How Not To Get Cheated/Lagged Out. (Step by Step Guide.)

First off I have put a lot of effort into this post, both with instructions, testing, and finally writing. Please keep this post alive so as many people can see it to save themselves from being lagged out or (Ping Flooded out). Secondly, this hasn't been tested on a MAC, and this usually only works if you use a router while playing online. Most modems already block ICMP (Ping) or cannot be modified to block them.(Please try even if you use a modem for X-box 360 it still might work!) Thirdly, It's time to stop cheaters! The Guide Starts Here: (forgive me if I am being to technical, Message me if you are stuck I WILL answer all messages received!) Open your "Network Connections" then click on your connected line/ then go to support after it opens and you should see a bunch of numbers including your IP, which you do not need. All you need is the "default Gateway" number. Step One Open your browser (FireFox or Internet Explorer, etc.) and enter the "Default Gateway" number into the address bar, it should take you to a login screen (if your router has a password & username, which it should, be safe!) After logging in, you are at your Routers Settings! From there access Security/Access Restrictions/ or whatever it may be called. (Linksys calls it Access Restrictions) Then Find where you can block PING and or ICMP, block/disable both and save settings! YOU ARE NOW SAFE! Until cheaters find another way. But I highly dout they will. Step Two PS I have Pictures for both steps, (Retrieving "default Gateway" number and then accessing Routers setting) (Those are linked) Bungie, this last part is for you, I'm in Network Security (2nd Year College) and you might want to Sticky this post. Try it; it works. LONG LIVE LEGIT GAMING, AND LONG LIVE HALO 3!!!!! [EDIT]: Adding some Info, If you can Block all PING do it. ICMP should stop lagging out, but if you can block all 3 types of PING do it, UDP TCP are the other forms of PING. Some routers have a mode called "stealth mode" if you have this TURN IT ON!!! :) [EDIT] I've added how to retrieve your IP on Vista, a great message was sent to me from an awesome player. " I am running Vista and had to use my networking know how in modifying your steps. To get to where you said in Vista, a person has to perform the following steps: Start, Control Panel, Network and Sharing, then Network Connections. The problem with Vista is that once you get there, there is no support screen to show the IP, Default Gateway, etc as there is in XP. So what I had to do is actually go into my router and find the information. I have a Linksys Router, so I know that the IP address to take me to the admin password prompt is 192.168.1.1, which should be standard for all Linksys routers. Once I was in the router access page I clicked the "status" tab on the upper right corner and that showed me the default gateway...which is bascially a moot point if we're already in the router access page. What I would suggest is figure out what the other router company standard IP address is to access the user name and password for their model to perform the amazing information you already gave. I would hate to see someone that wants to play legit games getting screwed because they are running Vista and can't figure out how to protect themselves. " [Edited on 06.05.2008 4:21 PM PDT]

 • I have the same link sys router as you, and was wondering how you actually "block" the ping. There is simply no box that you check. Do i just make sure it is set to 0~0?

 • Just so everyone knows this method of stopping cheating doesnt work!!! I did this step by step guide a few days ago and still got lagged out and kicked off my internet for 6 hours yesterday. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsHalo3.aspx?gameid=569646747&player=MeganFox%20duh The cheaters were Guess Who it is and Insane Ya Digg. [Edited on 06.23.2008 11:03 AM PDT]

 • hey can you tell me if disabling PIN is enough to stop host booters? In the drop down menu it doesnt have ICMP so im wondering if just disabling PING is enough

 • I have a D-link 4300 Gaming lounge with GameFuel™. I know for sure that I have the GameFuel™ on. Does that automatically block ping? That was my question but after looking for awhile I found the all 3 forms of ping should be automatically blocked if GameFuel is on. However, feel free to inform people of any new(er) discoveries in blocking cheaters.

 • Ok, so your now blackholing pings. If your router now spends all is time dropping 100 packets second from all over the internet which is saturating your line anyway, how does this help you DOS wise? Truth is, anyone on the internet who controls more bandwidth than you (when were taking botnets here, the answer is yes) can turn your connection off, period. the internet was designed and built at a time when it was mostly only academic institution who had access, and it was assumed you wouldent pull -blam!- like that. Listen up good kids, here be the Tru7th Heres your protection. If you find yourself getting DOSsed off the internet, change your public IP as quick as possible. The bot nets will lose track of you, the attacked IP ill go back into the DHCP pool and thus the DOS will be blackholed at your isps routers, leaving you alone, now it thier problem. How you change your IP i will leave as an excersise for th reader, cos thres so many different configs out there and im not goig thru it all. google is your friend. hint: for cable broadband, youll be wanting to spoof the MAC of your router/gteway/whatever to force the modem to pull a new IP from your isp.

 •
Posted by: One One Seven I'd advise the original poster to actually listen to those more knowledgeable of networking, instead of posting misinformation, however helpful the intentions might be. Whomever claimed that this causes DoS attackers to DoS themselves is completely and utterly wrong! Firstly anyone with any sense will be using a Distributed DoS attack, meaning that it will come from more than one PC; taking someone else's connection down using one connection is almost impossible, unless you happen to be on say DSL, whilst the person you are attacking is on dialup. Secondly, the data does not get "returned to sender". Ping requests will be answered if you enable them (and all this does is disable them). Any data would get sent in to a networking 'black hole'. Thirdly if anyone did actually use their own computer to perform an attack, the chances are that they would spoof the IP address, and so any computer trying to respond would send responses to the completely wrong address. I applaud the original poster's intent (and those that have posted in this thread), but continuing to post misinformation based on ignorance is not useful, and ignoring those more knowledgeable is only going to continue to make you ignorant! The ONLY way this post would actually help is if your router is receiving and trying to respond to so many requests that it crashes; all this would do it stop it from responding to requests, halving the amount of connections it has to deal with. It doesn't help at all if your network connection is saturated, and it doesn't help if there are so many incoming connections anyway that your router crashes.
I'm the org. poster, I never claimed it would do anything to the DoS attacker, But I KNOW it will stop DoS attacks from cheaters because they are mostly too stupid to use multiple DoS attacks, most of them are very young. It's been working for me. Flame away.

 •
Posted by: wizzie 192.168.1.254/cgi/b/secp.../?be=0&l0=2&l1=6 That should take you straight to the firewall options. I used to have a 780 myself ;) The speedtouch by default blocks ICMP packets from the WAN. So your level of security is fine... But just incase you wanted to check ;) You can check the details for the firewall: Home > Toolbox > Firewall (on ST585v6: 192.168.1.254/cgi/b/secp.../?be=0&l0=2&l1=6 ) (click "details") (for me, shows: "Security Level: Standard"). Good luck.
So this means I already have it set up haha. EDIT: I tried the link and it didn't work. And if I put in my default IP adress and go on toolbox there's no Firewall. But anyways, I already have a good protection againt flooders? I think I've never been lagged out :)/ [Edited on 06.06.2008 4:53 AM PDT]

 • What the mod is talking about is a Ping flood. Commonly used in a DDoS (Distributed Deinal of Service) attack where someone floods your routers Network card with large packets of data. If you turn off ICMP, your router will still recieve the requests, they just wont respond and the sender will get Time Outs. So, your router is stull using some processing/ bandwidth, so even thought the Mod's sytem will work decently, your router will still be hit. It just wont respond, thus cutting the bandwidth in half.

Turned out they had just played 11 Team Objective games won them all and each time someone was booted from the game. Looked back in to there games and a lot people are getting booted from there games. would like to put a stop to these people but not sure how to go about it?.
