Looking for expert Swordbearer tips/tricks

Any expert Swordbearers out there? I've beaten Crota as the Swordbearer before, but feel I can be more efficient at it. - Do you press forward while smashing? - Do you need to time your smashes or just press RT as fast as possible? - Is using a combo more effective than just using smash (RT)? Thanks for all your help! EDIT #1: some excellent advice here. Thanks! EDIT #2: thanks to the below advice, I've mastered acting as Swordbearer on Normal and have started getting good on Hard. Thanks all!

Since every one here is posting from a hunter's POV, I am going to post a more general guide for all classes and maybe break the mindset that you have to be a hunter to kill crota. Also I have around 17 HM kills on crota as swordbearer (haven't played in a few weeks so my kills are low). 1. As swordbearer you most important role is surviving. Use whatever armour you have with the orb health regen perk and since you aren't needed for DPS'ing, (except for swordbearer and orgres) guns such as Suros and Red Death are great to have. On a side note titans can instantly regen health by using ward of dawn, and warlocks have the ability to self res and apotheosis veil, while hunters have bladedancer for regen. It is also incredibly important you spec your character into speed and durability, since battle recovery plays no part in this encounter it is pointless to use, also speed is your best friend. 2. For the beginning of the fight create as many orbs as possible so everyone has the super up and more orbs to regen health further into the encounter (heavy ammo glitch is optional here). 3. If your running middle strategy have all players run out at the same time and start killing the swordbearer. Also if he moves out of line of sight you may have to jump down to lure him over to kill him, however watch where you stand as if you stand too far back the gatekeeper will come and attack you. 4. Once the sword has dropped it is important to pick it up while minimizing any damage taken to you. I recommend staying in the air and also picking up the sword in the air so you aren't an easy target on the ground for thrall to hit. Once you have the sword, jump and sword slash across to your rock of choice (left or right). 5. The next section is all personal preference. As I run to the rock I start a countdown for my fireteam for when to fire. 3...2...1... Rockets Rockets Rockets. As I hit the rock I say Fire, and immediately jump towards crota and if your timing is right you can now attack. It is best to position yourself on the side of crota to which rock you are going to jump back to. 6. Many people have different attack methods. I personally use two combos and sometimes push for a two sword kill but the most safe option is to do three heavy slams each down and maybe get one with 4 in there just so your "ahead" in damage. There are other methods out there but this is probably the safest. 7. Once you are finishing whatever last attack animation you are doing you want to start moving you character's view back towards the rock you are jumping to. NEVER run back to the rock. Always do a very short jump and start sword slashing back towards the rock. (This isn't as hard as it sounds, but it may take a little practice). 8. Once back in position, make sure you are on the part of the rock that cannot see crota. As he can sometimes continue to stay agro on you and gun you down if you look at him. Begin another countdown and jump when you see the rockets a couple of meters off hitting crota. 9. Attack him again with your preferred technique and then sword slash back toward the rock. It is important you go back to the rock otherwise he may attack you if you go straight back across the bridge to the crystal room. 10. Run back inside, regen your health and do the exact same thing again. 11. Everyone run into orge room, kill it, kill the next ogre. Run back inside. 12. Attack crota again, after the first kneel he will enrage (if using the 3 heavy slams per down method). Run back to the rock, everyone ignore the oversoul and attack crota again, and enjoy the satisfaction of killing this boss. There are a number of other things I could mention in this post, but for the sake of reading I left them out. Hopefully this helps someone.
