That doesn't seem like that bad of an idea. I'm not thrilled with the idea of a new currency though, since there are already underutilized currencies in the game (mote of light, vanguard commendations, crucible commendations). How about they use something like that. 20 vanguard commendations and they replace ascendant shards, ascendant energies and engrams from the loot table.
