Multiplayer or single player. And it doesn't just kick me off the game, it shuts down my entire router. Which shuts off Wi-Fi for every device I have connected. It's like the game DDOS's it's own players... This has seriously pissed me off before. Me and my friends have been mid raid and got weaseled multiple times, only to have one or more of us get kicked off our internet, unable to reconnect for (at most we've experienced) up to 24 hours. This is an unusual problem that I KNOW a huge chunk of the player base experiences. Bungie needs to fix whatever causes it.

  • This seems to be happening in Destiny 2 now as well, seeing my internet on PC die and requires a hard reset to get it back. No issues with other games and everything else continues to work fine from Netflix to other online games being played in the house at the same time.

    • this is part of the reason I ended up quitting playing Destiny in the first place now the same thing is happening on destiny2 kicks me off I either have to reset my router for my Xbox to see my internet or I have to wait till the next day really it's ridiculous when you pay for a game you enjoy playing with your friends and it kicks you off by the time you get back on you can't play with your friends never said it had something to do with The Crucible cheating all I know is it happened before the competitive Crucible matches and it's happened since Destiny one please fix it Bungie

    • Happens to me all the time and it doesnt just disconnect me. It completely shuts down my internet. As in all the blinking lights on my modem go off and it takes like half an hour. Literally has only ever happened on Destiny.

    • It's destiny. XBOX never had that problem unless it's with destiny.

    • Yes. Weasel on XB1 causes me to have to hard reboot. These network coders are the best.

Never experienced any of these things cause I play on Ps3 with Sony. I have never even heard of a weasel or canary or any other kind of animal name connection error. Only thing I can say to do is contact Bungie's tech support or repeat steps 1-8 for the rest of your life.

Many people, including myself, say that it is usually not destiny itself. Where in fact, it is the issue of other players DDoS'ing you. Weasel error code, as far as I can remember, meant that your connection to the servers and/or XBL was interrupted. Well, in Iron Banner you usually end up with around 5 weasel codes from 4 hours of play. Iron Banner being a highly competitive game mode, clearly people would turn to cheating. To support all of these views that I've heard and read, and my own, there have been numerous websites found to include a free program to allow these players to DDoS. There have been many reports in the forums of being DDoS'ed in Trials, when they viewed the enemy team, it was a clan inwhich had a link to a website like the ones I descriped. It seems to die down once the Iron Banner is done and then goes wild again when it reappears. While playing Iron Banner today, my friend got hit with Weasel a few times. I just did three matches and on the third got Weasel'd. So, if you get Weasel'd in Trials or Iron Banner, you should know that 90%+ of the time, you pissed someone off with your skill. Good luck to you all and happy hive hunting!
