Destiny vs Mass Effect
I hereby propose a formal challenge to Bungie to top the Mass Effect story. Why do I propose this? To help Bungie improve the game most of us love.
My thoughts:
1. Mass Effect has an unrivaled Sci Fi story, portrayed with amazing composition and good voice acting
2. Mass Effect pioneered its genre into the next level with excellent mechanics and story variance
3. Destiny has similar characteristics, and the gaps in the game story could be remedied with a comparison between the titles
Your thoughts Guardians?
Edit: Thank you for the comments, and I salute my fellow ME fans. If you feel Destiny cannot compete [u]story wise[/u], please state why. The goal of this post is to help Bungie improve their story telling with Destiny and enhance the experience. Thanks!
Edit2: seems so far that most generally agree that the gaps could be addressed without putting too much content there. I propose a happy medium to appease both casual gamers and more serious gamers.

I've played Destiny for almost that long and I don't see slowing down anytime soon. Also, please compare Mass Effect 1 to Destiny, not the entire ME franchise. This is the first game, it should be compared the first ME or to Halo: CE, not every Halo ever made! (get my point?) EDIT >>> For those answering, it is an honest question, I never played ME.

Mass Effect was an engrossing story that captivated me for many many months, I looked forward to both new games with a lot of excitement. I replayed the story countless times just to make a few different decisions that might make a difference down the road. Number 3 was different but still good. I think Destiny could definitely learn from the story and give us something to fight for, something that we can strive for rather than just exotic weapons or armor. Give me something other than PVE. Give me something deeper Bungie.

62 RepliesI've played Destiny every day since the Day One. Including the Beta. Mass effect can't manage to hold my attention for more that about an hour.... Destiny's game play is immersive. Mass Effect I feel like I'm riding on rails thorugh a shooting gallery.

Destiny ain't got shit on mass effect. In mass effect I actually cared about the characters. I fealt terrible when characters died. If a character died in destiny I wouldn't give a -blam!-. If the speaker got shot in the face I would laugh.

Even the ending of mass effect 3 was better written than the complete story line of Destiny.

1 ReplyHands down Mass Effect. Best story telling in a game franchise. Period. Character depth and development over a period of installments / years. PERSONAL CHOICES MATTER (and affect what actually happens in game, and allows almost infinite replayability without feeling like a grind). I actually had the feels through the story of ME3. Mordin sacrificing himself, saying goodbye to your significant other, the memorial at the end, ugh (tear my heart out). Even in retrospect, I felt bad for saren and even elusive man to a degree, because of the story and character development. Destiny just comes off as a grinding loot grab. Storyline to too short / underdeveloped (non existent for some). Character creation has no effect in game. No inter character interactions that have meaning or real purpose. No personal choice at all regarding story or plot line. I don't mind the fps grind as that's what I choose to play at the moment but... At the same token, there's really nothing keeping me here to do so. Mass Effect was so good that it made me want to play it. I still go back time and time again for a play through. I hear rumors that they are possibly going to re-release a remastered trilogy on the ps4 xbone. Shut up and take my money!!!

2 RepliesThey could take a lesson from bioware in general when it comes to story telling and making the player feel alive in the world they're playing. Mass effect was great. Dragon age although the story isn't as compelling it's still very deep and rich but the best ever in my opinion was Star Wars Knights of the old republic.

Mass Effect is a single player story driven game. Destiny is an Open world Co-op game. Just because they are both Sci-fi doesn't mean they can be compared. It is like comparing Vodka and Wine just because both are Alcohol.

You're challenging them to go from one of the worst stories to top one of the best? I'm all for a challenge and whatnot, but baby steps. Really though, as it stands Destiny is hopeless for story. It would need a massive overhaul; the storyline infrastructure itself would need to change because the whole mission mode of story telling typically doesn't work out well. It would need a proper story board, better writers, voice actors, the whole lot of it. Just adding more dialogue or whatever wouldn't cut it. Ultimately, it'd need to be a whole new game set in the Destiny universe, or a massive remaster of the current game for resale. The potential for story is there, and it would be an amazing one if they did it right, but there's no foundation. Nothing to put that story on. Just enjoy Destiny for what it is, cautiously hope for future installments, but don't compare it to games like ME. The only real similarity they share is that they're Sci Fi.
