Isn't it supposed to be Bekenstein's Bound? I know that Bekenstein's bound suggests something similar to what they're saying. However, when speaking of exceeding theoretical maximum space on a "computer" of sorts, mixing Bekenstein's bound and Bremermann's limit just seems like a poor bit of research on Bungie's part. I hadn't noticed this the first time through the game, but I was just pushing out some incomplete story missions on my newbie level 16 Hunter and I thought it sounded wrong. I could very well be blowing it slightly out of proportion, but I honestly believe that it should be "Bekenstein's Bound", or at least not "Bekenstein's limit".
Anybody here actually understand computer science? Any thoughts? I'm expecting a lot of "I'm an engineer" kind of people right now... You know who you are. Just... don't.
Edit:
If they're talking about Bekenstein's bound, they should have said "bound". I never heard anybody call it Bekenstein's limit, as that would create confusion with a similar theory that has to do with computer science specifically. In any case, it's a definite oversight.
Edit2: Shit. Sorry, guys. I accidentally put "Bremermann's limit" in the first line instead of Bekenstein's Bound. Mistake on my part. Bremermann's limit was only supposed to show up in the third sentence. My apologies. Sorry for the mix-up. Funny how I pointed out their mistake and made one of my own. Shit.

It's not Bungie. It's Ghosts fragmented data banks. He's dumb.

Are you English?

15 RepliesI love it when games get their facts correct. I hate it when they don't. You're not being too serious. I think it's good to catch these kind of oversights. My biggest oversight is every weapon design. The mags don't go into the weapon. Scout rifle mags make nonsense. Bolt assembly's don't line up to barrels. Hand cannon cylinders aren't big enough for the bullets and hardly line up with the barrel... Etc etc...

I like science fiction as much as the next guy, but when it's based on theoretical physics and chemistry. Theoretically though, it is impossible to break the beckenstein bound.

8 RepliesEdited by chrisw41g: 3/12/2015 6:27:47 AMNo, they got it right.. They were talking about information.. In physics, the Bekenstein bound is an upper limit on the entropy S, or information I, that can be contained within a given finite region of space which has a finite amount of energy—or conversely, the maximum amount of information required to perfectly describe a given physical system down to the quantum level. Bremmermans is about computational limits.. Bremermann's Limit, named after Hans-Joachim Bremermann, is the maximum computational speed of a self-contained system in the material universe. It is derived from Einstein's mass-energy equivalency and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, and isc2/h ≈ 1.36 × 1050 bits per second per kilogram. This value is important when designing cryptographic algorithms, as it can be used to determine the minimum size of encryption keys or hash values required to create an algorithm that could never be cracked by a brute-force search.

It means they have made a "computer" with infinite storage

Its called artistic licence. It is science FICTION after all.

Maybe they're using time lord technology.. Fitting something bigger into something smaller.? Lulz

4 RepliesMy thing with this part is ur ghost is downloading all that data yet he's so surprised by the fact they broke the "limit" . Sp if it's more data then we can store how are you downloading it????
-
I always thought they got mixed up as it should have been Bremermanns limit which defines the maximum computational limit of any given machine, which in turn is governed by the Bekenstein bound which determines entropy, or how much info can be stored in a given space due to available energy, size etc.

A Bound could be considered a kind of limit. Now i'm not a mathematician and/or physicist, but according to the Wiki: "In physics, the Bekenstein bound is an upper limit on the entropy S, or information I, that can be contained within a given finite region of space which has a finite amount of energy"

And yet all they do is walk into my bullets and growl. Love how the hive are these intelligent creatured with slip space ships and crazy wizard rituals but they just look like stupid beasts running towards their deaths

1 ReplyIt probably just sounds better. I mean really, try comparing them out loud "They've broken the Bekenstein limit." and "They've broken Bekenstein's Bound." The latter makes it sound like the Hive knocked over a vase or something.

I call Bs the bekenstein limit really?

4 RepliesEdited by The Mannikin: 3/12/2015 7:17:58 AMHonestly wording is very important, clwarly as you're showing, so I'm going to throw this out there, Maybe they changed it purposely so the masses would understand better, most people have never heard of bekenstein or whoever you're talking about and if they have they don't remember much. So if you say bound they won't understand what it means, but limit on the other hand is a clear meaning, so even if they don't know who bekenstein is, they know limit is max, and bekenstein sounds like Einstein so it's probably a smart scientists of sorts, so one could assume it has something to do with learning capacity. Language is very important when it comes to science fiction, but being politically correct is not. Same reason people ignore the fact that we as guardians are seemingly destroying different races without cause or explanation, but because the Language of the story making us automatically the good guys and everything we kill the bad guys, it's all good. Just like how red signifies enemies, so online games often use red in some way shape or form to represent the opposing team. It's all subjective, don't take it to heart. Excellent catch though. I would've never known that was an actual reference to a real scientific term. I know 1 would like to think it was a mistake but they have teams of people much more capable of googling shit from their fiber optic 100mbs company computer then the average forum poster, chances are some director of sorts changed the wording to be more universally understandable. A 14 year old is very unlikely to know Wtf a bekenstein bound is.

7 RepliesHere's one of bungies oversights also... Shrine of oryx, at the very start as you walk down... Ghost says 'fallen activity, heavier than normal something's got them worked up...' 2 seconds later 'Fallen?? They're invading the hellmouth!!' All of a sudden he's surprised... We are just going to overlook this mistake? He was clearly meant to say hive the first time
