My first thought when I read the title was "these two concepts are mutually exclusive. RNG destroys all motivation." And you summed it up at the end there. "I'm told to keep playing and they will drop, but I'm on the verge of just giving up." That is precisely the red flag I have been trying to get the devs at Bungie to notice for months now, and I'm not even, how did you put it, a "serious day one player" because I still actually have need of ascendants, mostly energy but I do still have two characters under level 30 who couldn't' even begin to attempt CEHM to "graduate" into the realm of Radiant materials. The problem you have illustrated is that a purely RNG loot system is purely destructive to motivation. Players don't want to keep coming back to a game that is basically just "Roulette: FPS Edition." Gamers love a game that offer rewards that tier with the effort they invest. And more importantly, they love rewards that they KNOW they can get for performing specific tasks. They see something that makes them drool, they rush to the internet looking for some hint of where and how they can get one, and they will spend days, weeks, months, even years throwing themselves into the same task over and over again until they get that prize. But tell them "play any game mode for any amount of time and maybe, maybe, MAYBE you might get....SOMETHING!" and they'll say "I'll get..what, exactly?" "We don't know! You don't know! It could be an exotic! It could be a piece of level 6 armor that you haven't had any use for since the second week of the game's existence." "Well hell, why should I even try then?" "Because you MIGHT get what you want." Gamers don't want "might get." They want "Get got." We want goals we can set and then achieve. Not a severely skewed blindfolded dart toss. RNG kills motivation, because there is absolutely zero reward for skill or even determination. Boot up the game, call up a playlist, leave your controller on the chair and go binge watch a few series on Netflix and you'll have the same odds of getting your preferred loot as the guy who pulls all-nighters twice a week and spends every other waking hour throwing himself against the wall, racking up insane kill counts and flawless speed runs. And like you, quite frankly that sickens me and only serves to drive me away from the game, and I even have 2 of the 3 "Must haves" you listed and earlier today picked one up off my personal list with the Universal Remote. But that's about it. I don't throw myself into the grind. I'll try to get at least one character through the weekly for the strange coin, might do a few Vanguard bounties if I'm bored to boost my XP for motes of light, and then I let it collect dust until Xur sells something I want, or at least something I didn't already buy during the last dozen times he sold it. *coughfreakinsunbreakerscoughcough* But as far as throwing myself into the machine hoping to come out with an exotic or even a halfway-decent legendary that ISN'T an auto rifle or a piece of armor that only boosts auto rifle performance? Nope. It just isn't worth it.

  • I think that the RNG is the only thing keeping large sections of this community playing this game. The OP would not be grinding weeklies, nightfalls, Crota, VoG and ROC, three times over. No, he would have gotten bored of the game long ago and moved on. You have to be philosophical about the RNG, relying on it totally will lead you to frustration. I have the weapons that I use regularly, if I am gifted another, then I am happy. I actually think that you have to use a weapon type for you to have a drop of that type. I have used hand cannons extensively, and as such, I had all of the exotic hand cannons very ealy on, and most of the legendary hand cannons. The same is true of machine guns, I rely on them quite often, and for the past few weeks I have had legendary drops in Nightfall. I recently recieved the Monti Carlo, but I had never used an automatic weapon, but I had started using the Vex Mythoclast, an automatic primary weapon. Since I have been using Found Verdict, I have had several legendary shotgun drops. I have many fusion rifles too, after extensively using Light/Beware. Although these are nothing more than an assumption, I am convinced that there is more to the RNG than just random numbers.

  • All I ever get, no matter what game mode I play, are auto rifles. I do not use auto rifles. 95% of all armor I get from a drop offers perks for auto rifles. I almost never use shotguns outside of PvP and I avoid PvP like the plague. If an armor piece has a second weapon-related perk, it's for shotguns. I use scout rifles and hand cannons. If I don't get an auto rifle, I get a pulse rifle. So no, my personal experience cannot add any weight to the theory that drops are based on play style and loadout choices at all. And yea, people would still be doing these activities 1) because their fun comes from PvE, not competitive dick measuring through PvP, 2) they need crafting materials to fully furnish their new toys, and 3) we still want strange coins for the one and only "guarantee" of getting an exotic: hoping Xur has it for sale on the weekend. Do you know why so many PvE players AREN'T coming back to the game? RNG. We want rewards for efforts, or at least loot that scales based on the difficulty of the activity. Getting a flood of greens while patrolling Earth or even the moon? Only to be expected. These are single-digit level activities. Nightfalls, Raids, Roc playlist strikes with a minimum required level of 26 just to participate let alone excel? Getting level 6-18 gear is a kick in the pants, period. But that's what RNG specializes in. Taking your efforts and investments and turning them into crap, IF there are any returns at all.

  • Yes, this is what's wrong with the current rng reward system. With the exotic bounties you really "earn" the guns (i do hate the mandatory PvP part) instead of the random given rewards. What's the logic about that? The rng reward system is my biggest gripe with this game and I hope you'll remove it out of the next game.

I'd love for them to remove or at least give it a serious whacking with a monkey wrench in THIS game, otherwise they might not see a second game. Far too many people have already left Destiny, and if D2 comes out with the impression of "more of the same" not many of those who are still here will come back for another round of "screw your skill and efforts, have a 'reward' that is more detrimental than beneficial in any way." I can understand, somewhat, the logic behind why RNG can be a good thing. With so many bounties, strikes, etc. requiring you to replay the same missions it would be even more of a drag if every time you got the exact same item. But at the same time, you should NOT have to worry about getting the same item you got in the level 8 Devil's Lair when you go through the level 28 Roc playlist version. And to be perfectly blunt, it should not even be a remote possibility to get ANYTHING of "uncommon" quality in the Roc, or even the Tiger playlist. When the level requirement is higher than you can possibly reach even with the DLC light boost to Rare gear, you should not get ANY uncommons (level 18 max) and it should be RARE to get rares (no pun intended). It should be the exception, not the rule, to get gear that is WORSE than what you need to even participate. Roc/Tiger, Weekly heroic and Nightfall, these should be guarantees of Legendary loot drops and the bests probability of getting an exotic. No greens whatsoever and damned few blues. Go RNG, sure, make it interesting so we're not always getting "Up For Anything" every time we get sent to the Summoning Pits, but make it actually follow some kind of logical tier system relevant to the level and difficulty of the activity itself. We've likely all heard the phrase "there's no reward without effort." With Destiny it's more like "There's no reward FOR effort," or even more common, "There's no reward....period."

  • That's why I like to"cheese" the raids. No effort but I might get rewarded. Don't get me wrong, i like to work for my stuff but in this game there's no difference in effort. Heck, you have a bigger chance to get better stuff if you suck at this game. Look at the many post about an afk-er got an exotic at the crucible.

  • Exactly. And removing the "cheese" is the ONLY attention Bungie has really given to PvE between the end of Queen's Wrath and this long overdue buff to shotguns.
