DISCLAIMER: I am in no way saying that Thunderlord is better than Gjallarhorn or vice versa. I am merely analyzing their strengths and presenting what I have found in my testing. I am also only comparing their damage potential in terms of PvE, not PvP.
Thunderlord and Gjallarhorn are easily two of the most powerful and coveted exotic weapons. I myself don't have Gjally, but I've had Thunderlord for a while and it's become my favorite weapon as of now. I actually read a post on the forums somewhere a while ago stating that Thunderlord actually had a higher sustained damage per second than Gjallarhorn, which piqued my curiosity. So, with the help of a friend with Gjally, I decided to test that.
First, let's look at Gjallarhorn. For damage tests, I decided to look at each weapons' damage values in terms of Tier 1 enemies. On impact, a Gjallarhorn rocket deals 4,399 damage to Tier 1 enemies, with the Wolpack Rounds dealing the damage of an additional rocket given they all hit the intended target. That's a possible 8,798 total cumulative damage with one rocket, and 17,596 cumulative damage in one mag. Spread across 7 rockets, that totals to 61,586 total cumulative damage.
Now let's look at Thunderlord. To Tier 1 enemies, Thunderlord deals 340 damage per shot to the body, and 849 damage on crits. In a 38 round mag, that amounts to 12,920 cumulative damage, if all shots hit the body, and in a 60 round mag (with Field Scout), that's 20,400 cumulative damage. Over 181 rounds in total with Field Scout and a Heavy Ammo armor buff, the total cumulative damage amounts to 61,540, if every shot hits the body. If, theoretically, all shots hit crits, that's 32,262 damage in a 38 round mag, 50,940 damage in a 60 round mag, and 153,669 damage over all 181 total rounds.
The Verdict: While Gjallarhorn is capable of dealing more damage in short, powerful bursts, Thunderlord does have an overall higher sustained DPS than Gjally, and has a higher overall damage potential in the long run. Again, I'm not saying one is better than the other. I'm just comparing the two in terms of raw damage.
Tell me what you think, fellow Guardians.

Sorry but nothing compares to ghally.

Cough Dragonsbreath Cough

Why would I need a thunderlord when I have a arc jolder's hammer with fieldscout and surplus?
-
You can't just 2x the Gjally damage-each WP round does an amount and there are 12-15 of them. Calling it "like being hit with two rockets" is hyperbole, not an exact calculation.
-
They each have their places. Vs bosses and majors I'd take a rocket, but for non-majors I'll go with a machine gun. Once soloed left and middle conflux in VoG at the same time using Thunderlord and Ruin Wings. I had more heavy ammo than I could use. @_@

1 ReplyEvery hmg does more dps than every rocket launcher.

2 RepliesEdited by Squibsallotl: 6/24/2015 5:59:30 AMUseful info about the possible total damage of TL Vs Ghorn over the course of a full mag. But my question is, how long did each weapon take to empty their magazine? If Ghorn ran out of ammo in half the time it took Thunderlord, you could potentially pop a heavy ammo synth (or run over some heavy ammo) and keep firing. In order to keep this comparison fair it should be broken down into a damage-per-minute statistic, as time is a factor.

Edited by HIEX91: 8/5/2015 12:19:13 PMWith a Gjallarhorn, you can dish out over 120k burst DPS with 14 rockets within a very short amount of time (7 already in the Launcher, 7 more after consuming a heavy synth). That is why people love nightfall with Solar burn Sustained DPS might be hard, especially when you have to deal with tons of adds. Nightfall with either Arc or Void burn are when MG shines

I guess it's the fire and forget that you have with Gally that makes it better for most situations.Sometimes it's hard to get decent damage with thunder lord as you have to be in line of sight, that being said if weapons of light is available it's definitely the better option
-
2 RepliesWhen there was a solar burn skolas 3 ghorn can kill him in less than 40 sec. When there was an arc burn skolas nobody beat him in 40 sec w/ 3 thunderlord. Even if its mathemathically correct unless proven its just a theory.

