The only items "earned" in Destiny are items with specific criteria for attaining them. Such as exotic bounties, Iron Banner gear, Murmur etc ... Everything else is dropped by a programming algorithm, otherwise known as "luck".
Case in point. I have played almost 400 hours and have beaten both Raids repeatedly as well as lots of Nightfalls and I've never gotten a Gjallerhorn. I barely play PvP and scored a Suros off a random match reward. No rhyme or reason. Just "luck".
If you think you "earned" a random drop, get off your high horse and join reality with the rest of us.

There's a serious rift in the community between relatively normal gamers with basically normal lives and generally normal grips on reality and the players who believe that their digital, make believe set of 1s and 0s that generates numerical modifiers for a casino algorithm equates in any way to something "earned". Apparently, this reaction in this group of gamers is strong enough and common enough that they've come here and banded together to form a sort of dysfunctional kids club where they take it in turn to shout down normal people and people with a healthy relationship to gaming. And the kicker is that they do their shouting from a soapbox made solely of the same delusion that binds them together. I've never seen so many people full of so much self righteous indignation who were so unaware of their toxic level of mental illness outside of rehab centers, jails or inpatient therapy groups. It's legitimately scary to me. Some of the thousand word manifestos here about the sanctity of "earned ghorns" contain the same levels of delusion and narcissism that I've read in letters written by inmates who aren't ashamed of their horrific crimes and freely admit their guilt while "educating" the reader about how their actions aren't really wrong. I've decided to come out of retirement and quantify what I'm seeing here. On my next off day I'm going to draft a grant proposal full of examples from this forum to see if I can start a legit research project based on this phenomenon.

Edited by Zombifikation: 3/2/2015 11:06:53 AMYep...I wonder what they think is an appropriate amount of time to get a specific exotic? I see posts on here every once in a while about people who have over 1k hours in the game and still don't have X, and I know a guy with ~800 hours played who has multiples of every exotic gun in the game...so how does one determine when something is "earned"? It takes a special kind of stupid to follow this "earner" logic. Imo all of the rng exotics should have a criteria for earning them. Make them all bounty based, or limit their drop locations so people can focus their efforts. Bungee wants us to choose the exotics that best compliment our playstyle but gives us no reasonable chance to get the ones we want besides Xur who doesn't even sell all of them...not a great setup.
-
I just saw a post saying that exotics should be "earned" in Raids. Never go full retard
-
Really, the only for sure thing that can be earned by trying are strange coins. Which would lead to anything Xur has being earned. Anything bought with Glimmer is earned.
-
Agree 100%
-
Exotic weapons from exotic bounties are the only thing you earn aside from rep and marks.
-
I randomly logged in today to get that "last match" of PvP before my raid group started in a MMO, I play and guess what dropped? I did pretty shitty too, and I get a blue engram and the Gjallerhorn.....finally!! RNG FTW!!
-
I earned the money to buy the game. I work a job. Hopefully you do too, or spend enough time on school or a passion. All pixels given to us for our use are earned, no matter the source. The earning happened before we bought the game. Everything else is low level conjecture that feeds a negative and delusional game conversation. Reality points +1 if you agree.
-
This will always be an argument unless set loot tables are implemented. Until then who gives a rats ass what some 12 year old says.
-
Somebody please look up the definition of "earn"......
-
I bought Destiny from a vendor nearby, guess I did not earn it.
-
Obviously I earned my gjallarhorn I didn't just sit in the back from Crota and let my team do all the work. I was swordbearer on hard and killed crota, and for that I earned my gjallarhorn
-
this is true, but doesn't give reason for xur to sell it
-
EXACTLY thank you

Edited by Wer: 3/1/2015 3:51:39 AMWe all have the same chance of getting exotics after any given activity or after opening any legendary engram. The more time you play the more chances you have to get an exotic so I view it as you earn exotics through play.
-
Id say if you have done over 50 raids or have 500 plus hours played....you have "earned" any gjallarhorn or exotic that you didnt have. If you get a high end exotic with lets say 100 hours or your first 10 raids.....you got "lucky" on your drop.
-
I "earned" my Gjallarhorn from a legendary engram I "earned" my Vex the first time I finished the hard raid
I actually got these ask if you want to see.
-
It's really still a thing this is what turned me off to the game a while back
-
Edited by BattleCry1986: 3/1/2015 3:38:21 AMThorn is earned
-
I just mute people who make a big deal about "earners" instead of "xurners" Got a pretty big list going now but it makes the forums a nicer place ☺
-
I said it before.. I will say it again! RNG exotics are like herpes If you do it .. Theres a chance you can get em Would you say you earned herpes
-
Damn straight
-
I could care less. It's a damn game that randomly gives you an item. I bet half the cry babies here didn't even "earn" their destiny disc and it was probably a gift or bought by their parents. Am I gonna be a total moron and make a thread saying if you didn't earn your copy of destiny I'm gonna quit or not play with you. No. I hope xur sells every uncommon exotic so these kids will just follow through with their threads and quit or not play with anyone at all.

In a game with an RNG system, either everything you get is earned, or nothing you get is earned.
-
You don't earn shit in this game its RNG I don't know why some people can't get that through their dumbass heads
-
Yea that doesn't make much sense to me. Getting icebreaker first VoG raid means I earned it, but buying it after playing multiple weekly heroics and earning coins isn't earning it? Suuuure....
