Hi there!
There is a lot of confusion regarding xur and his exotic upgrades lately, so I'm here with a simple FAQ to help prevent players from making the wrong move. First, lets get to know our tentacle faced friend, or foe depending on what you believe.
Q: Who is Xur?
A: Xur is an agent of the nine, who visits the tower to trade exotic items and other curios to guardians in exchange for strange coins. Xur also offers upgrades for various exotic items, which I will explain more in depth later on.
Xur's purchasable items are located on the top most row under "Exotic Gear." It will always feature a piece of armor for each class type, a weapon, exotic shards and an Exotic engram.
The upgrades Xur has available will be located in the second and third rows under "Upgrade Equipped Exotics." The second row for armor and the third row for weapons.
The fourth and last row includes a random assortment of weapon telemetries, sparrow upgrades and heavy ammo synthesis.
An example of Xur's inventory can be seen here. Keep in mind that the image is of an old inventory.
One last thing, Xur arrives in the tower every Friday morning at 9 am UTC and leaves Sunday mornings at 9 am UTC.
Q: Where can I find strange coins?
The weekly heroic strikes are the number one source to earn strange coins. Rewards do not stack and higher tiers subtract previously gained lower-tier rewards. For example, if you complete the strike on the lowest difficulty and receive 3 Strange Coins and 3 Vanguard Marks then complete level 28 strike, you will only earn 3 more coins and 3 more marks from that particular strike. Each character can only earn a total of 9 strange coins from the heroic strikes each week, with three characters that brings the total up to 27 guaranteed coins each week.
The possible amount of coins for each difficulty is as followed:
Level 24: 3 Strange Coins
Level 28: 6 Strange Coins
Level 30: 9 Strange Coins
Q: What are Xûr's exotic upgrades?
A: Xûr offers upgrades for exotic weapons and armor for gear acquired prior to the launch of The Dark Below DLC. These exotic items max out at 300 attack and 30 light. The point of the upgrade is to raise the max attack for weapons to 331 and the max light for armor to 36, to be up to speed with exotic items acquired after The Dark Below released. Upgrading an exotic through Xur clears the progress on the upgrade tree and bumps the max stat up.
Q: Why does Xûr offer exotic upgrades?
A: These upgrades were offered alongside the launch of The Dark Below. All exotic weapons prior to the DLC maxes out at 300 attack, (Besides the Vex Mythoclast) and armor maxed out at 30 light. After the DLC, weapons could reach a max of 331 attack and the new raid and exotic armors could max out at 36 light. The upgrades are there so players treasured exotic items could be brought up to par with newer gear and wouldn't become obsolete.
Q: How do I upgrade an item through Xûr?
A: To be able to upgrade an exotic through Xur, you need an Exotic shard, the weapon you wish to upgrade and around 7000-7999 glimmer. Exotic shards can be purchased through Xur for 7 strange coins or are received from dismantling exotic weapons and armor. The weapon you wnt to upgrade MUST be equipped on your character for you to be given the option to upgrade it.
Q: I upgraded my gear but nothing changed and my progress got reset, why?
A: Any exotic weapon with 331 max attack and any exotic armor with 36 max light should NOT be upgraded through Xûr. Your progress will be reset and you'll lose valuable resources. All gear includes their maximum attack/light in their stats so make sure you know your gear, and remember, if you do make any mistakes, all sales are final!
Please exercise caution when upgrading through your friendly neighborhood agent of the nine.

Bump. Awesome stuff

6 RepliesThis makes no sense. Xur clearly offers upgrades of the gear in your possession and all that's required is Glimmer and a shard. Why are these upgrades for armour offered when they clearly do not function as intended along side weapon upgrades that work exactly as advertised?
