Everything You Need To Know About Destiny

I wrote this for all the new members to Bungie.net or old members who have left so that they can catch up easily. I planned to post this immediately after bungie.next was released, however there were some complications and I was unable to post it. [DISCLAIMER: PLEASE REPLY TO THE LAST POST MADE BY ME IF YOU WISH TO POST IN THIS THREAD] I will order the posts so that you will be able to read them properly. Should more people post in this thread it might become impossible to organise it and I will have to move this to a Google Doc. So please follow my instructions above. I will continue to update it as more information is released. Please bear with me as this is my first time writing something so extensive and I am still trying to understand how to use the new site. Feedback and criticism of certain parts is very very welcome. Pour yourself a cup of coffee and fasten your seatbelts. Without further ado... Ladies and gentlemen, I present you Everything You Need To Know About Destiny: ************************************************************* Part One July 20, 2009 The “Destiny” trademark is registered by Podophobia Entertainment, Inc. It is described as “Computer game software; Computer game software downloadable from a global computer network; Video game software; Virtual reality game software”. [1] http://www.trademarkia.com/destiny-77784606.html July 30, 2009 The trademark for “Be Brave” is registered, again by Podophobia Entertainment, Inc. The company consists of only two Bungie employees – Martin O’Donnell and Harold Ryan. This led to fan speculation that it is a shell company by Bungie to subtly acquire intellectual property holdings. This was seemingly confirmed when both trademarks were transferred from Podophobia Entertainment to Bungie. [2] http://www.trademarkia.com/be-brave-77793101.html April 29, 2010 Bungie announces that it is entering a 10-year publishing agreement with publisher Activision Blizzard. Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new intellectual property on multiple platforms and devices. Bungie remains an independent company and will continue to own their intellectual property. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed. “Today, we’re poised to open a new chapter in Bungie’s history—one that begins with a partnership between Bungie and Activision and ends where we always knew it would, with World Domination. Our Next Big Thing now has a concrete path, leading from our studio to the platforms of our choosing. The business formalities are behind us. Our Constitution remains unchanged. We are still Bungie, still independent, and now we are free to bring our stories to an ever bigger audience. [3] http://www.bungie.net/news/content.aspx?cid=25920 July 27, 2010 Bungie acquires the following trademarks at the US copyright office: Seven Seraphs, Osiris, New Monarchy and Dead Orbit. Seven domains were registered with three out of four of these copyrights: >DeadOrbit.com >DeadOrbit.net >DeadOrbit.org >NewMonarchy.org >SevenSeraphs.com >SevenSeraphs.net >SevenSeraphs.org http://gematsu.com/2011/01/bungie-copyrights-possible-names-for-new-game [4] February 17, 2011 An anonymous source claiming to have been let go by Bungie contacts Kotaku, and “suggested their latest game – named ‘Destiny’ and codenamed ‘Tiger’ – mixes FPS elements into an MMO with a Sci-Fi setting”. http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/02/breaking-bungies-destiny-is-an-fps-mmo-claims-fired-contractor/ [5] March 3, 2011 At GDC 2011, the lead network engineer at Bungie, David Aldridge, reveals that Bungie’s next game will be a “massively multiplayer action game”, while denying rumours that the game would be “WOW in space”. [6] http://www.edge-online.com/features/gdc-2011-bungie-working-mmog/ Later, Bungie clarifies in a Weekly Update that Mr Aldridge was merely joking, “playfully riffing off the recent rumors”. [7] http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=30859 12 April 2011 Bungie forum member SonicJohn creates a thread and a 3D model of the map in the Bungie.net background. http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=68213981 [8] 21 May, 2011 A judge in the Los Angeles Superior Court orders that the Bungie-Activision contract be unsealed. From the LA Times “The 27-page agreement calls for Bungie to develop four "sci-fantasy, action shooter games," code-named "Destiny," released every other year, beginning in the fall of 2013. Bungie also agreed to put out four downloadable expansion packs code-named "Comet," every other year beginning in the fall of 2014. Activision has never disclosed release plans for Bungie's titles. The first Destiny game will initially only be available on Microsoft's Xbox 360 consoles, as well as its potential successor, which the contract refers to as the "Xbox 720." Later games would be made for Xbox