Why does Xur have weapons and gear that can only be purchased if you already have an the gear/weapon?
Example: I got the universal remote from him today and a chest gear off him last week now both them are available on the bottom half what's the purpose of buying it again if I'm already useing it and have it maxed out ?

1 ReplyThe bottom half are upgrade for pre-dlc exotics that only max at 300 atk/30 light. It allows these old exotics to get to the current max of 331 atk/ 36 light at the cost of material and resetting all progress. If you're exotic already has, 331 atk do NOT upgrade it. Armor upgrades have 36 light but may have a better int/dis/str stat roll than the one you have, you can get the upgrade if you don't mind having to reupgrade your gear.

1 ReplyThis section of Xur's inventory is for upgrading exotics with pre-DLC stats(300 damage 30light) to post-DLC status(331 damage 36 light). It also resets a weapons upgrade progress. If your weapon already had post-DLC stats you do not need to upgrade it. See the link below for more details. Exotic Upgrade FAQ

1 ReplyIt's worth noting that the stat rolls are often better on the upgrades than what you'll have found in the wild or bought from Xur, so if you're looking to maximize your character and you have a lot of materials it's sometimes smart to reset a 36 light piece and get the better stat roll. For example, if I had a 90 int mask of the third man I might reset it for the one he's upgrading now that's at like 120 (I think? Didn't actually check, but you get the idea).
