Thank you

Halflife2? No contest ATI . The game was designed around their cards. They have a massive performance advantage over the equivelent nvidia rival whatever end of the market you go for.
-
ATI used to e better. THe newer nVidia cards are better tho...
-
ATi is far superior to nVidia. The fact that nVidia pays developers to put "The Way it's Meant to Be Played" should tell you a lot right there, especially when ATi beats nVidia in benchmarks in about... oh, everything but Doom 3. Get 2 Asus AX800XT cards on one of those new dual-slot Asus motherboards for the best graphics available to civilians.
-
Whatever you get, buy from newegg. Fast shipping and good prices.
-
Does the motherboard need to be good too?
-
ATI x850. Mmmm. Make sure you fight the machine and get a motherboard with a VIA chipset.
-
It's just like Ford Vs. Chevy, neither is any much better than the other. It's just your opinion.
-
Asuming your in the USA or canada. The prices are different in Australia. But i think you all clearly state that ATi ownz all other cards. I've about $450AU to spend and I'm now loking at the cards and motherboards on the net. thanks

My 850XT kills any nVidia card. At any rate, ATi is pretty darn good at OpenGL, while nVidia slacks in the Direct3D department. If you want more opinions, take this to the Maw forums. Pricewise, I'd get a Chaintech board. I have one and it was $129, runs awesome with my card. My card is made by Sapphire. Sapphire, Gigabyte, and Asus make awesome ATi video cards, usually better than the ATi version.

ATi Radeon 9800. Works like a charm for HL2.
-
ATi has done fine for me...

ATi is my drug of choice. They're Canadian and they don't resort to underhanded deals with software companies (I personally don't like booting up UT2K4 on my Radeon X800XT to see that nvidia is "the way it's meant to be played" every time). [Semi] Joking aside, it all depends. If you only want the absolute best of the last generation, the Radeon 9800pro or xt is the way to go, and now it's quite cheap. It's correct that nvidia's cards generally do openGL better while ati cards are best for DX, but I can tell you the Radeons are no slouch in openGL games like Doom3 (currently playing at 1280x1024 ULTRA quality getting average 55fps). Right now the top of the line NVIDIA's ARE fater and more feature packed. SLI, ps3.0, you name it. Current Ati cards only use ps2.0b, but the x800 and up introduces 3Dc, a cool normal map compression technology. It probably won't mean much to anyone right now, as Far Cry is really the only game that supports this stuff. However, you're interested in HL2 performance. Get a Radeon. End of line.

I really want it for Halfl-life 2. And other work and games.
-
Halflife2 or doom3? heard a few bad things about glitching with nvidia cards but they have a large performance advantage with games on the doom3 engine visaversa with ati and halflife2s source engine. I know all this because i bought a slimline pc with a 5200 gpu in it that is -blam!-e and wanted to upgrade. If money is no object an nviida 6800 or ati 850 is the way to go. Assuming you don't have infinet funds 5900xt or 9800 would be the way to go. If anyone knows of a decent graphics card that will fit inside a slimline tower please let me know.

ATi is the choice then. I just need a good but cheap motherboard. I heard Gigabyte is good. See ya and thanks Ben
Posted by: KayJay I dont exactly want them for games but i need them for games and work. Both would be be great.
What programs do you need it for? ATI is better for some programs, while nVidia is better for others. If I recall correctly, ATI does better for Directx-based programs, and nVidia does OpenGL better?
-
Oh and I forgot to metion I'm in Australia. hehe.
-
ATi, for sure. Their low-end cards are decent enough to play games.

I like Nvidia but i gota tell you ATi has been taking the lead lately.

Hmmmm.................there alot of games that demand nvidia cards......that's all I have to say.