consoles as well as Sony Corp.'s expected successor to the PlayStation 3, and on personal computers. Bungie would be entitled to royalties ranging from 20% to 35% of "operating income," the amount left over after Activision deducts its costs, including development, production and marketing expenses. Under the contract, which may have been amended since it went into effect on April 16, 2010, Activision would also pay Bungie $2.5 million a year in bonuses between 2010 and 2013 if the Bellevue, Wash., studio meets certain quality and budget milestones. Bungie gets another $2.5 million if the first Destiny game achieves a score of 90 or better out of 100 on GameRankings.com, a site that summarizes reviews by game critics. The contract also reveals for the first time that Bungie is working on a potential successor to its Marathon game, which became a cult hit after it was published in 1994 for the Apple Mac. The document refers to Bungie's right to devote no more than 5% of its staff to develop an action-shooter prototype dubbed Marathon while Bungie remains under contract with Activision.” Some tidbits from the contract: >There are four games planned >The release target for Destiny #1 is Fall 2013 >The release targets for Destiny #2, #3 and #4 are 2015, 2017 and 2019 respectively >Major expansion code name is Comet >There are four planned major expansions >The release targets for Comet #2, #3 and #4 are 2016, 2018 and 2020 respectively >Comet may be released as DLC or retail discs >The genre for the game is sci-fi, action-shooter, which is massively-multiplayer-style >The target ESRB rating is Teen Destiny 1 is planned to be released as an Xbox 360 exclusive and its successor, the Xbox 720 a year later. Versions of games on other systems will follow one year after release on the Xbox 360 – Xbox successor, PS3 successor and PC versions of the Destiny games are targeted to be released in 2015, 2017 and 2019. http://documents.latimes.com/bungie-activision-contract/ http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/21/entertainment/la-et-ct-bungie-activision-contract-20120521 http://misriahsolutions.com/articles/waiting-for-destiny/2/ [9] 7 July 2011 A new item, a “Bag O Swag” goes on sale on the Bungie Store. Seven bags contain one golden ticket each for a lucky fan. On the One Of Seven contest page on Bungie.net: “Bungie is having a One of Seven promotion. Each of the seven tickets entitles you to something extraordinary. On July 7th, 2012 and not a moment before, visit http://www.bungie.net/oneofseven to receive further instructions. Your ticket and the verification code contained therein are personal, one-of-a-kind, and not transferable. Do not reveal the hidden code beneath the scratch off before Bungie Day 2012. Do not share your ticket or code with anyone else. Failure to follow these instructions will render your ticket, and the promise that it holds, null and void.” http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?cid=31904 [10] 27 August, 2011 Marty O’Donnell says “Be Brave” in his closing comments at Bungie’s panel at the Penny Arcade Expo, leading to speculation that this might be Bungie’s new tagline for “Destiny”. This lesson is worth learning again and again. Forever. Your voice moves as whispers, murmurs and urges inside larger winds. Only the trusted few can absorb what is necessary. Wise and sly and perfect, your instructions drop, leaving nothing but the hard sweet rime of enlightenment. The path is set. Your voice is unleashed. Except now it is gone... And maybe it never was. Part Two 7 July 2012 Beatle Reveal On Bungie Day, Bungie employee Marty tweets a photo of himself and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney. [12] https://twitter.com/MartyTheElder/status/221607787359244290 Later, McCartney confirms this, saying he is “really excited to be working on writing music with @bungie, the studio that made Halo”. [13] https://twitter.com/PaulMcCartney/status/221604926042816512 Bungie employee urk confirms on NeoGAF that the game’s score will be orchestral. He replied to another user’s comment: “I wouldn't worry about it. They're not working on an album of singles. The game's score will be orchestral. I've listened to a few early pieces from the crawl space below Marty's office, and I think it's safe to say you'll really dig this stuff. I'm a big fan of Paul and Marty and Mike's work, and when I heard the latest my body went all tingly and I couldn't stop smiling for a few days. :)” Urk also said that “Paul contacted Marty because he heard his work and wanted to collaborate with him.” [13] http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=39604326#post39604326 Bungie.net frontpage The front page of Bungie.net is updated with an image of a grey septagon hovering over the planet Earth. It links to a new article written by Community Manager DeeJ, who promises exciting things for the future