See that? Good. Now bookmark this page, because you'll have to come back here if you want to see it again. As an added treat for our loyal users still playing Halo PC after 5 years, I got clearance to discontinue the CD check as part of this patch! This doesn't change the licensing (don't pass around your disc), and you still need your unique product key to play online, but I figure your CD is probably pretty scratched after all this time, and it deserves a break. Anyway, on to the patch...
This is build 1.0.8.616, and is the official version of the test release from the other day. To give you confidence that you're playing on a patched server, this build is not backwards-compatible with old servers, nor will the new server work with old clients. For this reason, I'm posting the patches here a day and a half before I'll mark them for auto-updating in-game. This way, server operators have a little time to roll out the new bits before Friday's auto-patch of the client.
If you haven't been following the pre-release threads, this patch contains several fixes for server-crashing security bugs, and that's it. As I have discussed elsewhere, anti-aimbotting is an arms race that we're not going to enter for this old game, and this patch doesn't address that or any other feature-level changes. I should also note that Bungie does not officially support Halo PC (which is owned by Microsoft, not Bungie) but since the build machine is under my desk and not at MS, I fixed these several bugs as a favor to the community. I can't promise any future support, nor can I open-source the code for community development.
There are 4 patch files. If you aren't sure which one you want, you want the first one only.
Halo PC 1.08 Patch
Halo PC 1.08 Dedicated Server
Halo Custom Edition 1.08 Patch
Halo Custom Edition 1.08 Dedicated Server
To use the patch files, you must already have the corresponding game installed. To update your dedicated server install, just drop the appropriate file over the old one. Halo "Custom Edition" is an "unsupported" (but popular) version of the game that allows user-created maps, and is available for download from Gearbox and other mirror sites.
Remember, the game will require this patch to play online starting Friday (and I'll update the MOTD at that time too.)
Enjoy!
Posted by: Btcc22
Posted by: Silentone2 This is unheard of as far as support goes. Most companies/communities would have abandoned this by now. Thanks for being different!
I guess you've had different experiences from me them since HPC has been one of the worst, if not the worst, supported games I've ever played. It was pretty much abandoned at patch 1.02 (which I think was the release of the dedicated server).
Actually they changed quite a lot and improved much with 1.03 especially. Gearbox tried pretty hard the first year, but eventually they were focused on Brothers in Arms. The aimbotting came later on and everyone (M$, Bungie, Gearbox) looked the other way. M$ never put the resources into fixing the problem, so I guess you can blame them since they own the game. You can definitely blame them for H2v support or lack thereof. Not that support could polish that turd. Anyway, thanks for the patch Bungie after so long.

hey if we lost the product key will it let us install it if we kinda uninstalled it the day of this update because it didnt work?(i was mad to figure this out. why wasnt it sent out thru a xbox live msg?
-
Thanks alot sawnose for your work... We all thought we'd been forgotten out there after all these years hehe. For all those playing PC and that haven't even tryed Custom Edition, It's worth taking a look because it lets you create your own maps(in a Much better fashion H2V) so you can fly pelicans around and such... Also Sawnose, How come you're the one with the build machine and not M$ or Gearbox hehe? Thanks alot once more.
I like this game is getting support YEARS after release while Halo 2 for Vista is essentially abandoned by Microsoft. I hope that when Halo 3 releases for PC, you know it will, that there is actual support, even if Microsoft has to give support duties to Bungie.
So true! I definitely agree with your opinion... But when Halo 3 is going to be released in future, it should be ported much better than Halo 2 was: better performance and better mouse control/sensitivity, maybe better textures too ;-) - H2 could have been such a great port, but in the end it wasn't very successful, unfortunately... Thank you again, Sawnose. You can now add "savior of the hpc community" to your resume. Also, not to beat a dead horse but
Posted by: sawnose As I have discussed elsewhere, anti-aimbotting is an arms race that we're not going to enter for this old game... -Roger
Would you do it for money? We could all chip in and send you on a cruise or something. Maybe you wouldn't even have to change anything fundamental--just release a bunch of superficial patches until the bot programmers gave up.
-
There's a tear in my eye.....thank you.
-
Yes! Thank you sawnose.
-
I have to get his Version of CE i always wanted to play it online but i never had a computer that could run it.
-

Thanks... Now I'll be stuck playing Halo PC for the next few weeks, nw I won't get any homework done XD. Also, it is very nice to see that Bungie is still supporting the Halo PC community! EDIT: :( :( :( I recently stopped going on these forums for about a week as I had absolutely craploads of homework.. And now, all of a sudden , my Heroic Member status has been revoked... :( [Edited on 08.07.2008 5:35 AM PDT]

Removing the disc check is great, its a unneeded feature that all PC games can do without. As long as you have the correct Key, the disc should be unneeded. Still supporting a game 5 years old shows your dedication, keep it up!
