What are the benefits of having multiple characters/classes?
Is it to use the armor from drops/chests that cannot be equipped on your current character?
Is it because you've hit the max level on your current character?
I'm considering making a new character. I've been putting it off for awhile because I've been busy and I like focusing my effort on my warlock.
That being said, what character do you recommend? Hunter or Titan?
Edit: thanks for all the replies! Didn't expect so many of you all to post!!

It's all about versatility, having one of each character makes it where you're literally prepared for any situation that arises. Things that the other 2 classes may not do as well in.

I had all 3 before, deleted my Titan, made a 2nd Hunter and then felt bad cuz I wasn't experiencing all that Destiny had to offer. Plus I want the trophy for having all three class maxed out and the Grimoire score as well. So I deleted my second Hunter and made a Titan...again lol. Anyways, for me it kinda boils down to experience. The game plays slightly different for each class and it can be fun experiencing each activity in different ways and using different strategies.

Everyone else has covered the why pretty well. I only have a titan and hunter. I just started the titan a few weeks and it's my favorite...but maybe that's just the novelty of new...

Variety.

Less boredom.

Benefits of multiple characters: More nightfall/raids/weeklies = more chances at rewards i.e. exotics, raid gear blah blah blah Benefits of multiple character of the same class: Run raids with same armour to get more loot, able to do hard mode sooner Benefits of multiple character of different class: Experience what every class has to offer and figure out which one best suit your playing style. Master of all trades and learn each role so you can lead and teach every position.

Sometimes people need a Warlock in the raid. Sometimes people want a Hunter. Sometimes they need a Titan. Since I have all 3 at level 32, I am able to be more versatile for my raid group.
-
I started a Hunter after my warlock because I wanted a different playing strategy. The nice thing was that I had found enough Hunter legendary items that as soon as I got to lvl 20 and put on the gear, I was lvl 25 already.
-
They all play differently so it keeps it fresh. I had all 3, but didn't like the hunter. Still enjoy both the others.
-
Benefits. I can run the weekly/nightfall/raids multiple times. Cons...more grinding

Multiple Characters = 1) different ways to play (if you have different characters of different classes) 2) multiple RNG drops from Nightfall/Weekly/Raids 3) You CAN upgrade weapons faster (run bounties on one character, turn them in, swap weapon, run bounties on the next, turn them in, etc.) ... personally I rarely have enough time in a day to do this, but some people do. :) 4) You COULD (and some people do) level up multiple of the same class. That lets you swap armor to power level that the same as weapons, and lets you focus on one class (some people do this at the beginning to get one character to 32, then roll up another character class in the third spot, some people do 3 of 1 class swapping around armor and weapons as they go, every way you can think of, some people do it). Personally, I started with the Titan. When I rolled up a Warlock and Hunter I already had enough armor saved up from Legendary Engrams and Exotics to get them both to 30 pretty soon after I got them to 20. For me its fun to play other ways, although I prefer Warlock and Titan to Hunter (but lots of people love Hunter, and it is growing on me).

You're ready for every situation

Walk around in someone else's shoes for bit, broaden your horizons, OP.

I'm a completionist... I have 1000 gamerscore. 2730 grimoire(Mostly missing PVP) Every exotic(on xbox) Including weapons and armour. multiple sets of CE raid gear. All made possible by 3 classes.
-
Something different. I would have quit a long time ago if I only had one class
-
Multiple classes = more drops with nightfall and raids per week, upgrade your weapons quicker because you can run bounties twice or three times a day and you can bring different skills to every raid team depending on what character you want to play with...I'm sure other people have more reasons
-
I'd say the benefit is the fact that there would be some variety vs just replaying everything using the same class over and over. Doing every bounty/raid/etc 3 times can get boring, and I think it would be more so if you were always the same class. Also, Grimoire score.

I have one of each. The fastest way to level all three is to make them the same, however, the game is way more interesting IMO with different characters. The armor benefits you referred to are valid, but if your goal is to level quickly, make some more locks. My first character was a warlock, and I now have a 31 lock, a 28/29 titan, and a 30 hunter. If you think you want to swordbear, obviously go hunter, as well as if you generally enjoy faster-paced gameplay. If you want to be supportive/have a useless (but fun) superman ability, go titan. For PVP hunter is the only way to go btw