of the Seventh Column. “Our towering aspirations cannot be tackled by our seasoned ranks alone. The Bungie team has been infused with new blood in the form of fresh faces that we enticed from some of the brightest and most successful corners of the entertainment industry – as well as from the Bungie community itself. The walls of our new studio are bursting at the seams with new faces, their monitors exploding with technical and artistic talent that makes us weep when we gaze into the screens. And we're still on the hunt for more kick-ass developers to aid us in our quest for world domination. We're thinking we might be closer than we've ever been before.” [14] http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=32142 Several new forum avatars and profile backgrounds are added. New apparel can also be found in the Bungie Store. Geomancy A set of seven symbols was included at the end of the Bungie Day article. [15] Each of them was made available for use as new user avatars. http://halo.bungie.net/images/News/Inline12/BungieDay2012/particles.png The Bungie Community forum immediately got to work on decoding the puzzle. It was discovered that they are Geomantic symbols. Forum member InvincibleForce has an explanation for this I find quite satisfactory: “Each figure has 4 lines, each line having one or two dots. Each line represents an element. If the line has one point, the line's element is active. If it has two, it is passive. The Figures names in order: 1)Via 2)Conjunctio 3)Amissio 4)Fortuna Minor 5)Rubeus 6)Laetitia 7)Carcer Description of each figure in order: 1)Via - "The Way" - Road or path. - It can mean change. - Considered bad unless concerning traveling. - Good with concerns of roads, travels, or journeys. 2)Conjunctio - "The Conjuction" - Resembles a crossroad or joining of two figures. - Can mean joining of forces (alliance?) - good with joining or recovering things, especially relationships. 3)Amissio - "Loss" - the meaning is bad or negative - It often represents something outside of one's grasp. 4)Fortuna Minor - "The Lesser Fortune" - It indicates a weakly positive outcome in nearly all questions. - It represents situations that can be resolved quickly and do not need to be sustained. - It is a figure of change and instability. 5)Rubeus - "Red" - This basically means evil. - It represents passion, deception, and violence. 6)Laetitia - "Joy" - Represents potential joy. - Could represent construction. 7)Carcer - "The Prison" - Represents a delay or a setback. - Also can represent being bound to something, being immobile, strength, or stability. The Meaning: When you put all the translations in order and use the meanings of the figures to add or change words you get,"The way to stay together is lost. The one with the upper hand is evil, but there is still hope for good." This could be translated into different meanings though. For example,"But there is still hope for good" can also be seen as,"good has been set back." The first sentence is by far the hardest to translate because Via can mean "the way" or "the change" and Conjunctio can mean "connection" or an alliance. My personal speculation: This could be a hint to the story line in the Destiny universe.Post your own speculations if you want! :D” [16] http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=73326493 However it was pointed out by another forum member shadow 2648 that the riddle is not solvable. http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=73326205 One of Seven The Bungie Community found a link to a page on Bungie.net for One of Seven winners to enter their verification code. Later they found a link to a video of Marty O’Donnell rock climbing, and revealed that the prize for the contest was a tour of Bungie. This video was meant to be shown to One of Seven winners who entered their verification codes. [17] http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=73317159 Apparel Clues The descriptions for the new shirts seem to give hints about their supposed factions: Bungie Day Red (New Monarchy Logo) For Bungie Day, we are giving you the shirts off our backs. Adorn yourself with a mysterious icon fit for a king. [18] http://www.bungiestore.com/Bungie-Day-Red-Mens/M/B008I8GFV4.htm Bungie Day White (Dead Orbit Logo) You can be a dead ringer for a Bungie employee. Decorate your chest with this mysterious crest and watch the questions fly. [19] http://www.bungiestore.com/Bungie-Day-Red-Mens/M/B008I8GFV4.htm Bungie Day Blue (Future War Cult Logo) Have you seen us wearing shirts like these? Drape yourself in an enigma from our future release. [20] http://www.bungiestore.com/Bungie-Day-Blue-Mens/M/B008I8GM8A.htm Faction Names Three out of five of the faction names have been “matched” by the Community to the trademarks acquired by Bungie earlier in 2010. The other two names – Future War Cult and Osiris are placeholders by the Community.

