• Good read. I love the buggers in Halo 2, and their... buggery? The Brutes dodge animation was also more logical than a dodge roll imo, but the lack of shields and that huge animation time gap made them a little too easy to headshot on Halo 3 when throwing grenades.

 • The brute with the fan shield looks pretty awesome, such a shame it got cut. I can just imagine a brute deploying its fan shield when under heavy fire and then charging me with the shield still up and when he closes in on me, swings the hammer round with one hand for a hefty blow. I'd love to see more unused animations in future =)

 • Motion Capture.... Give me good graphics, Matchmaking for everything, Server browsers and more 'Epic'ness and Reach will be Game of the Forever.

 • Great update!
Posted by: Serious Suicide Pretty cool. The fan shield would be interesting but it doesn't really fir the brute character.
I could easily see the fan shield aesthetic working. Especially if it looked sharp and or crude to fit with their cruel nature.
Posted by: urk Words can only ask so much of our imagination. If well-wrought, they can only hope to conspire and create the hint of kinetic energy to fuel the mind's engines, but they cannot breathe life into characters -- at least not in a video game.
I couldn't disagree with that statement more. Through the words of various characters in many games has their soul been laid bare. I speak of dialogue mainly but other uses exist.

 •
Posted by: robby118 Neat! I love animations, they never fail to pique my interest. I especially liked the Drone one. The Brute shield would have made a very cool addition. :)
Ditto, i like to try and spy all the frames, where the creatures are in each frame. Of course that's very hard as it's moving at 30fps but i still enjoy doing that wherever animation is.
Posted by: Rangar I am currently 17 and have been taking all computer classes I can get. I have always had a fascination with all aspect required to make a successful game. I was wondering though how important is drawing talent in computer animation. I mean I've made animations with programs like Alice, Flash and some other half ass game making programs and have made some pretty satisfying stuff. But when it comes to a pen and paper well I can make a stick figure and maybe a rock but that's it. If drawing is an important skill to have for animation how can I improve myself in that aspect for I can one day work my magic at in the bowels of Bungie....
It depends upon your technique of getting it from concept to animation. I would probably do better with the whole mirror/video camera and the words, to drawing, to animation. So think about how you get your ideas and turn them into animations. •
Posted by: furiocity Those animation images were pretty cool, could the brute ones possibly show a brute armor design for Reach?
That's what I was thinking. And I haven't seen Drones carry off any Marines since Halo 3's Crow's Nest level. Would be interesting if that makes it into Reach.

 • You guys really should have kept some of the animations you cooked up, I especially loved watching E' Tu Brute Vidoc and seeing the dismemberment animations from the Brute ripping the arms off a marine and the Elite with the dual swords lopping off the feet of another Brute. I laughed so hard when I watched that drone animation because it reminded me of something from the Wizard of Oz and I had to agree that scrapping the brute shield was a good idea not just because of their shield system but the way it looked, not very Brute-like. I would have thought up of something more like the shield of an Uruk-Hai from Lord of the Rings. Well that's all I really had to say here people.

 •
Posted by: Papa Bear 006 This was really awesome you guys, thanks Bill O'Brien!! It inspires a padawan animator such as myself. So are those models used in the actual game, or is there further edges and definition added later? I mean, from what was there, you could probably take it into mudbox or zbrush and give it some more detail, but perhaps you guys subdivide it some more before throwing it into game?
Those were just simple 2D and 3D animations. This interview has gotten me interested in 2D and 3D animation. We did a small assignment drawing 2D models in my Graphic design class. I didn't really find it that interesting, but seeing how they unfold in the end makes the work seem fun. Thank You.

 • My dream job is to be an animator so this interveiw was very interesting for me. I really liked the idea of that fan shield on the chieftan. It reminded me of a similar idea I had when I was chattin' with some friends about game plots and idea's. I really look forward to seeing more of your work in Halo Reach. - Makaidos

 • Hope to see more articles like this. I find it extremely interesting to see parts of the game making process. I'm hoping my input on that survey a month or 2 ago was a factor for an article like this. I'm also hoping the next one is real technical.
