It is up to you but I would save one rare engram of each armor type and weapon type and give them to your new character to turn in. The lowest lvl blue you will get it lvl10 so at lvl 10 or 11 you will have all blue gear and weapons for them. Like someone else mentioned, get an exotic armor piece for that character so at lvl 20 they have one good piece of gear. Exotic bounties are nice too, that way you wont have to switch weapons as often.