Part Three September 17, 2012 In the thread with the 3D model of the supposed Destiny map, user Motarius1 discovers that the map is actually one of Puerto Princesa, an city in the Philippines. [21] http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=68213981&postRepeater1-p=8#74826412 November 6, 2012 A blog post on Demonware’s internal blog on Bungie is removed, but it is already cached by google, making it publicly accessible. [22] The post describes a visit to Bungie’s headquarters by Demonware employees, where they were shown details on Destiny. The author states: “This is not a dedicated server game, but there is some simulation and coordination running in their server infrastructure. The game was up and down a lot, playing in a team of 3 we did manage to experience entering a zone to find other players already taking on the bad guys, it's cooperative so we helped out (mostly [name removed], I just died) before both groups went their separate ways. Which is a pretty cool experience, making you feel you are part of a much larger populated world. …At the end of the day I was excited about the game, I like the feel of being in a large world with different destinations and the interactions along the way. It actually brought back a sense of exploration I recall from playing [Elite] many years ago, although there was no opportunity to shoot aliens in the face in Elite. I'm not fully sold on the appeal of being able to change the colour of a weapon, but I guess it works in China, and customization and individual identity is a big theme for the game.” A theatre presentation also included “a live scene walk through demonstrating lots of atmospherics, huge amounts of trees and foliage (SpeedTree), particle effects, dynamic lighting and dynamic time of day ending in a sun set" as the highlight of that portion of the day. The author concludes that Destiny is “still quite like Halo, there is a lot of work to be done.” http://kotaku.com/5958165/a-big-leaked-update-about-the-next-game-from-the-halo+makers-at-bungie-plus-more-gaming-secrets November 27, 2012 Gaming news site IGN is provided leaked materials by a reader. [23] It contains story details and concept art of Destiny. Bungie confirmed to IGN that the document had been prepared by an advertising agency. http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/28/destiny-story-details-concept-art-leaked The Story Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age. A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector. Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City. We are young ‘knights’ tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and – eventually – overcoming it.” Elsewhere in the document, the massive alien ship is referred to as “the Traveler.” Gameplay Aspects Destiny is described as “fun and accessible to all”, implying that Bungie aims to make their game accessible to multiple demographics. Bungie aims at making the Destiny Universe as deep, tangible and relatable as that of the Star Wars franchise”. The gameplay is also described as “social at its core”. Concept Art The document provides several concept art images. Some forum members on NeoGAF and the Bungie Community forum pointed out that some of the images were based on, or were near-identical to previous artwork, such as the cancelled game Command & Conquer Tiberium. Note that none of these are official, and likely to have been drawn by artists outside Bungie. They are meant to give a rough idea on what certain aspects of the game look like. Bungie Response IGN reached out to Bungie with this information and received a reply: “We’re not quite ready to take the wraps off our next universe, but in light of recent events we thought we’d give fans something a little more official over at Bungie.net. Feel free to drop by and say hello! There’s much more to come.” Shortly after, Bungie posted an article “Well, that just happened… again.” on the Bungie.net with an official piece of concept art of several soldiers with a tank in a snowy environment. [24] http://www.bungie.net/news/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=32235 10 Jan 2013 The site layout of bungie.net goes through a complete overhaul. The new backgrounds feature the Puerto Princesa maps. 11 Feb 2013 Bungie Media Day begins. Various gaming journalism websites are invited to presumably view Destiny. They are under an embargo until Destiny's reveal. The tiger is a reference to a tiger in a Community Theater video previously released by Bungie on Youtube. https://twitter.com/Bungie/status/301767362619789312/photo/1 12 Feb 2013 Reveal date revealed IGN tweets that the reveal date of Destiny will be on 17 February. They were presumably attending Bungie Media Day. https://twitter.com/IGN/status/301454329393598464 The ARG Begins Forum account Alpha Lupi creates a thread titled Something is falling towards you. Or are you falling towards it? at 4.10pm PST. [25] http://www.bungie.net/en-us/Forum/Post?id=59798057 The original post contains a link titled 7 - Only the trusted few. [26] http://alphalupi.bungie.net/?day=0 Users are linked to a page where they are prompted Begin by aligning the day’s pattern to the light. In order to solve the puzzle users must use a combination. The original pattern is the third one in the particles.png Geomancy symbols image posted during Bungie Day 2012. The answer to the puzzle corresponds with the Geomantic Figure for Day on Monday Populus. It is assumed by many that the puzzle will change with each day leading to the reveal of Destiny on Monday, 18 February 2013. A chart was created by Forum User FoMan123 to consolidate the geomancy information.[27] http://oi46.tinypic.com/11r4ok0.jpg Answer Page The one on the left is an image of the Latin translation of Almagest with some text overlaid on top. [28] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Almagest_1.jpeg Under it are the words [Note: (x, y) visibility limited. (u, v) analysis might prove useful.] It links to an instruction page. The image gets clearer as more users refresh the page every five minutes. The image on the right are white dots. The more people who are looking at the page and refreshing every 5 minutes, the more white dots appear. The text at the bottom of the left image links to an Instructions Page. [29] http://alphalupi.bungie.net/Instructions.aspx]
Our sky is filled with unseen signals. Radio-frequency emissions pulse and flit and dance all around us. Yet even a singing patch of sky can be observed, and transformed into a range of frequencies. Can you hear it? No, not yet. It has not yet arrived. But together we can receive its call. Imagine combining the observations of thousands across the globe on an object meandering through the heavens. The resulting array would be quite large. Quite powerful. This is your task. Alone it will not be enough. Coordination and timing is needed. Observations must be made simultaneously. Your window will be small. Five minutes at most. But windows may be reopened. And the distance between observer pairs will be key. There will always be limitations in clarity, so the results must be archived for study. Highly technical observers may be required. Detailed frequency analysis is recommended. Everything that belongs to us will be ours, but only if we create the capacity to receive it.