To show you guys the DPS Gjallarhorn takes 4 seconds to shoot out its clip and reload without any modifiers. Thunderlord takes 10 seconds with 60 round mag and lighting rounds.

1 ReplyDID YOU NOT SEE THE FIRELORD IN THE VIDEO?! SCREW THUNDERLORD!@@!@!

5 RepliesI love how everyone forgets the fact that you're just stating the Thunderlord has a higher damage capacity but takes this as you stating its better. I love stupid people who skim a topic and assume they know what the author intends to say XD Interesting thought though. Should try this again with Super Good Advice and see if it holds true against Gjallarhorn as well.

I knew thunderlord was strong but had no idea it could lash out more damage then a G-horn. My only concern is that to deal that amount of damage, accuracy is key. Meanwhile, G-horn has tracker. I still love both though.

Gjallarhorn.

How can you compare two weapons that are completely different to each other
-
1. Thunderlord ftw 2. Thank you for making a comparison 3. Gally is too mainstream
-
I just love holding down the trigger on the Thunderlord and slowly coursing with more adrenaline as the rate of fire increases. It sounds and looks so cool.

1 ReplyI have 4 Thunderlords that I've never used because I thought they were bad, so should I use Dragons Breath or Thunderlord?

Nice to see the math. Up voting. The problems though despite this is it's nearly impossible to land all criticals with thunder lord especially how the recoil gets worse when it ramps up. Added that rockets are fired from a safe distance away and still deal all of their damage. Hopefully they add some interesting exotic heavies in TTK and make bosses even in strikes more mechanical and less damage centric. IMO we should get a spartan laser type heavy that has 2 fire modes. standard charge up and shot where it does amazing damage and can pierce targets but takes a 3rd of your ammo. OR a continually fire mode. This does good damage over time does not pierce but benefits from criticals and has better ammo conservation per second. We should get a rocket launcher that does some kind of debuff to the boss. currently bosses are immune to such effects. the 3 effects I have in mind are blind (bosses will fire still but be much less accurate,) toxic (bosses are weakened being more vulnerable to damage for a short time,) and burn (bosses take damage over time either for a long time or for a short time but good ticks of damage) And we should get some interesting heavy machine guns. How about: 1) a hMG that fires mini rocket rounds. would result in a fair amount of damage over time. It's main effect would be that it can stagger bosses a few times in one clip. Also the rockets give off splash damage so close enough enemies would take damage. 2) And HMG that has alternate modes. The primary mode where you have a decent sized clip but the recoil is sparatic and you do good damage. ALT mode you "mount" the turret. You are stuck in place but have a bigger clip, no recoil, and criticals are meaningful. The trade offs would be you can't reload because it uses your clip+ reserve and you are stuck in place while using it. 3) and another HMG. This one does moderate damage. But it debuffs the boss in 2 ways. weakens their damage out put and increases your teams damage out put.

Yeah, agreed, and i see you aren't comparing them. So we can say that in some situations each can excel based on the user, unfortunately the way destiny is, short burst of damage is preferred over long time damage since bosses have annoying skills that make longer fights be more dangerous. Fighting regular enemies I go with tlord, going against bosses gally, they are both superb weapons
-
Did the math. You need to land 86% precision shots to do as much DPS as the Gjallarhorn. If you land all the critical hits you can do 16% more DPS. However if you don't hit any precision shots, the Gjallarhorn will deals over twice as much DPS
-
Gjallarhorn = 61K damage in 20 seconds. Pop synth. And repeat X 3 = dead boss. TLord = 180K? Don't remember don't wanna rewrite the post. In around 3 minutes. Also try hitting that many crits. Maybe it does more damage but still. Gjallarhorn is better for things like crota and bosses like valus and skolas.

1 ReplyOne is an LMG, the other a Rocket Launcher. Cannot compare. /thread

6 RepliesThere is nothing really special about Thunderlord. You are better off having a hammer or BTRD equipped and using your exotic slot on a primary or secondary weapon.

In times vengeance with a critical you deal 1,321 damage per hit
