The Hunt Part III: The Mission

Part I: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/101800112/0/0 Part II: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/102071963/0/0 . As I prepared to board my ship Cayde handed me three objects, a sniper rifle, a cloaking device and cape. ‘These three objects will help you in your mission. The sniper is the most powerful rifle we have recovered from the golden age, it can penetrate the armor of just about anything but it can only fire one bullet at a time you will have to reload to fire again. The cloaking device will allow you to extend your invisibility well beyond the normal time and the cape will hide your heat signature and match the environment that surrounds you, old style camouflage. These items are extremely rare so I will need you to bring these back’ Cayde said. ‘Thanks Cayde, I have one question. Has anyone ever refused a hunt before?’ I said. ‘No, but we always ask anyway. Good hunting Kiad, make sure you bring that stuff back in one piece.’ I boarded my ship and started the launch sequence. ‘Ghost, how do you feel about this?’ I asked. ‘I don’t like it’ he replied. ‘Aside from the obvious risks, this is not what the Guardians are meant to be, Humanity can only survive if we work together not on our own’. I said nothing. My ship was next in line to launch, the timer counted down to zero, the light went green and I gunned it, flying out toward the Traveller, I flew around the white orb, ascending toward space. I looked toward the Traveller as I did so, wondering if I would ever see it and the city ever again. My ship broke atmosphere and I was now in the void of space, I handed controls over to Ghost who began doing the calculations for the jump to mars. The Ghost’s uncaring voice spoke ‘We are ready to jump.’ ‘Punch it’ I said. The ship accelerated punching through space in a direct line for Mars. Once we began decelerating in orbit over mars I said to Ghost ‘Any new intelligence from Blind Watch?’ ‘None’ Ghost said ‘The Cabal is still in a war of attrition with the Vex, but the Vex appear to be backing down from the fight since the heart was pierced, I am not sure if they are withdrawing or changing strategy.’ ‘OK put me down near Rubicon, I will climb in over the walls and from there we will have to figure it out, hold onto Cayde’s unique rifle until I ask for it’. ‘Sure thing.’ Ghost said. The ship entered Mars’ still thin atmosphere heading for Meridian Bay, once there it began to settle above the ground I hopped out the door, rather than teleport to the ground. I turned to face the cliffs that make up Rubicon’s natural defences. After a long time climbing and walking, the tumbler would have been detected by the Cabal; I had arrived at an unguarded door in the wall. ‘Ghost what is this door and why is it unguarded?’ I said, ‘It appears to be a maintenance door and air lock of some kind, the base might be at a higher pressure than Mars’ normal pressure, the Cabal do where sophisticated armour suit after all, perhaps they can’t survive in this pressure. As for the door being unguarded it is possible that the guards have been called away to fight in a… ALERT, there is a Cabal patrol heading our way.’ I jumped down from my vantage point into a pile of rocks; I threw myself flat on my back and threw my cloak over my body, transforming myself into just another red rock. I looked down my scope at the door; twelve Cabal legionnaires were entering the airlock. ‘So it is an entry to a barracks’ Ghost said to himself. ‘We may have to find another way in’ he said to me. ‘No, this is the only unguarded door we have found. Come on we will check out the control panel.’ I activated the cloaking device; I had twenty seconds of invisibility. I sprinted toward the door and Ghost gave a quick scan of the panel. I ran back to the rocks. ‘OK what have we got?’ I asked. Ghost said ‘The panel is stock standard Cabal, it shouldn’t be too difficult to crack, but there are undoubtedly fail safes … I should be able to ge’ ‘No, we can’t risk alerting the Cabal to our presence, will have to sneak in with the next patrol. Don’t worry I have a plan, let’s get above the door.’ We waited for three hours, the cape blending myself in with the gunmetal grey of the wall. The next patrol had arrived, they were lining up in front of the door, the door opened and they began marching into the airlock. ‘Ghost now’ I whispered. The cloaking field activated and the cape Cayde had given me dematerialised to be replaced with a smaller cape and hood. The last Legionary walked into the airlock and I, completely invisible, slipped in behind him the door closed behind me, luckily I had taken the longer cape off otherwise I would have been trapped by the door. I had nineteen seconds left. The legionnaires stood waiting patiently for the pressure in the room to build, as it did so my suit started to compensate so that I was comfortable with the higher pressure. Fifteen seconds left. An alarm sounded, the legionnaires took their helmets off and appeared to be unconcerned. Ten seconds left. One of the legionnaires turned to face where I stood, he did not focus on me. Five seconds left. He looked … tired. The door opened and the legionnaires all marched out of the airlock and I followed behind and found myself a corner. My invisibility ran out. I sighed a deep sigh of relief. ‘OK I am in Rubicon, what next’ Part 4 is up : https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/102711152
